HP LaserJet 2200 Series Printer - Software Uninstall and Reinstall for Windows 98 or Millennium Edition (Me) on a USB Port

This document details how to uninstall the HP LaserJet 2200 series product from a computer running Microsoft (R) Windows 98 or Windows Me. Uninstall the driver using one of the three options below.

NOTE: If the three options listed below do not successfully uninstall the HP LaserJet 2200 series product software, go to the section titled File Removal Procedure .

Option 1: Use the Uninstaller

  1. Leave the USB cable attached from the HP LaserJet 2200 series product to the computer.

  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Uninstall.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click the End Task button.

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed, except for "Explorer" and "Systray".

  3. From the Windows desktop click Start , Programs , HP LaserJet 2200 , Tools , and then HP LaserJet 2200 Uninstaller .

  4. Follow the instructions in the Uninstall Wizard.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the uninstall.

    2. On the Components screen, click Select All , then Next . The Uninstall Wizard should start removing files.

    3. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, click No to All when the message The following file is a shared file but is not used by any other programs. Would you like to delete it? appears. The system will resume removing files.

    4. On the Uninstall Wizard Complete screen, click Finish .

    5. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now , and then click Finish .

  5. When Windows restarts, if the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  6. Delete LaserJet all-in-one folder and all of the contents.

    1. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Find , and then Files or Folders .

    2. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type “LaserJet All-in-one” (including quote marks).

    3. In the Look in box, there should be a C:\ with a checkmark in “Include subfolders”. Click Find Now .

    4. The LaserJet all-in-one folder should be located in the C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard folder. Highlight "LaserJet All-in-one", and click File , then Delete .

    5. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes .

  7. Delete all files in the temp folder on the computer.

    1. On the Find: All files screen, under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type in C:\Windows\temp , then click Find Now .

    2. When the files appear, click Edit then Select All (this will highlight all the files).

    3. Click File then Delete .

    4. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes .

  8. Delete MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file.

    1. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type Microsoftusbprint.inf , then click Find Now . (If the file is not displayed, verify that Folder Options in Windows Explorer is set to Show all files .)

    2. The MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file should be located in the C:\Windows\inf\other folder. If found, highlight Microsoftusbprint.inf and click File and Delete . If the MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file is not found, close the Find All Files screen.

    3. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes . Close the Find All Files screen.

  9. Remove USB Printing Support from Device Manager.

    1. From the Windows desktop, right-click My Computer , left-click Properties , then click the Device Manager tab.

    2. Click the + (plus) sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. If USB Printing Support is listed, select it and click Remove .

    3. If USB Printing Support is not listed, click Cancel .

  10. Empty the Recycle Bin on the computer.

    1. From the Windows 98 or Me desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin .

    2. On the Recycle Bin screen, click File and then Empty Recycle Bin .

    3. On the Confirm Files Delete screen, click Yes .

    4. Close the Recycle Bin .

Option 2: Use Add/Remove programs

  1. Leave the USB cable attached from the HP LaserJet 2200 series product to the computer.

  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Uninstall.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed, except for "Explorer" and "Systray".

  3. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Settings , Control Panel , then double-click Add/Remove Programs .

  4. Under the Install/Uninstall tab, click HP LaserJet 2200 Uninstaller .

  5. Click Add/Remove and follow the instructions in the Uninstall Wizard.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the uninstall process.

    2. On the Components screen, click Select All , then Next . The system should start removing files.

    3. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, click No to All when the message "The following file is a shared file but is not used by any other programs. Would you like to delete it?" appears. The system will resume removing files.

    4. On the Uninstall Wizard Complete screen, click Finish .

    5. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now , and click Finish .

    6. Close the Add/Remove and Control Panel windows.

  6. When Windows restarts, if the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  7. Delete LaserJet all-in-one folder and all contents of the folder.

    1. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Find , and then Files or Folders .

    2. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type LaserJet All-in-one (including quote marks).

    3. In the Look in box, there should be a C:\ with a checkmark in Include subfolders . Click Find Now .

    4. The LaserJet all-in-one folder should be located in the C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard folder. Highlight LaserJet All-in-one , and click File , then Delete .

  8. Delete all files in the temp folder on the computer.

    1. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in Named , type C:\Windows\temp , then click Find Now .

    2. When the files appear, click Edit then Select All (this will highlight all the files).

    3. Click File then Delete .

    4. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes .

  9. Delete MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file.

    1. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type Microsoftusbprint.inf , then click Find Now .

    2. The MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file should be located in the "C:\Windows\inf\other" folder. If found, highlight Microsoftusbprint.inf and click File and Delete . If the MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file is not found, close the Find All Files screen.

    3. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes . Close the Find All Files screen.

  10. Remove USB Printing Support from Device Manager.

    1. From the Windows desktop, right-click My Computer , left-click Properties , then click the Device Manager tab.

    2. Click the + (plus) sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. If USB Printing Support is listed, select it and click Remove .

    3. If USB Printing Support is not listed, click Cancel .

  11. Empty the Recycle Bin on the computer.

    1. From the Windows 98 or Me desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin icon.

    2. On the Recycle Bin screen, click File then Empty Recycle Bin .

    3. On the Confirm Files Delete screen, click Yes .

    4. Close the Recycle Bin .

  12. Proceed to the Reinstalling the software section for Windows 98 and Me operating systems.

Option 3: HP LaserJet 2200 Uninstaller is not available

  1. Leave the USB cable attached from the HP LaserJet 2200 series product to the computer.

  2. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Uninstall.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the CTRL + ALT + DELTE keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed, except for "Explorer" and "Systray."

  3. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Run , and then type C:\Program files\Hewlett-Packard\LaserJet All-in-one\Uninstall\2200\setup.exe . Click OK .

