HP LaserJet Printers - How to Start and Stop the Print Spooler in Windows 2000 and XP

ISSUE: How do I start or stop the print spooler for any HP LaserJet printer in Microsoft (R) Windows 2000 or Windows XP?
NOTE: If the following options are not available then contact your Systems Administrator and have them start and stop the spooler In some network environments, normal users will not have sufficient privileges to perform this.
SOLUTION: Perform the following steps to enable or disable the print spooler in Windows 2000 or XP.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP Classic View

  1. Click Start , Settings , then Control Panel .

  2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon in the control panel.

  3. Double-click Services .

  4. Right-click the print spooler.

  5. Click Start or Stop .

Windows XP Standard View

  1. Click Start , then Control Panel .

  2. Click the Performance and Maintenance icon.

  3. Click the Administrative Tools icon.

  4. Double-click the Services icon.

  5. Right-click the print spooler.

  6. Click Start or Stop .

DOS Prompt

  1. Click Start and then Run from the Windows desktop.

  2. Type CMD in the open text box and click OK .

  3. Type one of the following commands without the quotes and press ENTER on the keyboard.

  • "Net start spooler"

  • "Net stop spooler"
