Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 - Installation may Hang During Formatting Partitions on Certain ProLiant Servers

ISSUE:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 AS Update 3 (x86) installation may hang during formatting of the partitions on certain ProLiant servers. The hang occurs during a GUI install with default settings when formatting the boot partition.

Symptoms

Spiral cursor activity and progress bar will halt during formatting boot partition.

This issue can be seen on any machine that has a Rage XL video chipset, but has been reported to fail on the following configurations:

  • ProLiant BL20p G3- 3.2GHz/800 1MB L2 Xeon x 1
  • System ROM version I08 2005.11.09
  • 1024MB Memory
  • Smart Array 6i firmware version 2.58
  • iLO firmware version 1.82
  • ProLiant DL360 G3

  • System ROM version P31 2005.03.03
  • 2048MB Memory
  • Smart Array 5i firmware version 2.62
  • Internal IDE CD-ROM drive
  • ProLiant DL360 G2
  • 1.4GHz/133 512KB L2 Pentium III x 2
  • System ROM version P26 2004.05.01
  • 1280MB Memory
  • ProLiant ML330 G2 SCSI
  • 1.133GHz/133 512KB L2 Pentium III x 1
  • System ROM version D10 2003.11.01
  • 512KB Memory
  • ProLiant BL25p

SOLUTION:

Cause

Resolution/Workaround

This issue only affects the GUI install.

  1. Install update 3 via text mode. At the command at the boot prompt type Linux askmethod text.
  2. Install update 3 via VNC mode
  3. Install using earlier Update and then upgrade to Update 3 after initial install.
