Checking Ink Levels for HP Deskjet 5650 and 6540 Printers

Introduction

The Ink Status window is part of the printer software and appears each time the printer prints a file. The window automatically displays the approximate ink level of each cartridge.

NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.

Checking ink levels

To check to the status of your cartridges, follow these steps to print and evaluate a diagnostic page.

Step one - Print a diagnostic page

  1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.
  2. Press and hold the Power button (), then press the Cancel () button. Release both buttons. The diagnostic page will print.

Step two - Identify the cartridges on the diagnostic page

Identify where each cartridge printed on the diagnostic page so that if you find defects on the diagnostic page, you will know which cartridge is the problem. Different cartridge combinations print different diagnostic page patterns. The diagnostic page might not look exactly like the example below, but the right and left cartridges always print on the same areas of the page.

2 - Printed by the left cartridge
NOTE: If you are printing in reserve mode (one cartridge is removed), there will be a blank area on the diagnostic page where that cartridge normally prints.

Step three - Check the ink levels

NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.

Look in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (Empty) and "F" (Full) at each end show the ink levels in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color will change to a faded color.
