HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909a), 8500 Premier (A909n), and 8500 Wireless (A909g) All-in-One Printers - Color or Brightness Level of Scanned Image is Not Correct

Issue

The scanner is working, but the color or brightness of the scanned image does not match the original image. The colors or brightness might appear faded, but the colors are not drastically different.

Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Check the Automatic Settings in HP Solution Center

Follow these steps to check and adjust the Automatic Settings in HP Solution Center.

  1. Open HP Solution Center:

    • Windows XP: Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .

    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .

    HP Solution Center opens in a new window.

  2. Click Settings ( ).

  3. Click Scan Settings , and then click Scan Preferences . The Scan Preferences window opens.

  4. Adjust the following settings according to your original:

    Original type
    Settings
    Image (a picture, drawing, graphic, or other non text image)
    Select the Picture tab, and then check or uncheck (depending on their current state) the following settings:
    • Automatically adjust exposure

    • Automatically adjust color

    • Use enhanced color (vivid color)

    • Automatically adjust black and white threshold

    Document (anything other than an image)
    Select the Document tab, and then check or uncheck (depending on their current state) the following settings:
    • Automatically adjust exposure

    • Automatically adjust black and white threshold

  5. Click OK , and then try scanning again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Adjust the scan preview settings

Follow these steps to adjust the Lighten/Darken and Adjust Color settings in the scan preview in HP Solution Center.

  1. Load your original and start the scan again. The scan preview opens in the HP Scanning window.

  2. Click the Lighten/Darken tab ( ).

  3. Click the Manual button to activate the Lighten/Darken values.

  4. Adjust the slider bars to increase or decrease the Highlights , Shadows , Midtones , and Gamma values.

    NOTE: Click the Auto button to return to the original settings.
  5. Click the Adjust Color tab ( ).

  6. Adjust the slider bar to increase or decrease the Saturation value. The scan preview reflects these changes in real time.

  7. Select or clear the Enhanced Color checkbox, if necessary.

  8. Click Finish , and then wait for the scan to process.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Rotate the original and try scanning again

  1. Remove your original from the scanner glass, rotate it 90 °, and then reload the original on the scanner glass.

    NOTE: See the engraved guides on the scanner glass for assistance loading the original.
  2. Try scanning again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Restore the Scan Preferences defaults

Follow these steps to restore the default Scan Preferences settings in HP Solution Center.

  1. Open HP Solution Center:

    • Windows XP: Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .

    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .

    HP Solution Center opens in a new window.

  2. Click Settings ( ).

  3. Click Scan Settings , and then click Scan Preferences . The Scan Preferences window opens.

  4. Click the Document tab , and then click Restore Defaults .

  5. Click the Picture tab, and then click Restore Defaults .

  6. Click OK , and then try scanning again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product, which forces the product to recalibrate the scanner.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.

    NOTE: The product might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

  4. Wait 30 seconds.

  5. Replug the power cord into the electrical outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
