HP and Compaq PCs - How to Create a Startup Disk (Windows 95, 98 and ME)

A startup disk is a floppy disk that contains copies of the key files to start your PC and it also contains important troubleshooting software tools. This disk is very important if your PC should ever have problems starting.

If you do not have at least one startup disk, create one. If your PC is already having problems and requires a startup disk, you can create a startup disk on another PC that has the same version of Windows (Windows 95, 98, ME).

How to create a Windows startup disk

Get one blank, 1.44 MB formatted 3.5 inch floppy disk and use the following steps to create a startup disk:

  1. From the Windows Desktop, click Start, Settings, then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties window will appear.

  3. Select the Start-up Disk tab.

  4. Write "Windows Startup Disk" on the disk label.

  5. Place the formatted disk in the floppy-disk drive.

  6. Click the Create Disk button and then click OK.

  7. When complete, click OK to close the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.

The disk has been created and can now be used.
