Installing Printer Software for a USB Connection in Windows for the HP LaserJet P1505 and P1505n Printers

Introduction

This document explains how to obtain and install print drivers and other software for the product from the Web. A print driver is a software program that allows the computer to communicate with the HP product to run print jobs and other commands.

The software on the CD that shipped with the new product is the most current software available when the HP manufactured the product. However, after manufacturing and shipping a product, HP frequently updates software and makes it available for download from the Web.

The most current software is the software that is available for download on the HP Web site. The downloadable print-driver software might not contain extra software available on the original CD. However, the extra software included on the original CD is also available for download.

Method one: Update the print-driver installation automatically using the HP Driver Diagnostic Tool

The HP Driver Diagnostics tool reviews your system to see whether the product print driver needs an update. The tool also makes sure that the product setup and installation are complete, and updates, uninstalls, or reinstalls the driver if necessary.

NOTE: This tool works only on products connected directly to a computer with a USB cable.

Method two: Download and install the software from the Web

The software and driver downloads available from the HP Web site might include a basic driver option and a Full Feature Software and Driver option. The basic driver is sufficient to perform basic printing functions with your product. The Full Feature option installs extra software to allow full use of all features available with the product. The Full Feature option also allows you to do a custom installation.

Follow these steps to download the software from the HP Web site, and then install the software on your computer.

  1. Click here to go to the Software and driver download page.

  2. Under Locate your product to get support, type the product model.

  3. If necessary, select the product number under Select your product from the list below.

  4. Under Select your operating system, click the appropriate operating system.

  5. In the Driver section, review the list of available driver downloads, and then click the appropriate driver.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software.

NOTE: If you are installing the Full Feature Software and Driver, you will need to choose between the following installation types during the installation process:

Recommended installation: This contains the required print driver plus additional software to enhance the functionality of the product, and is designed to work for most users.

Custom installation: This allows you to install the minimum software required. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:

  • The computer is low on hard disk space.

  • You do not need additional software.

  • You attempted a Recommended installation and received errors. (If errors occur during a Recommended installation, fix them before trying a Custom installation.)

Method three: Install the software from a CD

The product CD includes more than just the print driver. The CD might also include the product user guide, drivers in other languages, and special features or additional software.

NOTE: The software that is available for download on the HP Web site is likely to be more recent than the software on a CD, whether you use the CD that was shipped with the product or purchase a new CD.

Step one: Obtain a product CD

  1. Click here to go to the Software and driver download page.

  2. Under Locate your product to get support, type the product model.

  3. If necessary, select the product number under Select your product from the list below.

  4. Under Select your operating system, click the appropriate operating system.

  5. In the CD-ROM order page section, click the latest software version.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to order a new software CD.

Step two: Install from the product CD

Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.

CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue, unblock, yes, allow, or permit. Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.

NOTE: If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.

If the Install Wizard does not open automatically, follow these steps to open it:

    • Windows XP or 2000: Click Start, click My Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

NOTE: Installation options that are available on the product CD vary depending on your computer operating system. Use the following guidelines to determine which installation option suits your installation needs.
  • Standard: The standard software installation contains the required print driver plus additional software to enhance the functionality of the product, and is designed to work for most users. The standard installation is called Recommended, Full, or Easy, depending on the operating system.

  • Customized: A customized installation is available to install the minimum software required or preferred software. This installation option is called Custom, Express, or Advanced, depending on the operating system. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:

    • The computer is low on hard-disk space.

    • You do not need additional software.

    • You attempted a standard installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the standard installation, fix them before trying a customized installation.)
