HP StorageWorks MSL2024 Tape Library - Removing and Replacing the Magazine


This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the magazine for the HP StorageWorks MSL2024 Tape Library.


Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.


Tools required

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver

  • Small metal pin or paper clip

  • Ground strap

  • Electrostatic containers

  • HP Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) diagnostic software

NOTE: Part numbers are subject to change.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the magazine that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP .

NOTE: For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation* (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Magazine removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    CAUTION: Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
    NOTE: HP recommends that you release the magazines using the operator control panel (OCP) or the Remote Management Interface (RMI). However, you can manually release the magazines if the OCP and RMI procedures fail, if both left and right magazines need to be removed, or if the magazine needs to be removed when the power to the tape library is off.
  2. Using the OCP or the RMI, release the left or right magazine.

  3. Pull the released magazine out of the library.

    NOTE: If necessary, the magazines can be released manually by inserting a small metal pin or paper clip into the appropriate release hole.
    CAUTION: Do not force the magazine removal if you encounter an unusual amount of resistance.
NOTE: The library cannot perform any operations until the magazine is replaced.

Magazine replacement

  1. If appropriate, move the tapes from the old magazine to the new magazine.

  2. Slide the magazine completely into the library.

    NOTE: The magazine will lock into place once it is correctly installed and the library will inventory the magazine.
