DESCRIPTION

The following ProLiant G6-series servers do not support mixing Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs) and Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) in the same system. If UDIMMs and RDIMMs are mixed, any or all of the following scenarios outlined in the Details section may occur.

  • HP ProLiant ML350 G6
  • HP ProLiant ML370 G6
  • HP ProLiant DL360 G6
  • HP ProLiant DL380 G6
  • HP ProLiant BL460c G6
  • HP ProLiant BL490c G6
  • HP ProLiant DL370 G6

The following ProLiant G6-series servers do not support mixing Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs) and Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) in the same system; however, these servers do not exhibit the conditions detailed below:

  • ProLiant DL160 G6
  • ProLiant DL180 G6
  • ProLiant ML150 G6

DETAILS

If both UDIMMs and RDIMMs are used in any of the ProLiant G6-series servers listed in the first paragraph of the Description section above, any or all of the following will occur:

  • The system will stop responding during system boot, prior to video being displayed
  • All DIMM LEDs will illuminate amber
  • The Health LED will blink red
  • The system will emit continuous beeps
  • An entry will be logged to the Integrated Management Log (IML)

If the system is configured with HP iLO 2 Firmware Version 1.75, the following IML entry will be logged with a severity of Caution: Uncorrectable Memory Error (Module Unknown)

Note: This does NOT indicate a failed DIMM; this only indicates a DIMM configuration error.

If the system is configured with HP iLO 2 Firmware Version 1.77 (or later), the following IML entry will be logged with a severity of Caution: Memory Configuration Error: System boot halted.

Other DIMM configuration errors, which will result in the same symptoms as described above, include:

  • No DIMMs are installed in the system
  • Installing a DIMM on a memory channel when the first DIMM on that memory channel is not installed
  • More than two UDIMMs are installed on a memory channel.
  • If any quad-rank DIMMs are attached to a processor, no memory channel on that processor can have more than 2 DIMMs installed
  • Quad-rank DIMMs are populated on a memory channel, but not populated as the first DIMM on that memory channel

Refer to the User Guide for each of the ProLiant G6-Series servers listed in the Description section above to determine the proper method for populating DIMM slots and channels.
