Advisory: HP System Management Homepage Fails to Display Agents Information for ProLiant Servers
NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.

Release Date: 2005-11-04

Last Updated: 2006-08-29

DESCRIPTION

When logging into the HP System Management Homepage (SMH), the SMH web-based interface may not display any Management Agents data for the monitored server and the monitored server model may display as "unknown." This occurs because the SMH data collection process has timed out. The SMH data collection process timeout has been observed under the following conditions:

  • When the HP Version Control Agent is running on a highly congested network and is unable to contact HP Version Control Repository Manager.
  • When SNMP Community strings or Security settings are improperly configured in OS (preventing communication with the HP System Management Agents).
  • When other SMH integrated web applications encounter problems.

When the SMH web-based user interface begins to load, it queries all the agents for status to populate the data onto the body of the page. If any of the agents (including the Version Control Agent) are unable to communicate back within a certain timeframe, SMH will timeout the data collection process.

Some of the common causes for timeout:

  • The Version Control Agent is not properly configured to use a Valid Version Control Repository Manager.
  • SNMP community string is not configured in SNMP service. If it is configured, then the Management Agents service and the SNMP service is not restarted after the configuration change.

SMH version 2.0.1.04 (and earlier) displays an empty SMH status page, as shown in Figure 1 below:

Figure 1: System Management Homepage displaying System Model as unknown with no data.

SMH version 2.1.0 (and later) displays the following timeout message whenever SMH times out while loading data and displaying pages:

Figure 2: Timeout warning message on HP System Management Homepage

Even though timeouts may occur, the SMH pages related to configuration and logging will be available.

Any data that is obtained by an agent will be displayed in SMH. The actual information displayed will vary depending on the agent that encountered the problem and caused the timeout. The SMH log entries will display similar to the entries on the following screen:

Figure 3: Example of System Management Homepage log entries.

When the timeout occurs, information will be present in the SMH log identifying the agent that is causing the timeout. The full text of a log line will display similar to the following message:

UI Timeout -- Nav Load Time: 30s [breakdown: ACU-XE(HP Array Configuration Utility): 0s || dataprotection (Protect Your Data): 0s || hmanics (HP Management Agents for Servers (NIC component)): 0s || hmaserv (HP Management Agents for Servers (Server component)): 0s || forceteimout (CHP load timeout tool): 30s || webagent (HP Management Agents for Servers (foundation component)): 0s || elm (backwards compatibility): 0s]

This specific timeout instance was caused by an agent named "CHP load timeout tool," which took 30 seconds to return information while other agents returned information quickly enough that their time was recorded as 0 seconds. This breakdown of load times displayed in the SMH log can point to the agent that should be checked for proper configuration.

The exact content of the log line will vary depending on which agents are installed on a system.

Under certain conditions, the web-based user interface may time out and display the timeout message when there is not sufficient delay in the SMH running on the server to generate a UI Timeout log message.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant server configured with HP System Management Homepage Version 2.1.0 (or earlier).

RESOLUTION

A future release of HP System Management Homepage will prevent the timeout from occurring. This advisory will be updated when more information is available.

To prevent the SMH data collection timeout from continuing to occur, perform the following:

  1. Review the information in the SMH log to determine which Agent is causing the timeout.
  2. Verify that the configuration for that Agent is correct. If the Agent configuration is not correct, correct it and then restart the Agent and SMH.
  3. If the SMH continues to timeout, stop the Agent or uninstall the Agent.

SMH should no longer timeout.
