Software features

Product software components for Windows operating systems

The HP LaserJet 1200 product includes the following software components for Microsoft (R) Windows operating systems:

NOTE: For the printer-only configurations of the HP LaserJet 1200, only the printer driver components are installed.
Component
Description
Installer software
Installs all of the HP LaserJet 1200 product software.
Configuration software
(HP LaserJet Device Configuration Utility)
Helps to configure the HP LaserJet 1200 product.
Driver software
NOTE: The Scan Settings driver is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
Print, copy, and scan with the computer and the HP LaserJet 1200 product. This software includes:
  • The HP LaserJet 1200 printer drivers for PCL 6 and PCL 5e. (The default install is PCL 6. To install the PCL 5e driver, use the Custom install or Add Printer options.)

  • The HP LaserJet 1200 PS printer driver and PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file for printing with PostScript Level 2 emulation. (The default install is PCL 6.)

  • NOTE: To install the PS driver, use the Windows Add Printer wizard. Do not use the Installer program's Custom option.

  • The HP LaserJet Scan Settings scan driver (TWAIN scan driver).

HP LaserJet Director
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
When inserting a document into the document feeder tray and pressing the Scan button, the HP LaserJet 1220 signals the computer to display the Director interface on the computer screen. This "pop-up" feature gives immediate access to the product's copy, scan, and Scan-to-E-mail functions.
For Windows 95 systems, the Director serves as the main interface for access to the copy and scan functions. The Scan-to-E-mail function is not available.
NOTE: To scan in network configurations in which the HP LaserJet 1220 product is shared via an HP Jetdirect print server, simply “lock” the channel by selecting the Scan icon from the HP Document Manager on the computer. Then, insert paper into the document feeder tray on the HP LaserJet 1220 product, and press the Scan button. The document will scan back to the computer. When the channel is locked, other tasks that require the scan paper path cannot be used; it will stay locked until a document is scanned, or for five minutes, whichever comes first. Other users can still print, but they cannot scan or copy over the network. However, walk-up users can initiate copy jobs from the copier/scanner control panel.
HP LaserJet Document Manager
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
NOTE: This component and the features it provides are not available for Windows 95.
This is the primary interface for most of the software components. It provides an easy-to-use document management system that includes flexible filing, as well as access to device functionality and all major software applications. This software allows printing, faxing (using third-party fax software), copying, and scanning from the computer. It also annotates, organizes, and stores scanned items.
The native file format for the Document Manager is the .HPD file format.
The HP Document Manager provides access to the HP LaserJet 1220 product configuration, device status, and report log features, as well as the Help system.
The HP Document Manager also provides access to the HP LaserJet toolbox.
HP Document Viewer
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
NOTE: This component and the features it provides are not available for Windows 95.
The HP Document Viewer is a sub-component of the Document Manager. Use it to view, manipulate, and annotate documents in the Desktop.
NOTE: Windows 95 users can view scanned documents in the HP Photo Center software, but will not have some of the manipulation and annotation features provided by the HP Document Viewer.
HP LaserJet Copier program
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
Allows copying from the HP LaserJet 1220 product. Access the Software Copier from either the HP LaserJet Director or the HP LaserJet Document Manager. Use HP LaserJet Copier to perform the following tasks:
  • Print multiple copies of the same document (up to 30 pages)

  • Enable or disable collation

  • Reduce or enlarge the image

  • Adjust the contrast

  • Specify the copy quality

The Copy Plus feature allows printing color copies or printing copies on another printer. The copies are scanned to the computer, then sent to the alternative printer that has been selected. This feature also accesses advanced features, such as copying N-up and including watermarks.
(Windows 95 users can access the Copier program through the HP LaserJet Director.)
HP LaserJet Scanner program
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
Select Scan options, then send the scan to the Document Viewer (the default) to store the image to a file, or to perform an OCR scan of the document. In the Desktop Viewer, edit - for example, crop, rotate, highlight, and annotate - the scanned document. Access the scanning software from either the Director or the Document Manager.
The default file format for the Scan-to-E-mail feature is Adobe (R) Acrobat (R) PDF; other supported formats include HP Document format (.HPD), GIF, TIFF, and BMP.
(On Windows 95 systems, the scan button on the HP LaserJet Director launches the HP LaserJet Photo Center, or the Windows Imaging program. However, the Scan-to-E-mail function is not available.)
Also, scan directly to TWAIN-compliant applications. The product supports TWAIN, STI, and WIA scanning protocols.
ReadIRIS Professional 6.0 OCR software by IRIS
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
Allows converting scanned images into text that can be edited in word-processing programs. ReadIRIS Pro 6.0 supports 2-byte languages for Asian characters. For example, it recognizes up to 8,000 traditional Chinese characters.
NOTE: Windows 95 users need to start ReadIRIS and scan directly into the application to perform OCR scanning. The OCR button on the HP LaserJet Director will launch the ReadIRIS application.
HP Photo Center
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
The HP Photo Center allows modifying images from both existing images and scanned data. It supports full 24-bit color image editing.
The HP Photo Editor provides image-editing functionality similar to that provided by Adobe (R) PhotoDeluxe (TM) and Microsoft’s PictureIt! applications. In addition, the HP Photo Center provides advanced text editing functionality similar to that provided by Word Art in Microsoft’s Publisher 98 application.
The HP Photo Editor exists as both a standalone application and as a plug-in enhancement to the Desktop.
Key Application Linking and Integration
NOTE: This component is installed only on the HP LaserJet 1220 print/copy/scan product, or when the copier/scanner is added to a HP LaserJet 1200 printer.
NOTE: This component and the features it provides are not available for Windows 95.
During installation, applications supported by the HP LaserJet 1220 Software - such as word processors, spreadsheets, image editors, and active e-mail software that are selected during installation - are detected on the system and integrated into the Document Manager desktop.
In addition, each time the computer is started, the software updates the list of applications available for linking. Reconfigure the applications links from the Document Manager.
