HP TouchSmart Desktop PCs - Using the HP TouchSmart 4.0 Software

This information applies to HP TouchSmart computers with the HP TouchSmart 4.0 software installed.

HP has released a new version of HP TouchSmart: TouchSmart 4.0. You can use HP TouchSmart 4.0 with HP TouchSmart 300 and 600 series PCs. This article provides an overview on how to use the various features in the TouchSmart software.

Read one of the following sections to learn more about TouchSmart 4.0.

Updating TouchSmart

Did you know HP updates its TouchSmart software to add new features and tools? To get the latest features, update the TouchSmart software from the Internet. Go to the HP software and drivers Web site , and type the model of your computer, such as TouchSmart 310. Select your Windows version, and under Software - Solutions, find the HP TouchSmart Application Update . Read the instructions on the Web page to download and install the update.

NOTE: If you have a TouchSmart PC that is using HP TouchSmart 3.0 software, you can upgrade it 4.0 by installing the HP TouchSmart Upgrade Enabler from the Software and Driver download page for your HP TouchSmart PC model number and then using HP Support Assistant to download all the available updates.

Opening the HP TouchSmart software

To open the HP TouchSmart software, double-tap the HP TouchSmart shortcut icon on the computer desktop.

Navigating in HP TouchSmart

You can use touch, a stylus (purchased separately), or the keyboard and mouse to select items in the HP TouchSmart software. The HP TouchSmart 4.0 software offers easy access to your photos, videos, music, the Internet, and other software programs on the HP TouchSmart computer. You can use touch, or the keyboard and mouse to select and deselect, sort, and move items in HP TouchSmart. There is also an onscreen keyboard or Windows Touch Input Panel that enables you to enter text by using touch.

CAUTION: Because the HP TouchSmart touch screen uses a sensitive touch technology, to avoid damaging the touch screen, do not press on the front of the display bezel or around the screen borders.

To achieve the best touch sensitivity, keep the screen clean from foreign objects. Avoid excessive dust accumulation on all sides of the screen. Keep the HP TouchSmart screen surface clean.

There are several ways you can use software programs from within the TouchSmart software.

  • House icon - Tap to go back to the HP TouchSmart Magic Canvas.

  • Close or Minimize - Tap to exit or minimize HP TouchSmart and return to the Windows desktop.

  • Back Arrow - Tap to return to the previous window.

  • Settings - Tap to manage the tiles, choose a background, or change the preferences on your HP TouchSmart homepage.

  • Scrolling left and right, or up and down - To scroll right or left on the Magic Canvas, touch anywhere on the background and drag your finger across the screen in the direction you want to scroll, and then stop before lifting. For more control while scrolling, keep your finger in contact with the screen.

    NOTE: If you touch a magnet instead of the background, you interact with the item instead of scrolling.

  • Tile View browsing - drag your finger across the tiles to browse through them, and then tap a tile to open it.

  • Fan View browsing (photos, music, and videos) - tap the Fan icon in the bottom-right corner to select the Fan View, drag the fan left or right, and then tap an item to open it.

  • Two-touch folder preview - press and drag in the row using two fingers to expand folders to a nine-square preview in the Photo, Music, and Video modules.

Using the Magic Canvas

HP TouchSmart 4.0 opens to the Magic Canvas. You can play music and videos, view pictures and create graffiti on the Magic Canvas. You can have several applications open at the same time. The application you are working in appears in wide interactive mode, while the other applications appear in tile mode on the Magic Canvas.

Scroll right or left to view open applications and magnets on the magic canvas. There are several layers on the screen that move at different speeds as you scroll across.

Opening a magnet

To open a magnet on the Magic Canvas, tap it to open the magnet menu. The menu for each magnet type can be different. For example, to open a Photo magnet, tap the photo on the Magic Canvas. Then tap the Menu button to open the menu. To open the Photo application, tap Launch Photo .

Playing a Music or Video magnet

You can play a video or music magnet while using application on the HP TouchSmart. Tap the Music or Video magnet and tap Play . To quit, tap Pause .

Opening applications from the carousel

The carousel at the bottom of the Magic Canvas contains tiles of available applications and websites. To open a TouchSmart application, tap the icon in the carousel.

To view all the tiles in the carousel in alphabetical order, tap the Quick Launch button in the lower left of the Magic Canvas.

Tap the Quick Launch button to display a list of all your TouchSmart applications in alphabetical order.

