DESCRIPTION

This document applies to HP Notebook PCs with Microsoft Windows Vista
The notebook PC displays an error message on hard drives encrypted using HP ProtectTools Drive Encryption when attempting to perform a "Complete PC Backup" using the Microsoft Windows Vista OSDVD and selecting "Complete PC Recovery."

Error message: "Safeboot has been corrupted (error 92h)"

SCOPE

The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, perform the following:

  1. Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into the notebook PC optical disc drive, and then restart the computer.

  2. Press any key when you are prompted to Press any key to boot from CD....

  3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.

  4. Click Repair your computer.

  5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

  6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

  7. Type bootrec /fixmbr and then press ENTER.

  8. Follow the on screen instructions.

  9. Restore encryption if desired.

    NOTE: Restoring encryption will generate a new encryption key for this notebook PC. Any previous encryption keys will no longer be valid.
