HP DeskJet 1000 Series Printers - Setting Up the Printer in Windows

Prepare the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer

Remove the four pieces of tape securing the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer (one is at the back). Open the top cover and remove the fifth piece of tape and the white packing material from the inside of the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.

To install the output tray, follow the instructions below.

  1. Align the guides on the output tray with the grooves on the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.

  2. First, push the left side of the output tray in until it locks, then push in the right side.

  3. Lower the output tray to its horizontal position.

Connect the printer cable

To connect the HP DeskJet printer cable, follow the instructions below:

  1. Verify that the computer and the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer are turned off.

  2. Connect the printer end of the parallel cable firmly to the parallel port on the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.

  3. Snap both clips onto the notches on the parallel cable connector.

  4. Connect the computer end of the parallel cable to the parallel port of the computer and tighten the screws on the connector (to locate the parallel port on the computer, refer to the computer User’s Guide).

    NOTE: For best performance, use an IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable (HP part number C2950A or C2951A) and connect the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer directly to the computer.

Connect the power cord

To connect the power cord of the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, follow the instructions below:

  1. Plug the power cord firmly into the printer’s power socket.

  2. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.

Load cut sheet paper

The HP DeskJet 1000 series printer prints on plain paper and most other types of paper. Most plain paper used for photocopying yields good results.

Main bottom media tray

To load the main bottom media tray of the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, follow the instructions below:

  1. Raise the output tray and extend the paper width and length adjusters to the maximum.

  2. Insert up to a 0.6-inch (15 mm) stack of paper, aligning the right edge of the paper stack against the right side of the tray, print side down. Slide the paper in until it stops.

  3. Slide the paper width and length adjusters in until they press lightly against the paper stack.

  4. Lower the output tray to its horizontal position.

Alternative top media feed

To load the alternative top media feed of the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, follow the instructions below:

  1. If the paper used in the alternative feed is wider than the paper in the main bottom tray, the main bottom tray's paper width adjuster should be moved to the far left.

  2. Extend the alternative feed paper width adjuster to the maximum.

  3. Insert up to a maximum of 10 sheets of paper, aligning the right edge of the paper stack against the right side of the tray, print side down. Slide the paper in until it stops.

  4. Slide the alternative feed paper width adjuster in until it presses lightly against the paper stack.

    NOTE: Paper does not need to be removed from the main bottom tray when using the alternative feed. The HP DeskJet 1000 series printer will check for paper feeding from the alternative feed. If paper is detected, the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer will pick paper from there without checking the main tray.

Install the print cartridges

To install print cartridges in the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, follow the instructions below:

NOTE: Use only the recommended print cartridges (HP part number 51645A for black and HP part number 51641A for color). Both print cartridges are installed in the same manner.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.

  2. Open the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer's top cover. The print cartridge cradle will move to the center of the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, and the Print Cartridge light will flash.

  3. Remove the color print cartridge from its packing box.

  4. Gently remove the tape covering the ink nozzles. Be careful not to touch the ink nozzles or the copper contacts.

  5. Lift up the print cartridge latch in the print cartridge cradle.

  6. Insert the print cartridge into the cradle slot and push down the cartridge firmly.

  7. Push down the latch to secure the print cartridge.

  8. Remove the black print cartridge from its packaging box and repeat Steps 4 through 7.

  9. Close the top cover.

    NOTE: If the recommended print cartridge is not installed or the print cartridge is not properly installed, the print cartridge holder will move back to the loading position, and the Print Cartridge light will continue to blink.
    CAUTION: The ink in the print cartridge has been carefully formulated by HP to ensure superior print quality and compatibility with your HP DeskJet 1000 series printer. Damage to the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer or the print cartridge resulting from modifying or refilling the print cartridge is not the responsibility of HP.

Printing a self-test

To print a self-test page from the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer, follow the instructions below:

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer.