Using the Magic menu

The Magic menu has shortcuts for common tasks, such as finding magnets, and creating a note or video, or taking a picture.

Tap the Magic Canvas to reveal the Magic menu.

  • Create - tap to create a note, video, or photo.

  • Find - tap to find a magnet on the Magic Canvas. A screen displays showing all the magnets. You can also sort the magnets by category. Tap a magnet to open it, or tap the X or Trash icon to delete it. When finished, tap Done .

  • Background - tap to open the Background menu on the Magic Canvas settings.

Changing the background

You can select a background image to display on the TouchSmart Magic Canvas.

  • To add more background images, copy them to the HP TouchSmart folder found in Public Pictures .

  • Supports .jpg and .png file types

  • Images that have a 16:9 aspect ratio display the best. Ideal picture size is 1920 x 1080.

To set a Desktop background:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Settings button .

  2. Tap the Choose Background tab.

  3. Choose an animated background, or choose a picture and picture decoration.

  4. Tap Done to apply the background.

Viewing applications on the Magic Canvas

With the HP TouchSmart, you can have several applications open at the same time. The application you are working in appears in wide interactive mode, while the other open applications appear in tile mode.

Tile mode - When an application is in tile mode, tap in the center of the tile to activate the application into wide interactive mode; or tap the X in the upper right corner to close the application.

Wide interactive mode - When an application is in wide interactive mode, you can minimize to tile mode, maximize to view the application in full screen, or close the application.

Creating Magnets

Magnets are shortcuts to photos, music, and videos stored in your library. You can view pictures, play music and videos, and post lists and reminders on the Magic Canvas. The canvas continually grows as you keep adding new content.

Creating Photo, Music, and Video Shortcut Magnets

Use one of the following ways to create shortcut magnets.

  • Open the Photo, Music, or Video application and drag the file onto the Magic Canvas.

  • Open the Photo, Music, or Video application. In full screen or wide interactive mode, drag the photo, music, or video into the upper bar of the application window. Tap the Close button to close the message.

  • Use the create magnet button. In the Photo, Music, or Video application, tap the Create Magnet button, and then tap the green Plus sign. A message appears confirming that a new magnet has been created. Tap the Close button to close the message.

  • To remove a magnet, tap the magnet, tap the magnet menu button, and then tap Remove .

    Removing a magnet from the Magic Canvas does not remove the photo, music, or video from the library.

Creating Graffiti Magnets

Graffiti is another type of magnet that you can create directly on the Magic Canvas.

  1. To create graffiti, tap the Magic Canvas to open the Magic Menu. Tap Graffiti on the menu.

  2. Tap a Color button and use your finger to write your graffiti on the screen. To correct your graffiti, tap the Eraser tool and use your finger to erase the unwanted content. To start over, tap the Clear button.

    Tap Save when you are done.

  3. The Graffiti magnet displays on the screen. Touch and drag the magnet to change the position. Tap the magnet, and then tap the Push Pin to lock the position.

  4. If you want to remove graffiti from the Magic Canvas, tap the Graffiti magnet, tap the magnet menu button , and then tap Delete .

Working with tiles

You can delete, add back a deleted tile, and change the color of the tile.

Adding a Web site tile to the carousel

Use the following steps:

  1. Tap the Settings button.

  2. Tap Add a website tile .

  3. On the right side of the screen choose a Web site or type in a URL, and then tap OK .

  4. Personalize the tile by choosing a color.

    To change the default icon, tap Change . Choose an icon and then tap OK . Then tap Done . The tile appears in the carousel.

  5. To change the position of the tile in the carousel, return to the Magic Canvas. Drag the tile up from the carousel and down into the new location.

Removing an application from the carousel

Use the following steps:

  1. To remove a tile from the carousel, tap the Settings button.

  2. Tap the application tile you want to remove.

  3. Tap Delete , and then tap Yes .

  4. Tap Done .

    The tile is no longer in the carousel.

NOTE: Deleting a tile from the carousel does not remove the application from your computer.

Adding back a deleted TouchSmart program tile

Use the following steps to add back a deleted TouchSmart program tile:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Settings button.

  2. Tap Restore a deleted app . A list displays that contains the deleted TouchSmart Program tiles.

  3. Tap the application you want to restore, tap OK, and then tap to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage. Done

    The tile is returned to the carousel.

Changing a tile color

Use the following steps to change the color of a tile:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Settings button.

