HP LaserJet PostScript(R) Series Printers - Cannot Access Configuration Option Settings in PageMaker v 5.0, 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0
ISSUE: When printing from PageMaker v 5.0, 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0 with a PostScript(R) printer driver, legal-sized paper (or possibly other sizes) cannot be selected, or the correct paper tray selections cannot be accessed from the File then Print menu options. After loading the proper PPD into the PageMaker directory any additional paper trays, duplexer and hard disk must be added under the Features tab. After adding them here, they will be accessible when using the File then Print command and selecting the proper PPD from within PageMaker. See Figures 3 and 4.
NOTE: Resident Windows 95 PostScript drivers use SPD files rather than PPD files. Some Windows 3.1x drivers use WPD files rather than PPD files. SPDs and WPDs are not supported in any version of PageMaker and must be converted to PPD files in order to perform the solution detailed below. This may be done by simply renaming the file from *.spd or *.wpd to *.ppd. For further information concerning SPD and WPD files, contact Microsoft(R).
SOLUTION: The appropriate PPD file needs to be copied into the PageMaker directory. These will be found on the system if the appropriate printer driver has already been installed. The PPD files are found in the Windows/System directory. If needed use the Search function (Start , Search , then For Files or Folders ) to locate any PPD files located on the system.
Placing the PPD into the appropriate directory
After copying the PPD file to the PageMaker directory, open PageMaker . Select File/Page Setup (v 5.0) or File/Document Setup (v 6.0 and 6.5) and verify that the Compose to selection shows the correct printer. Then select File/Print and verify that the Print to and Type selections (v 5.0) or the Print to and PPD selections (v 6.0 and 6.5) show the correct printer. In PageMaker v7.0 go into Features after selecting File then Print and add the specific options so they can be used when printing, see Figure 3 and 4.
CAUSE: PageMaker does not access the PPD files that are installed in the Windows\System directory by the Adobe(R) Windows PostScript driver. Instead, PageMaker defaults to its own PPD files. By copying the Adobe driver PPD files to PageMaker’s PPD directory, PageMaker can now locate and use the PPD files specific to HP PostScript printers, this will allow the correct tray selections to be made.
NOTE: Microsoft/Adobe PostScript drivers (v 4.00) for Windows 95 use .SPD (Simplified Printer Description) files. The Microsoft Windows v 3.0 and 3.1 environments use WPD (Windows Printer Description) files. These files are added to the Windows\System directory.
Examples of driver settings available after installing the PPD file
When using a PCL driver simply selecting setup will take you into the driver screens to make your selections, see Figure 1.

When using a Postscript driver ensure the proper PPD is chosen in the print window, see Figure 2.
NOTE: Be sure to select the proper PPD in the PPD dropdown shown in Figure 2. The printer options available under the Features tab will vary according to the PPD selected.
