HP Color LaserJet 2605 Series Printers - Files Needed Message Appears: "The file HPC260DS.PPD on PDL_LANG is needed"

Issue Description

When performing a “hardware first” or plug and play installation of the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer and choosing “Yes” to Connect to Windows Update to search for software, a “Files Needed” dialog prompting for the hpc260ds.ppd on PDL_LANG may appear. This message may also occur each time the computer is rebooted while the printer is connected via the USB cable.

The following messages may also appear if attempting to complete the installation by locating the missing file(s) from the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series CD that came with the printer:

  • Digital Signature Message (has not passed Windows logo testing…)

  • Please insert the Compact Disk labeled PDL_Common…

  • The file hpzsc43e.dtd on PDL_Common is needed…

Solution or Workaround

CD-ROM is Available

  1. If the Files Needed dialog is currently appearing on screen click the Cancel button to close it.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer.

  3. If the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series entry can be found in the HP program group, run the uninstaller. Click Start, Programs or All Programs, HP, HP Color LaserJet 2605 series, and then select Uninstall.

  4. Insert the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series CD into the CD-ROM drive. If installation program begins to run cancel it or exit from the installer.

  5. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder on the HP Color LaserJet 2605 Series CD ROM: <cd_rom drive>:\util\ccc.

  6. Double-click the file scrubber.exe to execute the scrubber utility.

  7. Install the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer using the CD that came with the printer or download the HP Color LaserJet 2605 PCL6 (or PostScript) plug-and-play Package from www.hp.com/go/clj2605_software .

    NOTE: Do NOT connect the USB cable to the printer until prompted by the installation program.

CD-ROM is not Available

  1. If the Files Needed dialog is currently appearing on screen click the Cancel button to close it.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer.

  3. If the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series entry can be found in the HP program group, run the uninstaller. Click Start, Programs or All Programs, HP, HP Color LaserJet 2605 series, and then select Uninstall.

  4. Click Start, Settings, Printers or Start, Printers and Faxes to open the Printers folder or Printers and Faxes folder.

  5. Delete all HP Color LaserJet 2605 drivers that may appear in the folder. Right-click the icon and choose delete. If no HP Color LaserJet 2605 entries appear proceed to the next step.

  6. In the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder click the File menu and select Server Properties.

  7. Click the Drivers tab.

  8. If HP Color LaserJet 2605 series drivers appear in the list, highlight them one at a time and click Remove to delete the entries. If no entries appear for the Color LaserJet 2605 proceed to the next step.

  9. Close the Server Properties.

  10. Close the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder.

  11. Using Windows Explorer navigate to c:\Windows\inf folder. It may be necessary to unhide protected operating system files and folders to find the inf folder (see Unhide System Files below).

  12. In the c:\Windows\inf folder find the highest numbered oem.inf file (e.g. oem22.inf). Open the oemxx.inf file in WordPad or Notepad in order to view the text of the file.

  13. Read the text to see if the file the file is associated to the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer. Or search for the text "2605", without quotes, to see if the file is associated to the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer.

  14. If the oem.inf file refers to the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer close the file and then delete the file. Also delete the oem.pnf file that is numbered the same, it should be listed next to the inf file.

    NOTE: For example, if you delete oem22.inf also delete oem22.pnf.
  15. Open the next lowest numbered oem.inf file to see if it refers to the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series. If does refer to the HP Color LaserJet 2605, delete it and the oem.pnf file numbered the same. Continue this method until there are no more oem.inf files referring the HP Color LaserJet 2605 series printer.

  16. Download the HP Color LaserJet 2605 PCL6 (or PostScript) plug-and-play Package from www.hp.com/go/clj2605_software . Do NOT connect the USB cable to the printer until prompted by the installation program.

Unhide System Files

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  2. Click the Tools menu and select Folder Options.

  3. Click the View tab.

  4. Under the Advance Settings choose Show hidden files and folders.

  5. Deselect Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Choose Yes if a warning dialog appears.

  6. Click Ok to close the Folder Options window.

Background Information

This issue is caused by a failed "hardware first" (plug-and-play) installation when using the driver files found on Windows Update. In the dialog below either of the two yes options would have be selected for this issue to occur.
