HP Notebook PCs - HP BIOS Application Selected is Corrupt or Missing

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with the HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) beginning in late-2008.

During the startup process, the system performs a checksum test of the BIOS. If the checksum is incorrect, the BIOS is assumed to be corrupt and the system will install a hidden copy of the BIOS to correct the problem and the startup process continues. The following message will be displayed for 15 seconds before the computer automatically reboots. You have the option of pressing ENTER to proceed without waiting 15 seconds.

The CMOS checksum is invalid.
The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted.
Please check your BIOS Setup options to see if they changed.

After the computer starts, a second message is displayed to indicate that the BIOS has been reset. This is an informational message and no additional action is required. However, if this error occurs more than once, there may be an issue with the installed version of the BIOS, and you should install an updated BIOS.

Run HP Support Assistant

To resolve a BIOS error, you should run the HP Support Assistant (for Vista and Windows 7) to check the computer for the latest BIOS and other issues.

  • Go to the www.hp.com/go/helpandsupport web page to download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant.

  • Launch HP Support Assistant, select Maintain , select Tune up , and then click Start Tune-up . Complete all recommended actions.

Install an updated BIOS

To resolve a BIOS issue, you should install the latest BIOS using one of the methods described in the following documents.

WARNING: You must install a BIOS designed for your specific model and Central Processing Unit (CPU). Attempting to install an incorrect BIOS will damage the computer and may cause the computer to stop operating completely.

You may wish to use a different computer to download the BIOS from the HP web site onto a portable storage device or USB thumb drive, and then copy the file to the computer with the corrupted or missing BIOS application.
