HP LaserJet 5Si and 5Si MX Printers - Microsoft (R) Windows Driver and Printing System Installation

PRINTING SYSTEM INSTALLATION

NOTE: If you are installing the HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX Printing System for Windows Software to a Windows 95 system, make sure you have Printing System v 2.20 (indicated on disk label). Prior versions of the Printing System are not fully compatible with Windows 95. You can obtain the newest version of the Printing System by contacting the HP Distribution Center in your region to order the disks (see your User's Manual.) In addition, the Printing System software is available as separate components on HP Electronic Services (Internet, CompuServe, America Online).

HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX printers shipped before January 1996 have the older version of the Printing System software. It is recommended that you upgrade your software to the 2.20 version even if you are using Windows 3.x.

The HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX printer Printing Software for Windows has two installation methods:

  1. TYPICAL - The installer program for this installation option installs all components of the printing software, including the PCL Printer Driver, the PostScript (R) Printer Driver and HP LaserJet 5Si MX PPD, HP JetAdmin for NetWare, HP JetPrint for NetWare, and HP FontSmart.

  2. CUSTOM - This installation option allows you to select one or any combination of the following choices: PCL Printer Driver, PostScript Printer Driver, HP JetAdmin for NetWare, HP JetPrint for NetWare, and HP FontSmart, provided your system meets the minimum requirements for the choice(s) selected.

Installation Help is available through dialog boxes. Press the HELP key for access.

NOTE: The PostScript driver is only included with the HP LaserJet 5Si MX printer and does not come with the HP LaserJet 5Si printer.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS AND WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS V 3.1 AND 3.11 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION METHOD:

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected.

  2. In Program Manager:

  3. Select File, Run. Type A:SETUP (or B:SETUP), select OK.

  4. Make selections indicated by dialog boxes.

  5. Once the installation has been completed successfully, a dialog box will appear with the option to "View Read Me File."

NOTE: All of the Printing Software disks may not be used if "Custom" is chosen as the installation method.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION METHOD FOR VERSION 1.00 OF THE PRINTING SYSTEM:

  1. Insert Disk 1 of the HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si printing software in the floppy disk drive.

  2. In Windows 95, click on Start, and Run.

  3. Type in A:Setup (or B:Setup) and press ENTER.

  4. Follow the instructions on screen.

INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS 95 FOR VERSION 2.2O OF THE PRINTING SYSTEM:

  1. Insert Disk 1 of the HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si printing software in the floppy disk drive.

  2. In Windows 95, click on START, SETTINGS, PRINTER.

  3. Double-Click on "Add Printers."

  4. Follow the instructions on screen. When you are asked to select a printer driver, choose "Have Disk."

  5. Type in the appropriate letter of your floppy disk drive and click OK.

  6. Continue to follow the instructions and answer the questions on the screen. The HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX Printing System will launch, allowing you to install all of the components of the Printing System, not just the PCL printer driver.

WINDOWS SOFTWARE V 3.1 CONTROL PANEL INSTALLATION

As an alternative, you may install the PCL printer driver through the Windows Control Panel in Windows v 3.1 (also known as an "OEMSETUP" installation). This is not recommended because not all the software will be installed when using this method. If you have previously installed a version of the HP LaserJet 5Si Printing Software, it is highly recommended that you use the normal installation procedure to install new HP LaserJet Printing Software. This will avoid incompatibilities between older versions of the HP LaserJet Printing Systems and this one.

The PostScript driver will NOT support a Control Panel installation and must be installed using the "Setup" method in either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

SHARED WINDOWS PRINTING SYSTEM INSTALLATION (WINDOWS 3.1)

Before running the installation software, close all applications, close the Microsoft Office Manager, turn off any virus checkers or TSR (terminate stay resident) programs and restart Windows. (After installing the HP LaserJet Printing Software, you can turn these programs back on.)

This installation process is for users sharing a networked configuration of Windows 3.1.

  1. The Network Administrator should choose the "Network Administrator" method of installation. (This option only shows up if the installer detects a shared copy of Windows.) This step needs to be done only once and copies all files to the shared directory of Windows on the network.

  2. Each client requiring access to the driver will need to run the HP LaserJet Printing Software Installer (File, Run, A:\SETUP) and choose one of the installation methods. No files will be copied to the client's local drive, but WIN.INI will be updated to provide access to the driver. If HP FontSmart, HP JetAdmin or HP JetPrint are installed, only the WIN.INI will be updated. The WIN.INI is updated and an "HP LaserJet 5Si Printer" group is created in the client's Program Manager. (Not all disks are required for the client installations.)

NOTE: The Printing System software v 2.20 supports installation to a shared copy of Windows 95. However, instructions are not yet available.

INSTALLATION LOG

In the \Windows directory, a file is created while the print software is installing that shows all the files that were copied, renamed, or modified. The installer also records user selections in the installer and the environment of the PC it is being installed into. The filename is HPLJ5SI.LOG.