  4. Follow the instructions in the Uninstall Wizard.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the uninstall process.

    2. On the Components screen, click Select All ,then Next . The system should start removing files.

    3. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, click No to All when the message The following file is a shared file but is not used by any other programs. Would you like to delete it? appears. The system will resume removing files.

    4. On the Uninstall Wizard Complete screen, click Finish .

    5. On the Uninstall Wizard screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish .

    2. The MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file should be located in the C:\Windows\inf\other folder. If found, highlight Microsoftusbprint.inf and click File and Delete . If the MICROSOFTUSBPRINT.INF file is not found, close the Find All Files screen.

    3. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes . Close the Find All Files screen.

  9. Remove USB Printing Support from Device Manager.

    1. From the Windows desktop, right-click My Computer , left-click Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.

    2. Click the + (plus) sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. If USB Printing Support is listed, select it and click Remove .

    3. If USB Printing Support is not listed, click Cancel .

  10. Empty the Recycle Bin on the computer.

    1. From the Windows 98 or Me desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin icon.

    2. On the Recycle Bin screen, click File and Empty Recycle Bin .

    3. On the Confirm Delete Files screen, click Yes .

    4. Close the Recycle Bin .

  11. Proceed to the Reinstalling the software section for Windows 98 and Me operating systems.

Reinstalling the LaserJet 2200 printing software for Windows 98 and Me operating systems

  1. Verify that the USB cable is connected to the printer and that the printer is on.

  2. If the Add New Hardware Wizard screen appears, click Cancel .

  3. Close all applications and TSRs before running the Software Installation.

    1. To quit all open programs, simultaneously hold down the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys. This will bring up a Close Program window.

    2. Highlight one item and click End Task .

    3. Repeat this procedure until all programs are closed, except for Explorer and Systray .

  4. Find the HP LaserJet 2200 series CD-ROM that came in the box with the HP LaserJet 2200 series product and place it in the computer’s CD-ROM drive.

  5. When the autorun HP LaserJet 2200 Series CD Browser screen appears, click the Software Installation button. If the autorun HP LaserJet 1200 Series CD Browser screen does not appear after a few seconds, click Start and Run . In the Open field, type X:\setup.exe where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

  6. To install the HP LaserJet 2200 software and driver, follow the instructions on the screen.

    1. On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin the installation.

    2. On the HP Software License Agreement screen, click Yes .

    3. On the Type of Connection screen, Connect to this computer should be selected. Click Next to continue.

    4. On the Select a Port screen, USB should be selected. Click Next to continue.

    5. On the Model screen, click the model being set up. The HP LaserJet 2200 printer is highlighted and appears in the Description box by default. Click Next to continue.

    6. On the Type of Installation screen, make certain Typical Installation is selected, then click Next .

    7. The HP LaserJet 2200 Series Setup screen will appear and setup will begin.

    8. On the Finish screen, to check which components have been installed, click Installation Details . To deselect actions to perform when setup finished, click the checkmark to remove it. Click Finish to complete the installation.

    9. On the Restart Needed screen, Yes, I want to restart my computer now should be selected. Click OK .

  7. Remove the HP LaserJet 2200 series CD from the CD-ROM drive.

  8. After rebooting the Windows 98 or Me PC, the following should occur:

    • Plug and Play will begin and the New Hardware Found screen will appear. (At this time the Dot4, Dot4Print 1284.4 compatible printer, Dot4USB, and HP DOT4 USB device ports are installed.)

  9. On the Finishing Setup screen, click OK .

  10. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Settings , and Printers . If the HP LaserJet 2200 series PCL6 printer icon or listing appears, the software is completely installed. If the printer’s icon or listing does not appear, perform the following:

    1. Double-click Add Printer . The Add Printer Wizard screen should appear. Click Next .

    2. Select Local printer and click Next .

    3. Under Manufacturer , select HP ; and under Printers , select HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL6 , and click Next .

    4. Select Keep existing driver (recommended) and click Next .

    5. Under Available ports , select the Dot4_00x (x should be the highest number of DOT4 ports) and click Next .

    6. The printer name should read HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL6 . Under Do you want your Windows-based program to use this driver as the default printer? , select Yes (or No) and click Next .

    7. Under Would you like to print a test page? , select Yes and click Finish .

    8. The printer’s icon or printer's name should appear in the Printers screen.

    9. Under Did the test page print correctly , click Yes and close the Printers screen. Installation is complete.

    10. If the reinstall fails, go back to the above-listed Uninstall options and uninstall again; then proceed to the Removing file section below.

Removing files

NOTE: Remove these files only if the above reinstall was not successful in reinstalling the HP LaserJet 2200 series product software.

Below are several files that may cause problems when trying to reinstall. Manually remove each of the files below before attempting to reinstall.

  1. From the Windows desktop, click Start , Find , and Files or Folders .

  2. On the Find: All Files screen under the Name & Location tab, in the Named box, type the file name from the table below.

  3. In the Look in box, there should be a C:\ with a checkmark in Include subfolders .

  4. Click Find Now (files may or may not be found.) If found, select the file name. If a file is not found, close this screen.

  5. Click File , then Delete.

  6. On the Confirm Folder Delete screen, click Yes .

  7. Close the Find All Files screen.

  8. Repeat for the file name listed below.

  9. Empty the Recycle Bin on the computer.

    1. From the Windows 98 or Me desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin icon.

    2. On the Recycle Bin screen, click File and Empty Recycle Bin .

    3. On the Confirm Delete Files screen, click Yes .

    4. Close the Recycle Bin .

  10. Proceed to the Reinstalling the software section above for Windows 98 and Me operating systems.
