HP Color LaserJet 2550 Series Printer - How to Download and Perform a Firmware Upgrade Using the Firmware Upgrade Utility

Firmware upgrades

At printer release, all units are manufactured with a flash-memory-based formatter allowing the firmware code to be upgraded in the event that new firmware is released for the printer or recovered in the event of code corruption or failure. When the printer is mature, formatters are typically manufactured with permanent Maske ROM (MROM), and updating or recovering the firmware code is not necessary.

NOTE: Before running a firmware upgrade, turn off the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer, and then turn it back on.

Firmware upgrade via flash executable

The Configuration page lists the firmware version of the printer. On flash-memory-based printers, the firmware code can be updated by downloading the latest flash executable for the printer and running the program as instructed. If the firmware should become corrupted or fail (usually because of an interruption when attempting to upgrade the firmware), the printer will no longer function.

Download the latest firmware

Click here to download the firmware upgrade flash executable for the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer from the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com/go/win/clj2550_fw.

Performing a firmware upgrade

The instructions for performing firmware upgrade vary according to the way the computer is connected to the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer. Choose from one of the following:
  • The HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer is connected directly to the computer through a parallel or USB cable, a full installation of the HP Color LaserJet 2550 printing-system software was performed, and the printer is in the Ready state and capable of receiving print jobs. See the section titled, " Firmware upgrade instructions for a direct parallel connection " or " Firmware upgrade instructions for a USB connection " for the appropriate instructions.

  • If any of the following scenarios apply to the setup type, see the section titled " Firmware upgrade instructions for a network connection " for the appropriate instructions. The HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer is connected to the computer through a network connection.

    • The HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer is connected to the computer via a network connection.
    • The HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer is not yet connected to the computer.
    • The HP Color LaserJet 2550 printing-system software is not installed on the computer.

Firmware upgrade instructions for a direct parallel connection

The Flash firmware .EXE file will be needed in order to upgrade the firmware on the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer.
  1. Verify that the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer is directly connected to the PC using an IEEE-1284B compliant parallel cable.
NOTE: When upgrading the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer firmware via a parallel connection, it is not necessary to have the HP Color LaserJet 2550 printing-system software installed.
  2. Simultaneously, press and release the GO and JOB CANCEL buttons on the control panel of the HP Color LaserJet 2550 series printer to print a Self-Test/Configuration page. The Self-Test/Configuration is the first page to print. Under the Product Information heading, note the Firmware Datecode. This datecode will change after the firmware upgrade has been successfully created.

  3. Turn the printer off and then back on. Verify that the printer is in the Ready state. (The green light next to the "U" shaped symbol on the printer control panel is on solid.)

  4. Locate the Flash firmware .EXE file on the computer.

  5. Double-click the Flash firmware .EXE file. The following dialog box appears.

Figure 1: Firmware Upgrade dialog box

  6. Click Start to begin the upgrade process.
CAUTION: Interrupting the firmware upgrade process by turning the printer off and then turning it back on again or by attempting to send a print job to the printer will cause the printer to go into an unrecoverable state.

The Firmware upgrade utility will complete the following steps:

    1. Close the HP Toolbox and any other HP software running on the host PC.

    2. The firmware will upload to the printer, at which point the printer lights will start flashing until the process is complete.

    3. The printer will then erase the old firmware, write the new firmware, and then reboot the printer.
NOTE: Be patient, the firmware update process may take up to five (5) minutes to complete.
  7. If the frown face icon appears in the dialog box, an error has occurred.
