Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet 900 Printer Series

Blinking lights

The lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. Blinking lights can indicate error conditions. They might also indicate that the product is starting up or processing a print job.

Following are the different lights and buttons on the product control panel.

The following sections describe the most common issues related to the light patterns on your product. Find the issue related to the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are off

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Off

  • Cause

    The product is turned off.

Solutions

Use the following solutions to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Turn on the printer

Press the Power button () to turn the product on.

If the product does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the printer is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the product and to the electrical outlet.

  1. Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power adapter is securely connected to the product.

  2. Check the power adapter to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

  3. Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

  4. Press the Power button () to turn the product on.

  5. If the product does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power light is on

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The product is ready to process a print job.

Solution

No action is necessary, as the product is ready to process a print job.

Issue: The Power light blinks

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    The product is printing, or there might be a software issue.

Issue: The Power light and the Resume light are on

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: On

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The rear access door or the duplexer is missing or unlocked.

Solution

Use one of the following methods to reattach either the rear access door or the duplexer. If you have a duplexer on your product, you will not have a rear access door.

Method one: Reattach the rear access door

  1. Turn the knob on the rear access door counter-clockwise to release it.

  2. Pull the door toward you to remove it.

  3. Reattach the rear access door to the rear of the product.

  4. Turn the knob clockwise to lock the door into place.

Method two: Reattach the duplexer

  1. Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer to release it.

  2. Remove the duplexer from the product.

  3. Reattach the duplexer. Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer, and then gently push the duplexer back into the rear of the product until it snaps firmly into place.

  4. Repeat the steps to reattach the duplexer if the lights remain on.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Resume light blinks

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    There are several possible causes:

    • The cover on the product is open.

    • The product is out of paper.

    • There is a paper jam.

    • The carriage is stuck.

How do I resolve this issue? The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue, find the message that displays on your computer (from the following choices), and then expand that section for solutions.

Issue: The Power light and the Resume light blink alternately

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    If the paper will not feed, there might be a paper jam.

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Off

  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    The carriage might be stuck.

Issue: The Power light and the Cartridge light are on

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: On

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    The product needs to be reset.

Solution

Follow these steps to reset the product.

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

The Power light, the Resume light and the Cartridge lights blink alternately

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Blinking

  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Power light: Blinking

  • Cause

    The product needs to be restarted.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Cartridge light blinks

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

  • Cartridge light: Blinking

  • Resume light: Off

  • Power light: On

  • Cause

    There is a problem with one or both cartridges.

How do I resolve this issue? The following sections include solutions to resolve the cartridge issue. Determine the issue, based on the icon the yellow arrow points to, and then expand that section for solutions.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin, make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your product.

To purchase cartridges or check cartridge compatibility for your printer, go to HP Home & Home Office Store (US only), and then click Ink Toner & Paper.

If you are located outside of the US, follow these steps to purchase cartridges using HP SureSupply.

  1. Go to HP SureSupply .

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country/region location is correct.

Genuine HP cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.

Which cartridges you use might depend on your country/region. Follow these steps to purchase cartridges or check cartridge compatibility for your printer using HP SureSupply.

  1. Go to HP SureSupply .

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country/region location is correct.

NOTE: For the United States only, go to the HP Home & Home Office Store .

Genuine HP cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.

Cause: There is a problem with the tri-color cartridge.

Solutions

Follow each solution in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Remove and then reinsert the problem cartridge

Follow these steps to remove and reinsert the tri-color cartridge to make sure that it is seated correctly.

Step one: Remove the cartridge

Follow these steps to remove the tri-color cartridge.

NOTE: The tri-color cartridge is located in the left carriage slot.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cover on the product.

  3. Open the cartridge latch, and then slide the cartridge out of its slot.

Step two: Reinsert the cartridge

Follow these steps to reinsert the tri-color cartridge.

  1. Hold the cartridge with the HP logo facing up.

  2. Slide the cartridge into its slot, and then press it toward the back of the product until it locks into place.

  3. Close the cartridge latch.

  4. Close the cover on the product.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the tri-color cartridge, and then align the cartridges.

Step one: Replace the cartridge
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cover on the product, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

  3. Open the cartridge latch and then slide the cartridge out of its slot.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then carefully remove the protective tape.

    NOTE: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Slide the cartridge into its slot, and then press it toward the back of the product until it locks into place.

  6. Close the cartridge latch.

  7. Close the cover on the product.

Step two: Align the cartridges

Follow these steps to align the cartridges.

  • Windows XP:

    1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

    2. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    3. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

  • Windows Vista:

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Printers.

    3. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    4. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

Cause: There is a problem with the black cartridge.

Solutions

Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Remove and then reinsert the black cartridge

Follow these steps to remove and reinsert the black cartridge to make sure that it is seated correctly.

NOTE: The black cartridge is located in the right carriage slot.
Step one: Remove the cartridge

  3. Open the cartridge latch, and then slide the cartridge out of its slot.

Step two: Reinsert the cartridge

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the black cartridge, and then align the cartridges.

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cover on the product, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then carefully remove the protective tape.

Step two: Align the cartridges

  • Windows XP:

    1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

    2. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    3. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

  • Windows Vista:

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Printers.

    3. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    4. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

Cause: The tri-color cartridge is low on ink.

Solution

Follow these steps to replace the tri-color cartridge, and then align the cartridges.

NOTE: The tri-color cartridge is located in the left carriage slot.

  2. Open the cover on the product, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

  6. Close the cartridge latch.

  7. Close the cover on the product.

Step two: Align the cartridges

Cause: The black cartridge is low on ink.

Solution

Follow these steps to replace the black cartridge, and then align the cartridges.

NOTE: The black cartridge is located in the right carriage slot.
Step one: Replace the cartridge
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. Open the cover on the product, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Step two: Align the cartridges

    1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

    2. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    3. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

  • Windows Vista:

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Printers.

    3. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.

    4. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

Service the printer
