HP DeskJet 1000 Series Printer - Paper Feed Problems

ISSUE: Paper does not feed into the printer properly.

SOLUTION: Follow the instructions below:

  • Reload the paper. If too many sheets of paper were loaded, remove some paper.

  • Paper is damaged, wrinkled, or curled. Replace or remove the paper.

  • Paper in the stack may be of a different type, size, and weight. Ensure papers in the stack are of the same type, size, and weight.

  • Clean the paper pick roller in the main bottom media tray with a cloth dampened with water. The paper pick roller is located in the back right hand corner of the main bottom media tray. The roller is about 1-inch wide and has a flat side so the roller is not completely round.

  • Clean the drive rollers inside the printer. There are five drive rollers and they are accessible by lifting the top cover of the printer. Clean the rollers using a cloth dampened with water. The drive rollers can be rotated by holding down the Resume button located on the front panel of the printer.

WARNING: Be careful not to let the cloth feed into drive rollers while cleaning.
  • Remove the paper from the main bottom media tray. Perform a Self-Test (with the paper out) by holding the Power button down, pressing the Resume button four times, and then releasing the Power button. Watch the portion of the main bottom media tray that is inside the printer and see if it rises up to meet the paper pick roller. If the portion of the main bottom media tray that is inside the printer does not rise up, locate the two sets of white gears below the carriage rod on the left side of the printer. The clutch is located in the rightmost set of gears and is the smooth white piece to the right of the first gear. Lightly tap the clutch, with a finger, to engage the clutch.

ISSUE: Paper does not eject from the printer.

SOLUTION: Follow the instructions below.

  • Paper is jammed in the printer. Clear the paper jam using the instructions below.

    1. Open the printer cover.

    2. Push the cartridge cradle to the right side.

    3. Remove any paper from the main bottom media tray and the alternative top media feed.

    4. Tear or cut off the remaining portion of the piece of paper that is in the main bottom media tray or the alternative top media feed.

CAUTION: Take care not to rub your hands against the brown plastic and metal star wheels inside the printer. This may damage the star wheels or injure your hand.
    5. Free any wrinkled paper inside the printer and press the Resume button until the printer ejects the entire paper. If this does not work, turn the printer off, free any wrinkled paper, and pull the sheet of paper forward out of the printer.

    6. Close the printer cover, load paper in the printer, and turn the printer on.

  • If one of the three black kicker arms that eject the paper stay in the up position and block the paper feeding out of the printer, the printer should be sent in for service. Contact the HP Customer Support listed in the User's Guide.

  • The computer was turned off while the printer was printing. Turn off the printer, turn on the computer, and then turn on the printer.

  • Paper did not receive a form feed command from the software program. Press the Resume button to initiate a manual form feed.

NOTE: The last printed page will not be "kicked" out of the printer fully, but will be ejected properly when the next print job is sent.

ISSUE: Paper is ejected from the printer and slides off the end of the output tray.

SOLUTION: Ensure the output tabs on the printer are in the up position for standard media and are in the down position for thicker media.

ISSUE: Multiple sheets of paper are fed into the printer at the same time.

SOLUTION: Follow the instructions below.

  • The sheets of paper are stuck together. Remove the paper stack, separate the sheets by fanning, and then reload the paper stack.

  • Paper in the stack may be of a different type, size, and weight. Ensure the papers in the stack are of the same type, size, and weight.

  • Paper is not fed into the printer properly. Follow the instructions in the User's Guide for loading paper.

ISSUE: Printing is slanted.

SOLUTION: Reload the paper and follow the instructions below:

  • Remove the paper and then reload.

  • Ensure the paper width and length adjusters fit snugly against the left and bottom edges of the paper stack so the paper is being fed "squarely" into the printer.

  • Check that there are no more than 100 sheets of paper loaded in the main bottom media tray or 10 sheets of paper in the alternative top media feed.

  • Check to make sure that only one type of paper is loaded in the main bottom media tray or alternative top media feed.

  • Ensure the paper weight falls between 16 and 36 lb. bond.

  • Try a different type of paper.

  • Clean the drive rollers inside the printer. There are five drive rollers and they are accessible by lifting the top cover of the printer. Clean the rollers using a cloth dampened with water. • The printer or software settings may be set to Manual Feed. Insert an envelope into the left side of the manual feed slot with the print side up.

ISSUE: Envelopes that are printed from the main bottom media tray or the alternative top media feed have the top of the flap slightly wrinkled and the return address is smeared.

SOLUTION: Print the envelopes from the rear manual feed slot so the envelopes will feed straight through the printer without wrinkling the top of the flap.

ISSUE: Cards do not feed into the printer.

SOLUTION: Follow the instructions below.
