Replacing the Printhead for HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One Printer Series (C510)

This document is for the HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One Printer Series (C510).

A printhead assembly is formed by cartridges fitted into printheads. A new printhead assembly might need to be installed when the existing printhead assembly is damaged or is incompatible with the printer. Replacement printhead assemblies are only available from HP Support or authorized service providers.

Order the Printhead Assembly

These steps apply to the United States only.

If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges.

If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, you can purchase a new one online.

  1. Go to the HP Parts Store website (in English).

  2. Under Find your part(s), type CN642A in the Search by part number text box.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order the printhead assembly.

These steps apply to all countries/regions except the United States.

If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges with the replacement printhead.

If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, you can purchase a new one online.

  1. Go to the HP How to Buy website , and then click your country-language.

  2. A Buy HP page displays. Look for the HP Parts store on this page. The location of the HP Parts store varies depending on your region. Click HP Parts store.

  3. Under Find your part(s), type CN642A in the Search by part number text box. Follow the on-screen instructions to order the printhead assembly.

This information applies to Asia Pacific only.

If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges. If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, call the HP Customer Care Center for assistance.

Replace the printhead assembly

Follow these steps to replace the printhead assembly.

NOTE: Wait until a new printhead assembly is available before removing the cartridges. Do not leave the cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes. Leaving the printhead and cartridges outside the printer for long periods can damage the printer and the supplies.

Step one: Remove the old cartridges

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. To remove the old cartridge, press the tab on the front of the cartridge, and then pull it up to remove it from its slot.

    CAUTION: Do not lift the carriage latch handle to install the cartridges. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing problems. The latch must remain down to install the cartridges correctly.
  4. Repeat the previous step to remove each of the cartridges.

Step two: Remove the old printhead

NOTE: The printer shown in the following video might look slightly different than your printer, but the steps still apply.
  1. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

  2. Lift the printhead to remove it from the carriage.

Step three: Clean the electrical contacts inside the printer

NOTE: The printer shown in the following video might look slightly different than your printer, but the steps still apply.

For successful printhead assembly replacement, it is important to get the electrical contacts inside the printer as clean as possible. The replacement printhead assembly comes with pre-moistened wipes.

Use these wipes to clean the electrical contacts inside the printer. Wipe from the top to the bottom of the electrical contacts, in one direction only. As the wipes become dirty, discard the used wipes and open new ones.

CAUTION: Do not wipe up and down or side to side, as doing so can damage the printer.

Step four: Install the new printhead

  1. Remove the new printhead from its packaging.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts. Do not scratch the electrical contacts on the printer or any other surface.

  2. Hold the printhead upright with the colored shape icons on the top.

  3. Lower the printhead into the carriage.

  4. Carefully lower the latch handle.

Step five: Load plain paper

  1. Raise the output tray into the open position, and then open the input tray door.

  2. Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

  3. Insert the stack of paper into the input tray with the short edge forward and the print side down.

  4. Adjust the paper width guide so that it rests against the stack of paper.

  5. Lower the output tray, and then close the input tray door.

Step six: Install the new cartridges

NOTE: Do not reuse the old cartridges. Old cartridges might damage the new printhead.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If it does, allow it to move to that position.

  3. On the new cartridge, pull the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap.

  4. Twist the orange cap counter clockwise to snap it off.

  5. With the cartridge contacts facing the printhead, slide the cartridge into the empty slot, and then press down on the cartridge until it clicks firmly into place.

    NOTE: Make sure that the color-coded icon on the cartridge matches the color-coded icon on the carriage slot.

  6. Repeat these steps to install the other cartridges.

  7. Close the cartridge access door. The carriage returns to the right side of the printer.

Step seven: Align the printer

After loading plain white paper, touch OK on the printer control panel. The printer automatically prints an alignment page to align the cartridges.

If the printer fails to align automatically, follow these steps to manually align the printer.

  1. Open HP Solution Center:

    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.

    • Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.

    HP Solution Center opens in a new window.

  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ().

  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox. The Toolbox opens in a new window.

  4. Click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Printheads ().

  5. Click Print Page. The printer prints an alignment page.

Step eight: Return failed parts to HP

If the new printhead assembly came with a post-paid mailing label and instructions to return the failed parts to HP, please do so. HP wants to analyze the parts in order to improve our printers in the future.

If a post-paid return mailing label is not included with the new printhead assembly, you are done, and there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

  1. Put the old printhead into the plastic package that the new printhead arrived in.

  2. Peel off the lid sticker labeled B and use it to seal the printhead package.

  3. Use the orange caps from the new cartridges to cap the old cartridges.

  4. Put the old parts and the form that came with the new parts into the box that the new parts came in. If possible, also include a sample printout that shows the issue with the old printhead.

  5. Close the box, apply the post-paid mailing label, and then put the box in the mail.
