HP Color LaserJet 3500 Series Printer - First Time Setup and Installation

Introduction

This document is intended to help the user get started with the new HP Color LaserJet 3500 series printer. This document provides information about printer configurations, package contents, and setting up the hardware and software for both PC and Mac.

Printer configurations

Two configurations are available, the HP Color LaserJet 3500 and HP Color LaserJet 3500n series printers.

The HP Color LaserJet 3500 series printer is the base model and includes 64 MB of SDRAM.

The HP Color LaserJet 3500n series printer includes the features of the HP Color LaserJet 3500 series printer, plus an HP Jetdirect en3700 external print server.

Preparing the location and environment

It is necessary to prepare the location for the printer. Select a sturdy, level surface in a well ventilated, dust-free area. Make sure there is enough space around the printer so that the air vents on the left side and rear of the printer are not blocked.

The following are the measurements for the HP Color LaserJet 3500 series printer:

  • Height : 467 mm (18.4 inches)

  • Depth : 447 mm (17.6 inches)

  • Width : 483 mm (19 inches)

Additionally it is necessary to regulate the printer's environment. Do not place the printer in direct sunlight or an area that has abrupt temperature and humidity changes. Recommended ranges:
  • Temperature : 17° Celsius (C) to 25° C (62.6° Fahrenheit (F) to 77° F)

  • Humidity : 20÷ to 60÷ relative humidity

Setting up the printer

Follow the below instructions to set up the printer:

  1. Place the printer in a prepared location.

    WARNING: Two people must lift and move the printer to the prepared location. Do not lift the printer by the Tray 2 handle.
  2. Locate the printer's parts:

  3. Remove the packing materials from the printer:

    1. Remove all external orange tape, orange protectors, and other packaging material.

    2. Open Tray 2, and remove the orange shipping lock inside the tray.

    3. Open the lower rear door.

    4. Make sure that the two green pressure release lever actuators are in the upright position.

    5. Close the lower rear door.
      NOTE: The two release levers are located on the left and right side of the lower rear door.
    6. Lift the front door handle, and pull down the front door.

    7. Remove the orange tape and orange shipping locks on the rear, left and right sides of the transfer unit.

      CAUTION: Do not place anything on the transfer unit. Do not touch the top of the transfer unit or the contacts on the left side of the transfer unit.

    8. Remove any remaining orange tape from the printer.

  4. Install the print cartridge.

    2. Grasp both sides of the cartridge and distribute the toner by gently rocking the cartridge from side to side.

    3. Remove and discard the orange shipping tape and shipping locks from the new print cartridge.
      NOTE: Discard the shipping tape and shipping locks according to local regulations.

    4. Locate the color slot for the print cartridge.

    5. Align the print cartridge with the tracks inside the printer and, using the light blue handle, insert the cartridge.

    6. Repeat this procedure for the remaining three print cartridges.

    7. Firmly close the front door.

  5. Load paper into tray 2:

    1. Pull tray 2 out of the printer.

    2. Move the side width guides until the blue arrows on the width guides point to the size of paper being loaded.

    3. On the back of the tray, press the blue ridges and slide the length guides until the arrow symbol points to the paper size being loaded.

    4. Load the paper into the tray. If this is special paper, such as letterhead, load it with the side to be printed down and the top edge toward the front of the tray.
      NOTE: Do not fan the paper before loading.

    5. Push down on the stack of paper to lock the metal lift plate into place. Make sure that the stack of paper is flat and that the paper is below the height tabs.

    6. Slide the tray back into the printer.

  6. Load paper into Tray 1 (optional procedure):

    1. Open Tray 1.
      NOTE: If printing special media, such as envelopes, use Tray 1.

    2. Slide out the tray extender and, if necessary, open the additional tray extender.

    3. Slide the width guides slightly wider than the print media.

    4. Remove any unused print media, and close the tray when finished printing.

  7. Connect the power cable and turn the printer on. After a minimum of two minutes, the green ready light turns on.
    CAUTION: Do not connect the printer to the computer or to the network at this time.

  8. Print a demo page:

    1. Press MENU to enter the menus.

    2. Press (Down arrow) to highlight INFORMATION , and then press (Select) to select it.

    3. Press (Down arrow) to highlight PRINT DEMO , and then press (Select) to select it.

    After printing the demo page, the printer control panel displays the READY message.

Connecting to a PC and setting up printer software

Follow the below instructions to connect the printer to a PC and to set up the printer software:

Software first installation

  1. Place the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
    NOTE: Install the software from the CD-ROM before connecting the cable to the printer. If you have already connected the cable and the New Hardware Found message appears, go to step 17.
  2. On the Welcome screen, click Install Printer . The Setup Wizard appears.
    NOTE: If the Welcome screen does not appear, click Start , and then click Run . Type X:SETUP , replace X with the CD-ROM drive letter, and then click OK .
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, connect a USB cable (recommended to optimize performance) between the printer and the computer.

