HP LaserJet 4/4 Plus Printer - Error 13, Paper Jam Troubleshooting

ISSUE: An HP LaserJet 4/4+ printer is having paper jams.
SOLUTION: Use the following steps to troubleshoot the problem:
NOTE: Refer to the troubleshooting section of the "HP LaserJet 4/4+ and 4M/4M+ Printers User’s Manual" for additional detail and illustrations.
  1. Ensure packaging material has been removed from the printer.

    1. Remove cardboard and two packing pieces securing the transfer roller from inside the printer.

    2. Remove packing piece from inside the paper cassette.

    3. Remove packing piece from the fusing assembly.

    4. Check to make sure fuser levers are in the down position.

  2. Determine where the jams are occurring. Thoroughly inspect the printer.

    1. If the jam occurs in the fusing assembly, check to see if the paper exit sensor lever is stuck.

    2. Remove the paper cassette and check the in-tray slot.

    3. c Open the top of the printer and remove the toner cartridge to check inside the printer.

    4. Lift the metal registration cover to check for paper.

    5. Open the rear panel and check the fuser area.

    6. Remove any paper, scraps or other items that may inhibit the print path or a paper sensor.

  3. Test print from each tray.

    PC TRAY JAMS

    1. Verify that the tray is properly filled. Do not overfill. Arrows on the left rear of the cassette indicate appropriate paper level.

    2. Verify that the paper is under the metal retaining tab in the front left corner of the tray.

    3. Press down on the paper to verify the spring action of the tray.

    4. If this is a Universal tray, verify that the paper size dial matches the paper size loaded in the tray and that the length and width guides are flush against the paper.

    LC TRAY

    1. Verify that the tray is properly filled. Do not overfill beyond the arrows on the left rear of the tray.

    2. Verify that the paper is under the metal retaining tab in the front left corner of the tray.

    3. Verify that the paper size dial matches the paper size loaded in the tray and that the length and width paper guides are flush against the paper.

    4. Load a full ream of paper, then adjust the spring tension dial. The bar should be adjusted so that it is in the center of the window.

NOTE: Only adjust the spring tension when the tray is filled with a full ream of paper.
  4. Check the paper to verify that it is within specifications for the printer.

  5. Check to make sure the Transfer Roller is properly seated in its guides. This is done by pressing down lightly on the blue gear at the left end of the Transfer Roller. If the Transfer Roller is completely out of its guides, then reinstall the Transfer Roller following the information found on page 6-20 of the 4/4M manual and on Page 7-10 in the 4/4M+ Manual

  6. If the jam persists, contact your local service center.
