HP LaserJet 1005 Series Printer - Software Installation for Windows (R) 98 and Me

Introduction

The software for the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer is shipped on a compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM). The Setup program installs the product software from the CD-ROM onto the hard disk and updates Windows files. This document explains how to install the software for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

Minimum system requirements

Computer specifications

All of the computers that use the printer must meet the following minimum requirements.

  • IBM-compatible computer with an available universal serial bus (USB) or parallel port

  • Windows 98: Pentium (R) 90 MHz processor or better and 32 MB or more of RAM

  • Windows Me: Pentium (R) 150 MHz processor or better and 32 MB or more of RAM

Parallel cable specifications

IEEE 1284 A to B compliant parallel printer cable up to 3 meters (10 feet).

NOTE: The HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer must be connected directly to the computer. If the parallel port has another device attached to it, such as a switchbox, external storage device, Zip drive, or other device, either disconnect the device or install an additional parallel port in the computer.

USB cable specifications

A USB 2.0 cable up to 2 meters (6.6 feet), backward compatible to USB 1.1

Installation instructions for direct connection

Follow these steps to install the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software for a direct connection to the printer.

NOTE: HP recommends installing the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software before connecting the cable to the computer.

Connect the cable to the computer only when prompted to do so by the installation software.

  1. Quit all programs.

  2. Place the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

  3. Wait for autorun to begin the software installation.

    NOTE: If the autorun program does not start, click Start , click Run , and then type "X:\SETUP" (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive), or click Browse to find the file on the CD-ROM. If a plug-and-play message appears, cancel it.
  4. Read the information on the Welcome screen, and then click Next .

  5. Read the licensing agreement, and then click Yes .

  6. Click Next to install the software to the default folder, or click Browse to choose a new destination folder.

  7. Click Next to accept the default folder name, or type a new folder name in the field.

  8. Click Next to accept the current installation settings.

  9. For USB connections, connect the cable to the computer when prompted.

  10. Wait for the plug-and-play messages to complete.

  11. Click Next to allow the installation program to find the printer connected to the computer.

  12. Check boxes on the screen permit registering the printer online and printing a test page. Each check box is selected by default. Accept one or both of these settings, and then click Finish .

    1. If the option to register the printer online is chosen, the browser starts and displays the online registration screen at http://www.hp.com. Follow the directions on the screen to register the printer.

    2. After registration is complete or if the option to register the printer online was not chosen, a dialog box appears that describes the benefits of registering the printer. Click OK to finish.

    3. If the option to print a test page was chosen, a dialog box appears that asks if the test page printed correctly. Click Yes to close the dialog box and finish the installation, or click No to launch the Windows print-troubleshooting tool.

Set up the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer for Windows-sharing

This section contains instructions for using Windows-sharing to make the printer available to other users on a network.

Using Windows-sharing, the person using the computer directly connected to the printer can allow other users on the network to print to it. The computer directly connected to the printer must first have the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software installed. Then, use the following procedures to enable sharing:

NOTE: Once the printer is shared, the printer driver must be installed on all the computers on the network that will be printing to the printer.

Windows 98 procedure

At the computer directly connected to the printer:

  1. Click Start , select Settings , and then click Control Panel .

  2. Double-click Network .

  3. Click File and Print Sharing .

  4. Select the I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer check box, and then click OK . (Setup might prompt for the Windows setup CD-ROM.)

  5. Click OK to exit the Network dialog box.

  6. When prompted, click Yes to restart the computer.

  7. Once the computer has restarted, click Start , select Settings , and then click Printers .

  8. Right-click the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer icon, and then click Sharing .

  9. On the Sharing tab, click the Shared as option button (also known as a radio button), and then type a name for the printer in the adjacent text field.

  10. Click OK .

Windows Me procedure

At the computer directly connected to the printer:

  1. Click Start , select Settings , and then click Control Panel .

  2. Double-click Network .

  3. Click File and Print Sharing .

  4. Select the I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer check box, and then click OK . (Setup might prompt for the Windows setup CD-ROM.)

  5. Click OK to exit the Network dialog box.

  6. When prompted to do so, click Yes to restart the computer.

  7. Once the computer has restarted, click Start , select Settings , and then click Printers .

  8. Right-click the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer icon, and then click Sharing .

  9. On the Sharing tab, select the Shared as option button, and then type a name for the printer in the adjacent field.

  10. Add a comment to the Comment field, if desired.

  11. Add a password to the Password field, if desired. This password is required of any user who attempts to use the printer.

  12. Click OK to finish.

Installation instructions for networked computers

Follow the steps in this section to install the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software on a computer that gains access to the printer over a network using Windows-sharing.

The HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software must be installed to use a shared HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer. To install software on a networked computer, the computer must be running Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT (R) 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. All computers with the software installed can use all of the printer features available over the network.

NOTE: Before using the following instructions to install the printer software on a network computer, first verify that the following conditions have been met:

- The HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer has been installed using a direct connection on the host computer. Click here for more information under “Installation instructions for a direct connection” above.

- Windows sharing has been enabled on the host computer. Click here for more information under "Set up the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer for Windows-sharing” above.

Windows 98 and Windows Me procedure

  1. Quit all programs.

  2. Click Start , select Settings , and then select Printers .

  3. Double-click the Add Printer icon.

  4. In the Add-Printer wizard, click Next .

  5. Select Network printer , and click Next .

  6. Type the network share name in Network path or queue name (for example, \\COMPUTER_NAME\PRINTER_SHARE_NAME).

    NOTE: The COMPUTER_NAME should be the name of the host computer. The PRINTER_SHARE_NAME should be the name that was assigned to the printer when Windows-sharing was enabled on the host computer.   7. Click Next .

  8. Click Have Disk .

  9. Insert the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer software CD-ROM into the computer CD-ROM drive. If the autorun installation program begins, click Cancel .

  10. Click Browse .

  11. In the Open dialog box, select the CD-ROM drive, click the language group, select the HPLJ1005.INF file, and then click Open .

  12. Click OK to install from disk.

  13. Select the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer driver from the list, and then click Next .

  14. To change the default printer name, type the new printer name in the Printer name text box.

  15. Click Yes to have the HP LaserJet 1005 Series printer become the default printer or click No to keep the existing default printer, and then click Next .

  16. Click Yes , and then click Finish . A test page prints verifying that the printer is set up properly.

  17. If the test page printed correctly, click Yes . If not, click No to start the Windows 98 or Windows Me print-troubleshooting tool.
