HP LaserJet 1300 Series Printers - First Time or Initial Software Installation for Microsoft Windows XP on a USB Port
The HP LaserJet 1300 product software is shipped on CD-ROM. On Windows systems, the Setup program installs the HP LaserJet 1300 product software from the CD-ROM onto the hard disk and updates Windows files. This document explains how to install the software for Microsoft Windows XP USB installation.
If the CD-ROM is lost after opening the package, the software can be downloaded from the HP Web site.

at http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html. Select the download Drivers and Software information radio button, type the printer name or model number in the text box, and then press ENTER
. Select the appropriate operating system to locate the drivers available for download for this product. Additionally, this Web site will provide instructions for purchasing a new CD-ROM for the product where available.
- Windows XP operating system
- Pentium 300 MHz processor or faster
- Minimum 64 MB of RAM
- 140 MB or more free hard disk space available on the same partition as the operating system
- Minimum USB 1.1 port (limited functionality) or a backwards compatible USB 2.0 full-speed compliant port
- A 2x or above CD-ROM drive (required for installation)
- TCP/IP protocol installed
The HP LaserJet 1300 series printer requires a USB, version 2.0 full speed cable.
NOTE: Note the model number of the printer on the front of the printer before starting the installation.
CAUTION: Do not connect the printer cable to the computer until prompted to do so. Attaching the printer to the computer before starting the software installation, may cause errors during the printer setup process. If the hardware is installed first on a Windows XP system using a USB connection, it is recommended that the default settings that appear in the New Hardware wizard are accepted for correct installation.
- Verify that the USB cable is not connected to the computer.
- Close all applications and TSRs before running the software install.
Simultaneously press and release the Ctrl
keys on the keyboard to open the Windows security window.
Click Task Manager
and then click the Applications
Highlight one item and click End Task
- Repeat this procedure until all items are closed.
Place the software CD-ROM that came with the printer into the computer CD-ROM drive. If the New Hardware Found message appears on the screen, click Cancel
. Follow the on-screen installation instructions. If the Welcome screen does not automatically open, select Start
from the Windows desktop and type Z:\hpsetup
(where Z is the CD drive letter), and then click OK
Read the information on the Welcome screen, and then click Install Printer
. The Welcome screen provides five options:
- Install printer: Starts the installation process and opens the setup wizard.
- Customization utility: Starts the optimization utility.
- Register product: Registers the HP LaserJet 1300 printer software.
- View documentation: Permits the HP LaserJet 1300 documentation to be viewed.
- Support: Provides an option to access HP online support and order supplies online.
Read the licensing agreement, and then click Next
Select the Connected directly to this computer
Printer Connection method and then click Next
Select the USB
connector type and the appropriate port from the drop-down list, and then click Next
Select the appropriate printer model from the list, and then click Next
NOTE: Verify that the correct printer model is connected before continuing.
Select Typical Installation
, and then click Next
Accept the default printer name or type a new name , and then click Next
Select the appropriate shared printer option, click Next
In the text box, type the location and comment (optional), and then click Next
to install the software.
- Connect the printer to the computer.
On-screen check boxes permit the user to print a driver test page, read release note, check for Web updates, and register the printer online. The Print a driver test page
check box is selected by default. You can accept one or all of these settings, and then click Finish
. The following options are available:
To print a test page, a dialog box asks if the test page printed correctly. Click Yes
to close the dialog box and finish the installation, or click Troubleshoot
to launch the Windows print-troubleshooting tool.
If you chose to read release notes, select the Read release notes
To check for Web updates, select the Check for Web updates
If you chose to register the printer online, your browser launches and displays the online registration screen at http://www.hp.com. Follow the onscreen directions to register the printer. Once the registration is completed or if you did not chose to register the product online, a dialog box that describes the benefits of registering the printer appears, click OK
The computer must be restarted before the configuration changes made to the HP LaserJet 1300 series printer will take affect. Click Yes
to restart now, or click No
to restart later.
