Compaq Presario Desktop PCs - Testing the Hard Drive with IDE DPS Self Test (PCs Manufactured Prior to 2003)
This document provides information about the Integrated Drives Electronics Data Protection Systems (IDE DPS) Self Test. The test is available by opening the BIOS Setup utility on many Presario desktops models manufactured before 2003. Once the test is completed, a hard drive passes or fails the test. Use this test to help determermine if the hard drive needs to be replaced.

Using the IDE DPS Self Test
Depending on the size of the hard drive, the IDE DPS Self Test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. The hard drive either passes or fails the test. The test does not provide specific information about the cause of the failure. However, failure of the test is generally due to a defective or damaged hard drive.
