HP LaserJet 1018 Printer, M1319F Printer, 1020 Printer Series, and 1022 Printer Series - Plug and Play Fails to Appear When Attempting to Reinstall the Driver on the USB Port in Windows XP and 2000

Issue

While trying to reinstall the printer driver on the USB port in Windows XP and 2000, the Plug and Play routine fails to appear.

NOTE: Steps in this document require you to restart the computer. It is recommended that you bookmark this page for easy reference upon restart.

Solution

Use the following steps to resolve the issue.

Step one: Uninstall USB Printing Support

Follow these steps to uninstall USB printing support from Device Manager.

  1. Right-click My Computer , click Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager .

  2. Click the plus (+ ) sign to expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.

  3. Right-click USB Printing Support , select Uninstall , and then click OK .

  4. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and the product.

Step two: Uninstall the HP LaserJet software

Use one of the following methods to uninstall the product software.

Method one: Uninstall using the Windows uninstaller in the Control Panel

Follow these steps to uninstall the product software using the Windows uninstaller from the Control Panel.

  1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .

    The Control Panel window opens.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs .

  3. In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Add/Remove .

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.

    CAUTION: If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  5. Disconnect the product from the power source, and then restart the computer.

Method two: Uninstall the HP LaserJet software driver using the CD

Use the following steps to uninstall the product software using the software CD.

  1. Insert the HP LaserJet software Driver CD into the computer.

  2. Allow the CD to auto run. If the CD does not auto run, double-click My Computer , and then double-click the CD or DVD drive. The Welcome screen displays.

  3. Select the Uninstall option on the Welcome screen, and then click Next .

  4. Click Next again to start the uninstall process. The last screen of the uninstall process will be the Uninstall Complete screen.

  5. Disconnect the USB cable from the product, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now , and then click Finish to restart your computer.

Step three: Reinstall the HP LaserJet software

Use one of the following methods to reinstall the product software.

Method one: Download and install the software from the Web

Follow these steps to download and install the product software from the Web.

NOTE: HP frequently updates software and makes it available for download from the Web. The most current software is the software that is available for download on the HP Web site. The downloadable print-driver software might not contain extra software available on the original CD. However, the extra software included on the original CD is also available for download.
  1. Click here to go to the software and drivers download page on the HP Web site.

  2. If you have not already done so, type your product number in the designated text box, and then click Next .

  3. If necessary, click your product model number from the list of matching products.

  4. Click your operating system. A list of available software and driver downloads displays.

  5. In the Driver section, click the Host Based Plug and Play Package option.

  6. Thoroughly review the download options and information, and then click Install now or Download only , depending on your download preferences.

    NOTE: Click the View directions ( ) link for step-by-step instructions on downloading and installing the software.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    NOTE: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise the software installation fails.

Method two: Install from the product CD

Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.

CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.

    If the Install Wizard does not open automatically, click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
