HP Notebook PCs - Steps for Removing and Replacing the Power Button Board

This document provides instructions for the removal and replacement of the Power Button Board for the HP Compaq 8710p, HP Compaq 8710w and HP Compaq 8510p series notebook PCs.

Use the video as a guide while following the written instructions below.

Step 1 - Remove the battery

  1. Slide the battery release latch to the release position.
  2. Slide and hold the battery locking latch to the unlocked position.
  3. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.

Step 2 - Remove the keyboard

  1. Loosen the four captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then place it upside down on the top cover.
  4. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  6. Using minimal force, flip the locking bar up to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.

Step 3 - Remove the LED switchcover

  1. Remove the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Disconnect the power button board cable from the power button board connector on the system board.
  4. Use a flat-bladed tool to lift the LED switch cover hinge covers off of the display panel hinges.
  5. Separate the LED switch cover from the top cover.
    CAUTION: Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  6. Disconnect the LED board cable from the LED board connector on the system board and remove the LED switch cover.

Step 4 - Remove the power button board

  1. Remove the T8-3 mm screw that secures the power button board to the LED switch cover.
  2. Lift the power button board off of the LED switch cover and remove.
  3. Place the power button board in a static dissipative bag.

Step 5 - Replace the power button board

  1. Remove the power button board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Align and place the power button board into position on the LED switch cover.
  3. Replace the T8-3 mm screw that secures the power button board to the LED switch cover.

Step 6 - Replace the switchcover

CAUTION: Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  1. Reconnect the LED board cable to the LED board connector on the system board.
  2. Place the LED switch cover into position on the top cover.
  3. Press along the entire length of the LED switch cover to snap it into place.
  4. Reconnect the power button board cable to the power button board connector on the system board.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.

Step 7 - Replace the keyboard

  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
    CAUTION: Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.

Step 8 - Replace the battery

  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.
