DESCRIPTION

Systems described in the Scope section may stop responding (hang) or generate a fatal error when using Restore CD version 10-01-03 (HP Part Number 384935-B22).

When this issue occurs, the system exhibits one of the following symptoms:

  • System stops responding and screen is black with a blinking cursor.
  • System screen is blue and displays the following error message:

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

SCOPE

Information in this document applies to the following platforms having the indicated configuration details:

Platforms:

  • HP Compaq dc7600 Convertible Minitower (CMT) PC
  • HP Compaq dc7600 Small Form Factor (SFF) PC

Serial Number Range:

xxx549xxxx or lower

Operating Systems:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Configuration:

Both of the following video adapters are installed:

  • NVIDIA NVS285 PCI Express video adapter
  • NVIDIA NV280 PCI Video Adapter

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact HP to obtain a replacement Restore CD version 10-02-03 (HP Part Number 384935-B23).

Short-Term Recovery/Workaround:

To temporarily work around the issue, remove either the NVIDIA NVS285 PCI Express or the NVIDIA NVS280 video adapter card from the system before using the Restore CD.

NOTE: Only remove one of the video adapter cards.

After the restore process is complete, re-install the NVIDIA video adapter card that was removed. The correct driver should already be available on the system, provided one of the NVIDIA video adapter cards (either the NVS285 PCI Express card or the NVS280 PCI card) was installed in the system during the restore process.
