How to fix blinking lights

Printer lights blink in certain patterns to tell you about specific problems.

Read this document until you see the pattern that your lights are making. The solution follows each pattern.

NOTE: There may be more than one reason why the printer lights are blinking, so you may see several solutions.

Problem
The POWER light is off and the printer is not working.
Solution
Make sure the printer is connected to a power source that is working.
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting to the power source, or try a different power source.

  • If connected to a surge protector or power strip, make sure the POWER switch is in the ON position.

  • Check circuit breakers to make sure the power source is working.

If these solutions did not fix the problem, have the printer serviced.

Problem
The POWER light stays on and the other lights are off.
Solution
The printer is ready to receive a print job. Choose the print command from the software application that you are using.

Problem
The printer will not print.
Solution
1. Turn the printer off.
2. Turn the printer on.
3. If the printer will not turn off follow the steps below:
  • Disconnect the power cord and the parallel printer cable from the printer.

  • Wait about 10 seconds.

  • Reconnect the power cord and the parallel printer cable to the back of the printer.

4. Turn on the printer.

Problem
The top cover of the printer is open or the printer is not responding.
Solution
1. Close the top cover.
2. Press the RESUME button.
Problem
The printer detects a faulty, incompatible, or improperly installed print cartridge.
Solution
1. Open the top cover of the printer.
2. Make sure the correct print cartridges are installed.
3. Replace or reinstall the print cartridges.
4. Close the top cover of the printer.
Problem
The print cartridge contacts are dirty and the printer cannot detect a print cartridge.
Solution
Clean the contact points on the cartridges with a dry, lint-free cloth.
1. Open the top cover of the printer.
2. Remove the print cartridges.
3. Clean the copper-colored contact points on the cartridges with a dry, lint-free cloth.
NOTE: Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the silver-colored nozzle plate on the bottom of the cartridge.
4. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove moisture from the contacts.
5. Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
6. Close the top cover.
7. Try printing again.

Problem
The printer does not detect any paper in the paper tray.
Solution
1. Load paper in the paper tray.
2. Press the RESUME button.
Problem
The printer can detect that paper is in the paper tray; but will not print.
Solution
1. Press the RESUME button to feed the paper. If the paper does not feed, continue with the following steps.
2. Turn the printer off.
3. Open the top cover of the printer.
4. Make sure that paper is not jammed in the printer.
5. Make sure that nothing is stuck under the paper sensor. (Remove any dust under the sensor by blowing gently.)
6. Close the top cover of the printer.
7. Turn the printer on.
8. Try printing again.
If these solutions did not fix the problem, have the printer serviced.

Problem
Paper is jammed in the printer.
Solution

Problem
The printer is not receiving the print job (information) from the computer.
Solution
Check that the correct printer model is selected in the software application you are using.
If this does not solve the problem, continue with the following steps:
1. Turn the printer off.
2. Disconnect the parallel printer cable from the printer.
3. Turn the printer on.
4. Hold down the POWER button and press the RESUME button four times. If the printer prints, then the printer is working correctly.
5. Reconnect the printer cable to the printer.
6. Send another print job to the printer. If the printer does not print, follow the steps below:
  • Disconnect the parallel printer cable from the printer.

  • Connect a different parallel printer cable to the printer.

Problem
The print cartridge carriage is stuck.
Solution
1. Open the top of the printer.
2. Remove anything that is blocking the print cartridge carriage path.
3. Turn the printer off.
4. Turn the printer on.
