HP Jetdirect Connectivity Card - JDCC, USB Card Installation with an HP Business Inkjet 2200 Series Printer

Installing a USB hub

  1. Plug a USB cable into the hub, then plug it into the back of the computer.

  2. You should now be able to see how New Hardware Device Manager is detected, then step through to search for drivers. If this message is not visible, check the “Troubleshooting tips” section in this document.

  3. If prompted for a driver, click C:\ in the selection box. An INF driver will be detected and installation will be complete.

  4. To verify installation, go to Device Manager and select the Universal Serial Bus Controller. You should see three devices: USB Controller, USB Root Hub, and Generic USB Hub (which is the one just installed).

    CAUTION: Two non-powered hubs cannot be used together.


Connectivity card installation and configuration

NOTE: USB is a Plug and Play technology, but still requires a driver to be installed for most devices.
  1. Turn the HP 2200 series printer off, then install the card.

  2. Plug the USB cable into the card, and into the computer.

  3. Unlike some peripherals, the card receives its power from the printer. The printer must be turned On and in the Ready state.

  4. The New Hardware Device Manager should detect the new card. If not, check the “Troubleshooting tips” section in this document.

  5. The card requires special software drivers. The drivers are located on the floppy disk that accompanies the product.

  6. From the Add New Hardware Wizard screen for HP Jetdirect J4135A, click Next.

    NOTE: Some machines may detect an Unknown Device in the Add New Hardware Wizard. This does not refer to HP Jetdirect J4135A. Click Cancel. If the Add New Hardware Wizard does not appear, refer to the troubleshooting tips on the HP Internet Web site.
  7. In the next screen, select Search for the best driver for the device, then click Next.

  8. Click Specify a location, then Browse.

    CAUTION: Do not click Next.
  9. Insert the card’s disk into the appropriate drive of the computer.

  10. Browse the disk and select the WIN 98 directory. Click OK to close the Browse screen and return to the wizard.

  11. Click Next. The Add New Hardware Wizard searches for the HP Jetdirect J4135A Connectivity Card driver. The wizard may prompt you with an updated driver. If so, click the appropriate driver, then click Next.

  12. When the driver file is located, click Next to install the driver.

  13. When notified that the driver software is installed, click Finish. If the driver is not found, click Cancel. Check the “Troubleshooting tips” section in this document.

  14. After multiple auto discovery items appear, the Add New Hardware Wizard screen reappears (this time for HP Jetdirect printer to install the printer driver). Click Next.

  15. Select Display a list of all the devices in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, then click Next.

  16. Select Printer from the list of devices, then click Next.

  17. Select HP from the Manufacturer list, and select the printer model from the Printer list. If unable to find the printer model in the list, you must have the HP Business Inkjet 2200 PCL5/PostScript Level 2 Upgrade Kit (C5935A) installed in the HP 2200 Series Printer in order to select another printer model to use as the driver. If you have the PCL5/PostScript Level 2 upgrade kit installed, you can try selecting from the HP Deskjet 1600C, the HP LaserJet 4500, or the HP LaserJet 8550 printer models. Click Next.

    NOTE: Do not browse for the driver file on the printer CD-ROM.
  18. Once the driver file is located, click Next to install the driver. If prompted for a printer disk, do the following:

    • If you installed the printer from floppy disk, insert the disk. Click OK.

    • If you installed the printer from CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM and click Browse to select the driver’s location on the CD-ROM. Click OK.

    • If you downloaded the printer driver from the Internet, click Browse to select the driver’s location on the hard disk. Click OK.

      NOTE: If prompted for an updated driver, select Keep existing driver. Click Next.
  19. In the Available Ports list, select the port associated with the HP Jetdirect Printer with the format DOT4_#, where # is the largest number available, then click Next. If the port does not appear in the Ports list, check the “Troubleshooting tips” section in this document.

  20. Follow the remaining instructions on the screen to complete the installation. If you were required to choose the HP Deskjet 1600C, the HP LaserJet 4500, or the HP LaserJet 8550 printer driver in Step 17, you now need to install the software that came with the printer.

    1. During the printer installation, when you are asked to select a port, select the same DOT4_# that you selected previously in Step 19.

    2. Once the printer installation is complete, from the Taskbar, click Start. Click Settings, then Printers.

    3. Click the printer you just installed.

    4. From the File menu, select Properties.

    5. Click the Details tab.

    6. In the Print using the following driver drop-down combo box, click the arrow to select the driver you just installed.

  21. Send a test page to verify a successful installation. Click Finish to complete the installation.


Uninstalling USB

On the floppy disk that came with the product, there is an uninstaller for Windows 98.

  1. Click Start, then Run. Type: A:\WIN98\UNINSTALL\UNINSTAL.EXE.

  2. The uninstaller will complete with a message telling you to restart the computer.

    NOTE: Restarting the computer is required for a successful uninstall. The uninstall should not affect any devices other than the HP Jetdirect Connectivity Card drivers.


Troubleshooting tips

If the computer does not detect a new device

  1. Unplug the USB cable from the back of the host and slowly reinsert.

  2. Check to determine if the USB ports are enabled by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop. If no icon is visible, open Microsoft(R) Windows Explorer. Locate the My Computer folder on the hard disk, then right-click the folder. Click Properties, then perform the following:

    1. Click the Device Manager tab.

    2. Right-click the plus (+) before the Universal Serial Bus Controller item.

    3. If no such item appears, see the computer vendor for proper installation of the USB ports.

    4. After you have expanded the item, make sure you have at least a USB Root Hub and a USB controller, and that no red mark appears at the icon to the left.

      NOTE: If a red circle/slash appears on the icon, this indicates that the ports are disabled. Click the USB Root Hub, then click Properties.
    5. At the bottom of the Properties box, clear the check box by clicking Disable the device. Click OK.

    6. Return to the Device Manager screen and click Refresh. If the red circle/slash still appears on the icon, refer to the computer vendor for proper installation of the USB ports.

  3. In the Control Panel, look for new hardware by clicking Add New Hardware. Click Next, 3 times, and perform a search to determine if there is new hardware to be installed.

  4. Under Device Manager, look for Unknown Devices in Universal Serial Bus Controllers or Other Devices. They will have red circle/slash on the icon, select the Unknown Device, click Remove, then click Refresh.

  5. Restart the system. Turn off the printer, then turn on the printer again.

If the driver is not found

  1. Make sure the floppy disk is in drive.

  2. Browse the floppy for the HPJDCUSB.INF file in the WIN98 directory. If no such file exists, you will need to download a new copy of the driver from the Web.

  3. Run the uninstaller (uninstal.exe), restart the system, and try installing the card again.

If the port (DOT4_#) is not listed

If the port (DOT4_#) does not appear in the ports list, click Cancel, then click OK. Click Cancel again and restart the system. When prompted by the wizard, install the printer driver and the DOT4_# should be there.
