HP ProLiant Servers - SCO Unix Default Boot Strings for Various Storage Controllers

ISSUE: Installation of Santa Cruz Organization (SCO) Unix Openserver 5.0.5 on a ProLiant server requires the use of specific Default Boot Strings (defbootstr) at the Boot: prompt, which vary depending on which specific storage controller is physically installed in the server.
SOLUTION:
Controller
Boot String
Integrated Smart Array controller
defbootstr link="clad" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 4200 controller
defbootstr link="clad" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 4250 ES controller
defbootstr link="clad" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 431 controller
defbootstr link="clad" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
RAID LC2 controller
defbootstr link="clad" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 642 controller
defbootstr link="ciss" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 5300 controller
defbootstr link="ciss" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 532 controller
defbootstr link="ciss" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 5i controller
defbootstr link="ciss" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Integrated 32 bit Ultra 2 Wide controller
defbootstr link="cha" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Ultra 3 Wide controllers (integrated or PCI)
defbootstr link="ad160" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 2/P controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 221 controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 2/E controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 3200 controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 2/DH controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 3100ES controller
defbootstr disable=ida link="ida cha" hd=ida0 Srom=wd(0,0,0)
Smart Array 642 controller
defbootstr link=ciss hd=Sdsk Sdsk=ciss(0,0,0,0) Srom=wd(0,0,0) (at prompt, choose 'r' to replace the driver ciss)

When prompted for the driver diskette, insert disk 4 from the current Extended Feature Supplement (EFS) disk set.

CAUSE: The default boot string (defbootstr) can be over ridden at boot time by specifying a replacement. In the case of an initial installation, the default string may not match the hardware installed. Use of the defbootstr at boot time allows installation or troubleshooting to occur.
SUMMARY: The general flow of the installation of SCO Openserver 5.0.5 on a Proliant server includes the following steps:
  • Create the EFS diskettes
  • Make sure that the controller order is correctly configured
  • Make sure the CD-ROM is set to Master and not to Cable Select
  • Install Smart Start
  • Boot from the SCO Unix media and enter the appropriate string at the prompt

More information is available on the documentation disk provided in the Extended Feature Supplement (EFS) disk set, which is downloadable from Hewlett-Packard's Web site. Also see the SCO Openserver Handbookthat is provided with the OS.

All the required HP Storage Controller drivers are provided in the HP ProLiant Extended Feature Supplement for SCO OpenServer Release 5. Click here to access the latest driver download page .
