HP LaserJet Printers - Sharing Printer from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Windows Vista in a Network

Issue

How to share a printer from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Windows Vista in a network.

Please note that this is Microsoft Windows functionality. Sharing a printer over a network is a feature of Microsoft Windows.

The following information is an example of how to set this up and uses the printer driver from an HP LaserJet 3050 All-in-One. These instructions can vary based on many factors unrelated to the HP device.

Solution

Note: Both the computers should be connected in the same network.

Install the full software solution on your Windows XP PC. During installation, you’ll be prompted to connect the printer to your PC. Choose the correct option to proceed with installation and connect the printer. After installation is completed, click Start

Note : In order to perform the following steps, User account should have the administrator rights.

1. Click Start .

2. Click Control Panel .

3. Click Printers and Other Hardware . (See the illustration that follows.)

4. Click Printers and Faxes . (See the illustration that follows.)

5. Select the correct driver, e.g.: HP LaserJet 3050 Series PCL 6, and right-click it. From the drop-down list, select Properties . (See the illustration that follows.)

6. Click Sharing tab.

7. Select Share this printer and enter a simple name for the shared printer, e.g.: 3050

8. Click Apply . (See the illustration that follows.)

Note: You may need to add Accounts , under the Security tab in the driver properties, in order to access the shared printer from other computer. (See the illustration that follows.)

In Windows Vista PC, install the printer’s driver. Then, perform the following procedure in order to access the shared printer:

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

1. Click Start (Windows Orb ).

2. Click Control Panel .

3. Click Hardware and Sound . (See the illustration that follows.)

4. Click Add a printer . (See the illustration that follows.)

5. Click Add a local printer and click Next . (See the illustration that follows.)

6. Select Create a new port , select Local Port from the list and click Next .

For the Port Name, enter ‘\\IP address of Windows XP PC\shared printer’s name’. e.g.: ‘\\192.168.1.100\3050’ (See the three illustrations that follow.)

Note: If you are prompted for a user name and password, type the user name and password which is used in the Windows XP PC.

7. Click OK and, then, Next .

8. Select HP under the Manufacturer and, then, the correct printer driver under Printers . Click Next . (See the illustration that follows.)

9. Enter the printer name and check-mark the ‘Set as the default printer’

Click Next . (See the two illustrations that follow.)

10. Select ‘Do not share this printer’ and click Next . (See the illustration that follows.)

11. Click Print a test page .

12. Click Finish . (See the illustration that follows.)
