HP Color LaserJet 2500 Series Printers - "Service Display Name in Use" Error or Product Not Functional When Some HP Photosmart or Officejet Printers Are Installed on the Same PC

Conflicts can occur when the HP Color LaserJet 2500 series printer and an HP Photosmart and/or HP Officejet printer are installed on the same computer. HP Color LaserJet 2500 products use similar drivers as some HP Photosmart and HP Officejet printers. Typically, users with systems running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows 98 and Me operating on a USB connection, will experience one of the following conditions:
  • A "Service display name already in use" error
  • A print job will print to both printers when only one product is selected
Products installed on a single parallel port may experience additional issues. The following are the HP Photosmart products that may have conflict issues with the HP Color LaserJet 2500 series product:
  • HP Photosmart P1000
  • HP Photosmart P1100 series
  • HP Photosmart 1215 series
  • HP Photosmart 1218 series
  • HP Officejet G series
  • HP Officejet K series

The HP Color LaserJet 2500 series product should be installed before the Photosmart product to resolve conflict issues. If the HP Photosmart or Officejet printer was installed first, uninstall the product, install the HP Color LaserJet 2500 series product, and then reinstall the HP Photosmart printer. Click here to go to the Microsoft Windows 2000 solution or click here to go to the Microsoft Windows 98 and Me solution .

Follow the procedure below if the HP all-in-one is the second device to be installed. If the HP Photosmart printer is the second device to be installed, follow this link to BPY20626 to learn how to install the HP Photosmart printer . If the issue is between two HP all-in-one installations in Windows 2000, please follow this link to BPU03102 . Contact HP Customer Care for assistance performing the steps if necessary. HP Officejet G series owners must perform these steps from the CD-ROM. If the CD-ROM software is not the most current version (2.43 should be printed near the bottom), please order the latest version from HP Software Distribution. Use this link to go to the driver ordering Web site.

Steps prior to performing the solution

  1. If the HP all-in-one software has been installed, run the HP Uninstaller Utility even if it has been uninstalled already.

    • HP Officejet G series owners should download and run the Uninstaller Utility program from the HP Web site. Follow the instructions on the download page to download and run the uninstaller. Click here to locate the Web page to find the uninstaller. This will remove the HP all-in-one software from the system.

    • HP Officejet K and V series owners and HP PSC 750 series owners will run the file by opening the Uninstall folder on the product CD-ROM. They should do the following with the product CD-ROM installed.

    1. Click Start , then Run from the Windows desktop.

    2. Click the Browse button and navigate to the Uninstall folder on the CDROM drive.

    3. Double-click Force_uni and then click OK . Follow the instruction to complete the forced uninstall.

  2. Disconnect the HP all-in-one from the computer and then reboot the computer when the forced uninstaller is finished. Do not reconnect the all-in-one to the PC until instructed to do so during the software installation.

  3. Double-click My Computer , then highlight the Local disk entries to determine if enough space is available. Approximately 500 MB of disk space should be free to perform the solutions if the CD-ROM is being used for the installation. The Internet driver download requires that 100 MB must be free. If sufficient space is available, proceed to the solutions. To free up disk space, follow the steps below.

  4. If insufficient disk space is available it may be necessary to free up hard disk space. Windows 98, Me, and 2000 users can run Disk Cleanup by clicking Start , Programs , Accessories , System Tools , then Disk Cleanup from the Windows desktop. It may be necessary to select a drive letter if multiple disk drives are installed in the computer. Disk Cleanup will calculate how much space can be gained. Be sure that Temporary Internet Files , Recycle bin , and Temporary Files are selected, and then click OK . Microsoft Windows 2000 users can opt to compress files that are not used often to gain the required space if necessary. Remove unused programs if sufficient hard disk space is still not available.

  5. Close all programs, right-click the Windows Desktop, select New , and then Folder . Name the new folder All-in-One .

  6. Copy the software to the folder just created.

    • Perform the steps below if the software CD-ROM will be used to install the software. If a newer version of the all-in-one software was downloaded from the Internet, use the steps in Step 6.

    1. Place the all-in-one software CD-ROM into the computer and select Quit when the HP all-in-one software installer appears.

    2. Right-click Start , and then Explore to open Windows Explorer.

    3. Highlight the CD-ROM drive letter that the HP all-in-one software CD-ROM was inserted into. The HP all-in-one software files and folders should appear in the right portion of the Window.

    4. Choose Edit , Select All to highlight all of these files.

    5. For Windows 2000, select Edit , Copy to Folder for Windows 2000. When the Browse to Folder window appears select the folder created in Step 5, then click OK . When using other versions of Windows, select Copy , navigate to the desktop folder, and then select Paste to copy the files. The contents of the CD-ROM will be copied to the folder on the Windows Desktop. Close Windows Explorer when the files have been copied.

    • Perform these steps if the software to be installed was downloaded from the Internet (This is not an option for HP Officejet G series owners).

    1. Click Start , Run from the Windows desktop.

    2. Click the Browse button, and navigate to the file location that the software was downloaded to. If necessary, return to the driver download page to get the name of the file and then search for it on the hard drive.

    3. Double-click the downloaded file to start the extraction process.

    4. A screen will appear requesting a location to save the files. Select the Change option.

    5. When the Browse to Folder window appears, select the folder created in Step 5, and then click OK . The driver files will be copied to the folder on the Windows Desktop. Select Quit when the installation screen appears and close all open programs.
