HP xw4600 Workstation - Memory

This section describes how to remove and install a memory module.

Removing a memory module

  1. Disconnect power from the system (Predisassembly procedures) and remove the side access panel (Removing the side access panel).

To ensure that memory modules are not damaged during removal or installation, power off the workstation and unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet. If you do not unplug the power cord before installing memory, the modules might be damaged and the system will not recognize the memory changes.
  2. Push gently outward on the socket levers (1).

    1:

  3. Lift the DIMM straight up and out of the socket. Store the DIMM in an anti static bag (2).

This section describes how to install a memory module.

Supported DIMM configurations

The HP xw4600 Workstation supports these memory module configurations:

  • Four DIMM slots

  • Dual-channel DIMMs

Memory module requirements

HP only ships DIMMs that are electrically and thermally compatible with this workstation. Because third-party DIMMs might not be electrically or thermally compatible, they are not supported by HP.

DIMMs and their sockets are keyed for proper installation. Be sure these guides line up when installing DIMMs.

Use only industry-standard, unbuffered, PC2–5300E (667 MHz) or PC2–6400E (800 MHz) DIMMs.

If multiple DIMMs are installed in a workstation, they must be installed in pairs of the same size and type in each channel.

Required DIMM installation order

Use the following illustration as a guide for installing memory:

  • If installing only one DIMM, it must be installed in socket (1).

  • The first DIMM pair must be installed in sockets (1) and (3).

  • The second DIMM pair must be installed in sockets (2) and (4).