  2. On the Manage My Tiles tab, select a tile to change.

  3. In the Choose a Color area, tap a color.

  4. Tap Done to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.

HP TouchSmart Browser

HP TouchSmart puts the web at your fingertips with its easy, versatile browser. Navigate and explore the Internet using multi-touch gestures. Pinch, zoom, and slide to wherever you want to go, and add sites to your favorites with just a touch.

Navigating in TouchSmart Browser

Use the following information to navigate in TouchSmart Browser.

  • Select: Drag one finger over an area to select it.

  • Scroll: Drag one finger up and down or sideways in the Browser window to view the entire Web page.

    NOTE: The page moves with your finger in the direction you are dragging; this is opposite from Windows scroll bar behavior
  • Follow links or open items: Tap a link that you want to follow, or tap an item you want to open or download. However, watch for the pop-up icon.

  • Go to new sites: To enter URLs into the address bar, highlight the current one with your finger. Using the on-screen keyboard or the physical keyboard, enter the URL.

Searching the Internet

To use the Browser to search the Internet, complete the following steps:

  1. Tap the Search icon in the browser bar.

  2. Type the search phrase.

  3. Press the Enter key to begin searching.

Adding a Web site to your Favorites

To add a Web site to your Favorites, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Browser to the Web site you want to make a Favorite.

  2. Tap Add to Favorites .

  3. Verify the information, and then tap Save .

Viewing pop-ups and secondary windows

HP TouchSmart Browser allows you to see any secondary windows or pop-ups as new pages. They do not appear as traditional pop-ups in front of the current browser page.

Click the Pages button to see the open pages, and then click the page you want to see.

While in the Page view, click the X in the upper right corner of the page to close it.

Switching over to Internet Explorer

You can switch over to Internet Explorer from the TouchSmart Browser.

  1. Tap the address bar of the current page to open the link at the right side of the bar.

  2. Tap Open in Internet Explorer .

    HP TouchSmart minimizes and Internet Explorer opens on the desktop.

  3. Tap the Internet Explorer Close button to return to HP TouchSmart Browser.

HP TouchSmart Calendar

TouchSmart Calendar is a shared calendar where you can manage your family’s schedule. You can also view scheduled events for today and tomorrow, e-mail calendar events with Google mail, and print your schedule.

Viewing a calendar event

Use the following steps to view an event on your calendar:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Calendar tile.

  2. Select Year , Month , Week , or Day .

  3. Lightly press and drag your finger horizontally across the screen to scroll through the dates you want to view.

  4. Tap the House icon to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Scheduling a calendar event and setting a reminder

Events are displayed on the HP TouchSmart homepage if the calendar tile is located in the upper row. The HP TouchSmart homepage displays up to four appointments. It updates periodically by removing past events and listing upcoming appointments for that day. HP TouchSmart Calendar shows the appointment start time of the event when it displays on the homepage.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Tap Add Event .

    The Add New Event screen displays.

  3. Tap Event to select an event type from a list of event types. Select an event type such as Birthday, and then tap Done .

    -Or-

    Tap Add New Event to add a new event type.

  4. Tap Event Title , and then type in an event title.

  5. Tap Description , and then type in a description of your event.

  6. If the event occurs during the entire day, place a checkmark in the All day Event check box.

  7. Tap the arrows next to the start and end dates and times to enter this information for your event.

  8. If this is a recurring event, tap the drop-down arrow in the Recurrence area, and then select Daily , Weekly , Monthly , or Yearly .

  9. To set a reminder to alert you before the event, tap the drop-down arrow next to Reminder , and then select a reminder time.

  10. After you have entered your event information, tap Save .

  11. To view the details you entered, open Calendar , tap the date, and then tap the event.

Deleting a calendar event

To delete an event from your HP TouchSmart Calendar, use the following steps:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Select a calendar event.

  3. Tap the Delete button, and then tap Yes .

Editing a calendar event

Use the following steps to edit an event:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Select a calendar event.

  3. In the inline Edit mode, make your changes, and tap Save .

Printing your calendar

Use the following steps to print your calendar:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Tap Print .

  3. Select printer settings and paper size.

  4. Select event settings and time range.

  5. Tap Print .

Setting up the Calendar e-mail feature

Use the following steps to set up the Calendar e-mail feature:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Tap Settings .