  4. Click Finish . If prompted, restart the PC.

  5. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

Hardware first installation

Follow the below instruction if connecting the hardware to the PC before installing the software (Plug and Play).

  1. Connect the USB cable to the printer and then to the PC

  2. If the New Hardware Found message appears, insert the CD-ROM.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions and accept the default selections.

  4. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

Connecting to a Mac and setting up printer software

Follow the below instructions to connect the printer to a Mac and to set up the printer software:
  1. Connect a USB cable between the USB port on the printer and the USB port on the computer.

  2. Place the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

    For Mac OS 9.1 to 9.2x, follow the below instructions.

    1. Run the Installer. Complete a custom install.

    2. For the custom install, select all options, including USB Components (Classic) .

    3. When prompted, restart the computer.

    4. Run the Apple Desktop Printer Utility by clicking HD , then Applications , and then Utilities .

    5. Double-click HP Printer (USB) , and then click OK .

    6. Next to USB Printer Selection , click Change .

    7. Select the printer, and then click OK .

    8. Save the printer setup.

    9. On the desktop, highlight the printer.

    10. Click the Printing menu, and then click Set Default Printer .

    For OS X, follow the below instructions.

    1. Run the Installer. Complete an easy install.
      NOTE: If Mac OS X and OS 9.1 (Classic) to 9.2x (Classic) are installed on the same computer, the installer will show both the Classic and the OS X installation options.
    2. Click HD , then Applications , and then Utilities .

    3. From Utilities click Print Center and then start the Print Center.

    4. If the printer appears in the Printer List , delete the printer. Click Add .

    5. On the next page, click the drop-down menu, and then click USB .

    6. From the Printer Model drop-down list, click HP .

    7. Under Model Name , select the printer, and then click Add .

  3. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

Connecting to the network (HP Color LaserJet 3500n series printer only)

Follow the below instructions to set up the HP Jetdirect en3700 and connect the HP Color LaserJet 3500n series printer.

  1. Attach the HP Jetdirect en3700 external print server to a 10Base-T or to a 100Base-T local network by plugging the network cable into the network port on the rear panel.

  2. Attach the print server to the printer using the USB cable.

  3. Insert the DC power cord from the power module into the power connector on the rear panel, and then insert into a power outlet.

  4. The 10 or the 100 LED turns on, indicating a network connection, and the power/status LED blinks. After 15 seconds, the power/status LED light and the USB printer LED light appear green. The power/ status LED will blink if there is network activity.

  5. Press the Test button on the back of the external print server to print an HP Jetdirect configuration page.

  6. Note the IP address for reference.

  7. Install the network printer software, see the following two sections for installation instructions on a PC and Mac.

Installing network printer software on PC

Follow the below instructions to install the printer software for a Windows PC:

  1. Place the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  3. Click Finish . If prompted, restart the computer.

  4. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

Installing network printer software on Mac

Installing network printer software for Mac OS 9.1 to 9.2x

  1. Run the Installer. Complete an easy install, and then restart the computer.

  2. Click HD , then click Applications , and then click Utilities .

  3. Use the Apple Desktop Printer Utility to select the printer.

  4. Complete the printer setup using either the Printer (AppleTalk) option or the Printer (LPR) option.

  5. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

Installing network printer software for Mac OS X

  1. Run the Installer. Complete an easy install.
    NOTE: If Mac OS X and OS 9.1(Classic) to 9.2x (Classic) are installed on the same computer, the installer will show both the Classic and the OS X installation options.
  2. Click HD , then click Applications , and then click Utilities .

  3. From Utilities click Print Center and then start the Print Center.

  4. If the printer appears in the Printer List , delete the printer. Click Add .

  5. On the next page, click the drop-down menu, and then click either the AppleTalk option or the IP Printing option.

  6. From the Printer Model drop-down list, click HP .

  7. Under Model Name , select the printer, and click Add .

  8. Test the software installation. Print a page from any program to make sure the software is correctly installed.
    NOTE: If installation fails, reinstall the software.

HP Internet Printing (IP)

HP IP Printing with TCP/IP.

  1. Open the Print Center.
  2. Open the Hard Drive icon on the Computer desktop.
  3. Open the Applications folder.
  4. Open the Utilities folder.
  5. Double click the Print Center icon or the Printer Setup Utility icon to run the application.
  6. Click the Add button and select hp IP Printing as the desired protocol.
  7. Click the Discover button. This step may take a few minutes to complete.
  8. Once the LaserJet 3500 is shown in the window, highlight the printer and click the Add button
  9. Close the Print Center and send a test print.
