HP LaserJet 1200 Product Family - Cannot Install Print Software, Print, or Scan over the Network With Internet Connection Sharing Installed

ISSUE: An HP LaserJet 1220 cannot install the printer software, scan, or print over the network when ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is installed on one of the computers on the network.
SOLUTION: Check the following:
  1. Press the TEST button on the back of the HP Jetdirect to print an HP Jetdirect configuration page. Verify that all settings appear ready; the TCP/IP Status should read “Ready” and the IP address should be at the default of 192.0.0.192, or should be configured accordingly for the network. If not, try the following:

    1. Turn off the printer.

    2. Unplug the power from the HP Jetdirect.

    3. Turn on the printer.

    4. After the printer is on, plug in the power of the HP Jetdirect.

    5. Wait at least two minutes, then press the TEST button on the back of the HP Jetdirect to print an HP Jetdirect configuration page. Verify that all of the settings appear ready.

If the TCP/IP status always reads, "Initializing", check to see if any computers on the network have Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installed. If so, follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect any computer running ICS from the network, then unplug the power from the HP Jetdirect print server and plug it back in.

  2. Wait at least two minutes, then press the TEST button on the back of the HP Jetdirect to print a Jetdirect configuration page. The TCP/IP Status should read “Ready” and the IP address should be at the default of 192.0.0.192.

  3. The network cable must be attached for an HP Jetdirect 175X to detect a network; otherwise it will always read "Initializing." This status could indicate a bad network cable or hub.

If the HP Jetdirect is looking for a DHCP server to assign it an IP address, the ICS DHCP service may not successfully complete this task, and could leave the HP Jetdirect in an "Initializing" state. Once the computers are disconnected, the HP Jetdirect should reach its default IP address of 192.0.0.192 after a few minutes. At that point it can be configured with an IP address using Telnet, or the printer software can be installed and used to configure the HP Jetdirect.