  2. Press and hold the Power button. Press the Resume button four times and release the Power button.

Install printer software

Before the HP DeskJet printer can be used, the printer software must be installed. To install the printer software, the computer should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • 486DX-66 MHz processor

  • 8 MB RAM

  • Windows 3.1 or Windows 95

  • 15 MB free hard disk space (5 MB is used by the driver, and 10 MB must be free to print.)

  • Windows must be installed on the computer's hard drive.

Installing from a starter CD-ROM in Windows 3.1

  1. Start Microsoft (R) Windows and close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.

    1. On the keyboard, press CTRL+ESC to retrieve the Task List.

    2. Highlight any program in the list (except Program Manager) and select End Task.

    3. Repeat steps a and b until all programs except Program Manager are closed.

    4. Once the Task List shows only Program Manager, select Cancel to close the Task List.

  2. Place the Starter CD in the CD-ROM drive.

  3. In the Program Manager window, select File and Run.

  4. At the Command Line box, type the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive followed by :\INSTALL and select OK. For example, if the CD-ROM is the D drive, type D:\INSTALL.

  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation of the CD.

  6. On the Starter CD main menu, select the Printer Driver and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

  7. After the installation, restart Windows.

Installing from a starter CD-ROM in Windows 95

  1. Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.

    1. On the keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to retrieve the Close Program window.

    2. Highlight any program in the list except Explorer and Systray and select End Task.

    3. Repeat Steps a and b until all programs except Explorer and Systray are closed.

    4. Once the Close Program window shows only Explorer and Systray, select Cancel to close the Close Program window.

  2. Put the Starter CD in the CD-ROM drive.

  3. The computer will recognize the CD and run the setup. If it does not, open the CD-ROM icon in My Computer.

  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation of the CD.

  5. On the Starter CD main menu, select the Printer Driver.

  6. Follow the instructions. At the Manufacturer's window, select Have Disk.

  7. Select Browse and the CD-ROM drive, usually D.

  8. Select the Driver and Disk1 folders for the English driver or select the Fdriver and Disk1 folders for the French driver. For example: D:\DRIVER\DISK1 or D:\FDRIVER\DISK1.

  9. Select OK in the Browse window and OK on the Install From Disk window.

  10. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation of the printer software.

Installing from floppy disks in Windows 3.1

  1. Start Microsoft Windows and close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.

    1. On the keyboard, press CTRL+ESC to retrieve the Task List.

    2. Highlight any program in the list except Program Manager and select End Task.

    3. Repeat steps a and b until all programs except Program Manager are closed.

    4. Once the Task List shows only Program Manager, select Cancel to close the Task List.

  2. Insert Disk 1 into the disk drive A or B of the computer.

  3. In the Program Manager window, choose File and Run.

  4. At the Command Line box, type A:\SETUP or B:\SETUP (whichever drive contains Disk 1) and select OK.

  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation of the printer software.

  6. After the installation, restart Windows.

Installing from floppy disks in Windows 95

Turn on the HP DeskJet 1000 series printer before turning on the computer. Windows 95 should recognize the attached printer and automatically begin the installation instructions. If a screen with instructions does not appear, do the following:

  1. Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.

    1. On the keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to retrieve the Close Program window.

    2. Highlight any program in the list except Explorer and Systray and select End Task.

    3. Repeat steps a and b until all programs except Explorer and Systray are closed.

    4. Once the Close Program window shows only Explorer and Systray, select Cancel to close the Close Program window.

  2. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.

  3. Open the Add Printer icon.

  4. Select Next until a list of manufacturers and printer models appears.

  5. Select the Have Disk button, insert Disk 1, and select OK.

  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation of the printer software.

Align print cartridges

For best print quality, align the print cartridges whenever a cartridge is installed. This ensures that black and color inks will align when printed together on the same text, line, or graphic. To align the print cartridges, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open the DJ1000C Toolbox.

  2. Select the Maintenance tab and select Align the print cartridges. Follow the instructions to align the print cartridges.

To print a Self-Test page from the ToolBox, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the HP DeskJet 1000C Toolbox.

  2. Select the Maintenance tab and select Print a Self-Test. Follow the instructions to print a Self-Test page.
