HP LaserJet 4000 and 4050 Series Printers - Error Messages 50.1 through 50.3, 50.5

Knowledgebase document number: BPL11833

Introduction

50.x errors on an HP LaserJet 4000 or 4050 series printer are related to a number of causes and have symptoms that are better defined by the number following the 50. For example, low fuser temperature (error 50.1 ), fuser warm up error (error 50.2 ), high fuser temperature (error 50.3 ), inconsistent fuser error (error 50.5).

Instructions

  1. If the printer is displaying the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE message on the control panel, then install the user installable Printer Maintenance kit, which includes a new fuser. A fuser near the end of its life can cause 50.x errors.

  2. Remove the printer from any UPS supplies, additional power supplies, or power strips.

  3. Unplug the printer for twenty minutes then power it back up again.

NOTE: Unplugging the printer allows it to discharge all power sources within the printer.
  4. Plug the printer into a wall outlet to check whether this resolves the problem. If the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, turn the printer off, unplugging it for at least twenty minutes, before turning it back on.

  5. If the issue is still unresolved, try another power source in the building independent of the one being used.

  6. If the issue is still unresolved, the line voltage and current source at the printer location might need to be inspected by a qualified electrician to ensure that it meets the printer’s electrical specifications.

  7. Remove and reseat the fuser.

NOTE: When removing the fuser, the plastic cover can come off with the fuser remaining in the printer.
NOTE: If the printer has been moved or bumped, a bad connection can occur between the fuser and the printer. Reseating the fuser can correct this issue.
  8. If the 50.x error continues, print a configuration page and replace the fuser if printer maintenance is due.

Printing a configuration page

To print a configuration page, perform the following steps.

  1. Press the MENU rocker key until INFORMATION MENU appears on the printer display.

  2. Press the ITEM rocker key until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears on the printer display.

  3. Press the SELECT button to print a configuration page.

    1. If printer maintenance is not due, and the 50.1 or 50.2 error reoccurs after power-cycling the printer or when trying to print, try installing a known good fuser from another HP LaserJet 4100 series printer, if available.

    2. If 50.x errors persist after properly installing a known good fuser, or if the errors follow the questionable fuser (provided it is not near the end of its estimated life expectancy), contact HP for further assistance.

Reseating and replacement instructions for the fuser

Instructions for removing and replacing the Fusing Assembly
Rear Cover/Rear Output Bin
1 - Location of Right Hinge
2 - Location of Left Hinge

Rotate the Bin upward and slide it to the right to release the left hinge (Refer to Figure 1, call-out 2).
Left and Right Duplex Connector Covers
WARNING: Let the Fuser Assembly cool before disassembly.
If a Duplexer is installed, remove it. If a Duplexer is not installed, remove the Left and Right Duplex Access Covers from the rear of the printer by pulling each from the bottom. (Refer to Figure 2)
Captive Screws in the Fuser Assembly
Loosen the two captive screws on the Fuser Assembly. (Refer to Figure 3)

Contact HP?

If the issue is unresolved, contact HP support and provide the following information:

Document number: BPL11833 was used for troubleshooting.

Problem Description: (Provide the applicable questions and answers)

  • When did the errors begin? Had something changed when this started occurring?

  • If the 50.x error is still unresolved, what is the exact 50.x error message being displayed on the printer control panel?

  • If the 50.x error is still unresolved, was there a paper jam prior to the error condition?

  • Did the errors follow the questionable fuser? If so, which errors? (List all that display on the printer control panel.)

  • Do the errors persist in the printer in question after properly installing a known good fuser? If so, which errors? (List all that display on the printer control panel.)
