HP LaserJet 4100 Series Printers - Adding Memory to the Printer

Introduction

HP LaserJet 4100 series printers have three Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) slots for upgrading memory:

  • More printer memory - DIMMs are available in 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 MB, for a maximum of 256 MB addressable memory.

  • Flash memory DIMMs - available in 2 and 4 MB (Unlike standard printer memory, flash DIMMs can be used to permanently store downloaded items in the printer, even when the printer is off).

  • DIMM-based accessory fonts, macros, and patterns.

  • Other DIMM-based printer languages and printer options.

    NOTE: Single in-line memory modules (SIMMs) used on previous HP LaserJet printers are not compatible with HP LaserJet 4100 series printers.

The printer may require more memory if complex graphics or PostScript (R) (PS) documents are often printed, the optional duplexer is used, many downloaded fonts are used, or ProRes 1200 is used for printing. Added memory also provides more flexibility in supporting job retention features, such as Private Jobs, or Proof and Hold jobs.

The printer has two enhanced input and output (EIO) slots for expanding capabilities with the following:

  • A network card

  • A connectivity card for serial, USB, or AppleTalk

  • A mass storage device, such as a hard disk

To find out how much memory is installed in the printer, or to find out what is installed in the EIO slots, print a configuration page (see the section below on printing a configuration page).

Installing additional memory

CAUTION: Static electricity can damage DIMMs. When handling DIMMs, wear an anti-static wrist strap, or touch bare metal on the printer frequently after touching the surface of the DIMM’s antistatic package.
  1. Print a configuration page to find out how much memory is installed in the printer (see the section below on printing a configuration page).

  2. Turn the printer off (see Figure 1).

  3. Unplug the power cord and disconnect all cables.

  4. Grasp the printer cover (as illustrated), and pull it firmly toward the rear of the printer until it stops.

  5. Remove the printer cover (as illustrated).

  6. Open the DIMM access door by pulling on the metal tab.

  7. Remove the new DIMM from the antistatic package. Hold the DIMM with fingers against the side edges and thumbs against the back edge. Align the notches on the DIMM with the DIMM slot (Make sure the locks on each side of the DIMM slot are open, or outward).

  8. Press the DIMM straight into the desired slot (press firmly). Make sure the locks on each side of the DIMM snap inward into place (To remove a DIMM, the locks must be released).

    NOTE: Do not move or remove the DIMM in the lower slot as shown in Figure 6, call-out 2.

  9. Close the DIMM access door. Make sure it locks into place.

  10. Set the bottom of the cover onto the printer. Make sure the bottom tabs on the cover fit into the corresponding slots in the printer. Rotate the cover up towards the printer.

  11. Slide the cover toward the front of the printer until it clicks into place.

  12. Reattach the cables and the power cord, then turn the printer on, and test the DIMM (see the section below on checking memory installation).

Checking memory installation

Follow this procedure to verify that DIMMs are installed correctly:

  1. Check the printer Control Panel displays, "READY," when the printer is turned on. If an error message appears, a DIMM might be installed incorrectly. Check the printer messages (see the User Guide section on understanding printer messages).

  2. Print a new configuration page and a menu map (see the sections below on printing a menu map and printing a configuration page).

  3. Check the memory section on the configuration page, and compare it to the configuration page printed before the DIMM installation. If the amount of memory has not increased, the DIMM might be installed incorrectly (repeat the installation procedure), or the DIMM might be defective (try a new DIMM).

    NOTE: If a printer language (personality) is installed, check the Installed Personalities and Options section on the configuration page. This area should list the new printer language.

Saving resources (permanent resources)

Utilities or jobs downloaded to the printer sometimes include resources (for example, fonts, macros, or patterns). Resources that are internally marked as permanent remain in the printer's memory until the printer's power is turned off.

Use the following guidelines when using the Page Description Language (PDL) ability to mark resources as permanent. For technical details, see an appropriate PDL reference for PCL or PS.

  • Mark resources as permanent only when it is absolutely necessary that they remain in memory while the printer is turned on.

  • Send permanent resources to the printer only at the beginning of a print job and not while the printer is printing.

    NOTE: Overusing permanent resources or downloading them while the printer is printing might decrease the printer's performance or its ability to print complex pages.

Installing EIO cards or mass storage

Follow this procedure to install an EIO card or a mass storage device:

  1. Turn the printer off.

  2. Remove the two screws and cover plate from the EIO 1 or EIO 2 slot on the back of the printer.

  3. Install the EIO card or the mass storage device in the EIO slot, and tighten the screws (see Figure 10).

  4. Turn the printer on, and print a configuration page to verify that the new EIO device is recognized (see the section below on printing a configuration page).

    NOTE: For information on connecting an EIO card to a network and installing the network software, see the User Guide section on printer software and also the Getting Started Guide that came with the printer.

Use HP Resource Manager to manage fonts on a mass storage device. For more information, see the User Guide section on the HP Resource Manager, or see the printer driver online help.

Printing a menu map

Use the menu map to view current settings for the menus and items available in the Control Panel. At the printer Control Panel, do the following:

  1. Press MENU until Information Menu appears.

  2. Press ITEM until Print Menu Map appears.

  3. Press SELECT to print the menu map.

Printing a configuration page

Use the configuration page to view current printer settings, to help troubleshoot printer problems, or to verify installation of optional accessories, such as memory (DIMMs), paper trays, and printer languages. At the printer Control Panel, do the following:

  1. Press MENU until Information Menu appears.

  2. Press ITEM until Print Configuration appears.

  3. Press SELECT to print the page.
