Release Date: 2007-05-30

Last Updated: 2007-05-30

DESCRIPTION

On reboot, the HP StorageWorks MSL2024 tape library returns Drive Communication Error F1 01 after updating to library firmware version 3.10 when the library also has either an HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 running firmware version G39W or G3DW or an Ultrium 448 running firmware version S39W or S3BW.

Because the drive hosts the SCSI LUN for the library, the backup server is no longer able to communicate to the library. The drive is also put into an abnormal state and is not visible on the SCSI bus.

SCOPE

Affected Products:
AG115A -- HP MSL 2024 1 Ultrium 960 Drive Library
AG116A -- HP MSL 2024 1 Ultrium 448 Drive Library
AG117A -- HP MSL 2024 2 Ultrium 448 Drive Library

RESOLUTION

Prevention

To prevent this issue from occurring, update the drives to the latest firmware (Ultrium 960 firmware later than version G3DW or Ultrium 448 firmware later than version S3BW) before updating the library firmware to version 3.10.

Workaround

  1. Use the USB or RMI to update the Library firmware to a version earlier than 3.10.

  2. Use the USB, RMI, or the HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools to update the drive or drives to the latest firmware:
    • Update Ultrium 960 firmware later than version G3DW

    • Update Ultrium 448 firmware later than version S3BW

  3. Use the USB, RMI, or the HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools to update the library to version 3.10 or higher

Final Resolution

This issue will be fixed in library firmware version 3.30, which is expected to release in June 2007. Firmware versions 3.30 and higher should not have this issue.
