HP Deskjet 3900 Series Printers - Setting Up the Product (Hardware)

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.

Setup the product

Follow these steps in order.

Step one: Remove the packing material

Remove all the tape and packing material from the outside and the inside of the product.

  1. Remove the tape from the outside of the product, and then open the lid.

  2. Pull the paper tray down.

  3. Remove the packing material from the inside of the product, including the packing material from the carriage.

Step two: Connect the power cord and turn the product on

  1. Plug one end of the power cord that shipped with the product into the back of the product.

  2. Plug the other end into a grounded wall outlet.

  3. Press the Power button () to turn the product on.

Step three: Load plain paper

  1. Fold down the tray extender so that it is parallel with the tray.

  2. Press the tab on the top of the paper width guide, and then slide the paper width guide as far to the left as you can.

  3. Insert a small stack of plain paper into the tray, and then slide the paper width guide firmly against the paper.

  4. Close the lid.

Step four: Install the cartridges

  1. Open the lid and wait for the carriage to move to the middle of the product.

  2. Remove the tricolor cartridge from its packaging, and then carefully remove the pink plastic tape. Hold the cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the product.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. The strips are required electrical contacts.
  3. With the copper contact on the bottom and facing the product, hold the tricolor cartridge with the front of the cartridge pointed up slightly, and then insert the cartridge into the left slot.

  4. Press firmly until the cartridge snaps into place.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the black cartridge. Insert the black cartridge into the slot on the right.

    NOTE: A black ink cartridge might not have shipped with your product. A black cartridge is not required to operate the product.
  6. Close the lid.
