HP Deskjet 6988, 6988dt, and 6988xi Printers - Replacing the Print Cartridges

Introduction

Follow the steps below to remove, replace, or maintain the print cartridges.

Replacing the print cartridges

Step one: Remove the old print cartridges

  1. Open the printer cover.

  2. Wait until the print carriage moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and silent. Then lift the print cartridge latch to the open position.

  3. Press down lightly on top of the cartridge latch.

  4. Pull out the bottom of the latch to unhook it.

  5. Slide the cartridge out.

Step two: Install the new print cartridges

Follow the steps below to install the print cartridges.

  1. Open the printer cover.

  2. Wait until the print carriage moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and silent. Then lift the print cartridge latch to the open position.

  3. Remove the print cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the pink plastic tape. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
  4. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer, and then slide the print cartridge into the carriage as shown.

    NOTE: Always install the tri-color print cartridge in the left print carriage compartment. Install the black, photo, or gray photo print cartridge in the right print carriage compartment.
  5. Push down on the print cartridge latch until it snaps closed.

  6. Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 for the remaining cartridge.

  7. After installing both cartridges, close the top cover.

  8. Ensure there is paper loaded in the In tray

  9. The printer automatically aligns the print cartridges after a new print cartridge is installed.
