SCOPE

The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.

RESOLUTION

This is not an issue , it is function as design. On some newer notebook PCs, HP has added LAN/WLAN features accessible in the BIOS setup utility.

  • LAN Power Saving Mode
  • LAN/WLAN Automatic Switching

The features are described below:

LAN Power Saving Mode

LAN power saving mode powers off the NIC card when the notebook PC AC power adapter is unplugged and the notebook switches to battery power.

  • Enable - If this feature is set to enable, the NIC card will power off when the AC power adapter is unplugged and No RJ-45 NIC cable is attached. The NIC will also appear to be removed from the device manager. When the NIC cable is re-inserted, the NIC will re-appear in the device manager and work.
  • Disable - If this feature is set to disable, the NIC card will stay powered on whether the notebook PC is on AC power or battery power and whether the NIC cable is attached or not.

Disable LAN Power Saving mode:

Disabling LAN power saving mode allows the NIC card to always be on whether the notebook is on AC power or notebook battery power.

  1. Start the notebook PC by pressing the Power button. If the notebook is already powered on, restart the computer.

  2. Repeatedly press F10 until the computer enters the BIOS screen.

  3. Use the arrows keys to select System Configuration .

  4. Use the arrow keys to select Device Configuration and pres Enter .

  5. Use the arrow keys to select LAN Power Saving .

  6. Use the left/right arrow keys to select Disable and then press F10 to accept the change.

  7. Use the arrow keys to select File and then use the arrow keys to select Save Changes And Exit . Press Enter .

  8. Press F10 to accept the changes.

The notebook will reboot. The LAN Power Saving mode is now disabled. To enable this feature, repeat the steps above except select Enable under LAN Power Saving.

LAN/WLAN Automatic Switching

LAN/WLAN automatic switching has 2 options;

  • Enable - If the NIC cable is connected, the WLAN is automatically disabled. If the NIC is disconnected, the notebook PC will automatically switch to WLAN. With this feature set to enable, the boot time/login time may be slightly faster due to the notebook not having to assign two TCP/IPs and search for an Access Point.
  • Disabled - If this feature is set to disable, then both the LAN/WLAN are active all of the time.

To change the LAN/WLAN automatic switching settings, perform the following:

  1. Start the notebook PC by pressing the Power button. If the notebook is already powered on, restart the computer.

  2. Repeatedly press F10 until the computer enters the BIOS screen.

  3. Use the arrows keys to select System Configuration .

  4. Use the arrow keys to select Built-in Device Options and then press Enter .

  5. Use the arrow keys to select LAN/WLAN Switching .

  6. Use the arrow keys to select Enable or Disable and press F10 to accept the change.

  7. Use the arrow keys to select File and then use the arrow keys to select Save Changes And Exit . Press Enter .

  8. Press F10 to accept the changes.

Simultaneous Access to Wireless and Wired Network

To have simultaneous access to both LAN and WLAN, set the LAN/WLAN automatic switching to disabled.
