Original Document Release

To improve reliability the HP StorageWorks Interface Manager is updating to version I170 and the HP StorageWorks Command View Tape Library (TL) product is updating to version 1.7 (v1.7.00)

NOTE: This release is not recommended for ESL9000 Series Libraries or non-SIPP ESL E-Series Libraries. It is recommended that these libraries remain at IM versions I161 or I162, and Command View-TL v1.6.01 until the next release (planned for Aug 2006) is available.

ESL-E Series Libraries that use the E1200-160 SCSI Interface Controller (IC) to communicate with the robotics unit may hang after upgrading to this firmware version. This will happen if the E1200-160 IC does not get re-discovered by the library after dropping out of topology. Use the ‘cabling’ view in Command View TL to determine if an E1200-160 IC is installed.

This issue has been fixed in the next release planned for Aug 2006.

If the features of this release are still desired it is recommended that ESL-E libraries be converted to SIPP (SCSI over IP) protocol (introduced on 10/2005) before upgrading to IM version I171 and CV-TL version 1.7.01. Please contact HP support for assistance with enabling SIPP protocol in an ESL-E series library.

To identify if you have a SIPP enabled library:

In a SIPP-enabled library, one IC is designated as the SIPP Master; it receives and implements the robot commands from the host (runs SCSI over IP). If multiple IC’s are present in a SIPP library, use the ‘cabling’ view in Command View TL to determine which IC is configured as the SIPP Master (see example below). The IC that lists the robotics under “IP device” is the SIPP master and confirms the library is SIPP enabled.

This SIPP enabled library shows Robotics on IC with Drive 2

New Features in this Release (I170/1.7 (1.7.00)):
  • Expanded Support for Multi-Unit ESL E-Series Libraries: Command View TL and the Interface Manager can now manage multi-unit libraries. See the ESL E-Series QuickSpecs for supported hardware configurations. Please note that HP recommends downloading robotics firmware and the Interface Manager firmware in separate steps in this release to workaround a known issue.

  • World Wide Name Retention: Replacing an Interface Controller will no longer require re-configuration of the host's backup software. The World Wide Name (WWN) of the new Interface Controller can be updated to match the WWN of the old Interface Controller. Please note that this feature is disabled by default but can be enabled by navigating to the Configuration tab in Command View TL.

  • Connectivity Check: Command View TL has added a new action to the Library Selection tab on the Launcher to perform a quick connectivity check with a library. The connectivity check attempts to communicate with the Interface Manager on the selected library and looks for known communication problems. If any known problems are detected, simple workarounds are presented.

  • Device Support for HP StorageWorks MSL2024 (and larger) Tape Libraries: These MSL libraries can be added to the Command View TL Launcher tab. Managing these libraries will automatically navigate to the web-based management interface for these devices.

Fixed in this Release (I170/1.7 (1.7.00)):
  • Corrected hard-coded file system pathing to support Command View TL on International or Localized versions of Windows.

  • Fixed “NullPointerException” error when navigating to the Inventory and Partitioning pages in Command View TL

  • DNS server information now cleared when restoring the Interface Manager to its default configuration.

  • All media remains visible when navigating through Command View TL Media Management and Inventory pages.

  • The network ports that the management station uses to communicate with the graphical interface of Command View TL have been set to fixed values so that communication can occur through a properly configured firewall.

  • User confirmation response is no longer ignored during firmware download through the CLI.

  • Interface Manager communication issues with the ESL E-Series libraries on 10.x.x.x networks have been resolved.

  • SCSI Reserve and Release command functionality corrected for robotics in EML E-Series and SIPP enabled ESL E-Series libraries.

  • It is no longer necessary to separately reboot an E2400-160 Interface Controller after a reboot of an ESL E-Series library.

Impact and Best Practices for features delivered in this Release (I170/1.7 (1.7.00)):
  • Updating Interface Controller firmware does not update version in the CLI Multi-Unit ESL performance issues

  • Multi-Unit ESL performance issues

  • Multi-Unit ESL firmware download to the robotics fails when also downloading to the Interface Manager

  • Best Practices for Interface Controller replacement (WWN Retention)

  • Errors reported after Interface Controller replacement

  • Command View TL access through a firewall

  • Interface Controller discovery messages in the CLI

UPDATING INTERFACE CONTROLLER FIRMWARE DOES NOT UPDATE VERSION IN THE CLI (New)

Symptom: After updating the firmware for an Interface Controller through the 'download interface' command in the Command Line Interface (CLI) the firmware version reported through other commands does not show the updated value.

Workaround: Check the firmware version again after five minutes.

MULTI-UNIT ESL PERFORMANCE ISSUES (New)

Issue: Please be aware that any operation performed in a multi-unit ESL library will take longer to perform than in a single-unit ESL due to the increased number of Interface Controllers, drives, and slots. In general, HP has found that the performance impact increases linearly as units are added.

MULTI-UNIT ESL FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD TO THE ROBOTICS FAILS WHEN ALSO DOWNLOADING TO THE INTERFACE MANAGER (New)

Symptom: When attempting to download firmware to both the Interface Manager and the robotics in a multi-unit ESL library using Command View TL, the download to the robotics fails immediately and displays an error dialog.

Workaround: Reboot the Interface Manager and download firmware to the robotics again. For this release HP recommends downloading firmware to the Interface Manager and the robotics in separate steps.

BEST PRACTICES FOR INTERFACE CONTROLLER REPLACEMENT (WORLD WIDE NAME RETENTION) (New)

When physically replacing an Interface Controller, please consult the User Guide and any documentation that is included with the new Interface Controller before performing any actions. In addition:
  • Make sure that the World Wide Name (WWN) Retention feature is enabled by navigating to the Configuration tab in Command View and clicking on the WWN Retention page.

  • Try to perform the replacement when your library has the least amount of activity going on.

  • After performing the replacement, please be patient with the Interface Manager. The Interface Manager will configure the new Interface Controller with all of the settings from the previous Interface Controller in a process that takes five to fifteen minutes to complete. Depending on the activity going on in your library this process could take an extra few minutes.

ERRORS REPORTED AFTER INTERFACE CONTROLLER REPLACEMENT (New)

Symptom: After physically replacing an Interface Controller, Command View TL and the Command Line Interface indicate a critical status for the library with an error message of "Interface Controller replacement encountered an error."

Workaround: The interface manager has detected an Interface Controller replacement when the WWN Retention feature was disabled. Run the 'show interface wwn' command from the Command Line Interface for details on how to recover. HP recommends that WWN Retention be enabled when attempting to physically replace an Interface Controller.

COMMAND VIEW TL ACCESS THROUGH A FIREWALL (New)

The following network ports are used by Command View TL to communicate with the web browser:
  • 4093 - 4095 (TCP)

  • 2715 (TCP and UDP)

By configuring your firewall to allow communication through these ports, the web browser you use to run Command View TL can be outside of the firewall. Please refer to the documentation for your particular firewall software for instructions on how to configure this access.

INTERFACE CONTROLLER DISCOVERY MESSAGES IN THE CLI (New)

The Interface Manager now prevents all operations from occurring while it is busy detecting the Interface Controllers in the library. This will generally only occur when the Interface Manager is rebooted. If you see a message indicating that this discovery is in process, please retry your operation after waiting for five minutes.