  3. Enter your Google mail account settings and password. (If you do not have a Google mail account, set up one first .)

  4. Tap Test e-mail login .

    • If successful, in the Authentication Succeeded box, tap OK

    • If unsuccessful, tap OK to verify that the e-mail options are correct and reenter the account information.

  5. Tap Done .

To set up a Google mail account:

  1. Go to the Google Create an Account Web site Non-HP site .

  2. Register for a new e-mail account.

  3. Use the new Google e-mail account information in the Calendar Settings.

E-mailing a calendar event with Google mail

You must have a Google mail account to e-mail notes. Use Calendar Settings to register your account and setup the Calendar e-mail feature

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Select a calendar event.

  3. Tap E-mail to , enter an e-mail address, tap Add , and then tap Done .

Enabling calendar reminders

If calendar reminders are not displaying in TouchSmart in the notification bar, check whether the Calendar Service process is running. If Calendar Service is not running, use the following steps to start it.

  1. Open Windows Task Manager.

  2. Tap the Services tab and look for CalendarSynchService .

  3. In the CalendarSynchService row, check that the Status is Running .

  4. If the CalendarSynchService is not running, start the service. Using the mouse, right-click the CalendarSynchService row, and select Start Service in menu.

Importing and Exporting Calendar events

You can import and export calendar events to an iCalendar (.ics) file on your hard drive.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Calendar tile.

  2. Tap Settings .

  3. Under Calendar Synch Settings , select File .

  4. Browse to the location on the hard drive where you want to save the file, and tap Done .

    Calendar automatically imports or exports the events to an iCalendar (.ics) file on the hard drive.

Finding the Calendar version

To find the TouchSmart calendar version, tap Settings , and then tap About .

HP TouchSmart Canvas

TouchSmart Canvas is a virtual interactive collage. Use Canvas to create collages of photographs that you can share, use as a desktop background, or print.

Creating a collage

Use the following steps to create a collage:

  1. Open Canvas to full screen mode.

  2. Tap one of the picture folders.

  3. Tap the fly-out menu that comes up, and drag the picture you want onto the canvas to add it to the collage. Repeat using other folders if desired.

  4. Use a two-finger touch to rotate the pictures or resize them.

  5. When done, tap Save Collage to Pictures Library. Your collage is saved as a .jpg file in the Pictures Library.

Removing photos from the collage

To remove one or more pictures:

  1. With Canvas open, select the picture you want to remove.

  2. Tap Remove Selected .

  3. Tap OK to clear the selected pictures from the Canvas.

To remove all pictures on the screen:

  1. With Canvas open, make sure that no pictures are selected.

  2. Tap Remove All .

  3. Tap OK to clear all pictures from the Canvas.

Tagging a photo

To tag a photo:

  1. Open Canvas and tap Tag Pictures .

  2. Enter the name of a tag and tap Add . The new tag displays in the tag bar.

  3. Select a photo you want to tag.

  4. Tap the tag to associate it with the photo. The tag moves to the image.

  5. Tap Tag Pictures again to close the tag bar.

  6. View tagged pictures by tapping Tagged Pictures .

Tagging more than one photo at a time

To tag more than one photo:

  1. Open Canvas and tap Tag Pictures .

  2. Tap a free area on the canvas, and draw a circle around several photos.

  3. Use the tag feature to tag the photos.

Using a collage as your computer desktop background

To use your collage as your computer desktop background:

  1. Tap Start , and then tap Control Panel .

  2. Select Appearance and Personalization , and then select Change desktop background .

  3. In the Picture location menu, select Pictures Library .

  4. Scroll to the My Pictures folder to view your collages.

  5. Select a collage and tap Save changes .

Using voice commands

Use the following steps to use Voice Commands in Canvas.

  1. Open Canvas to full screen mode and tap Voice Commands .

  2. The voice commands fly-out menu opens.

  3. If you have not already done so, select Tap here to improve voice recognition , and go through the voice recognition steps.

  4. When the voice recognition steps are completed, select a picture and speak a command.

  5. To exit voice command, tap the Voice Commands icon again.

Printing a Collage

Use the following steps to print a collage.

  1. Open Canvas to full screen mode. Tap the Pictures folder, and then tap the collage you want to print. Drag it to the Canvas area.

  2. Tap the collage to select it.

  3. Tap the Print Collage button.

  4. Select your print settings: printer, paper size, print quality, paper source, paper type, and number of copies. If more than one picture is selected, you can scroll through the selected pictures by clicking the left and right arrows.

    When done with the settings, tap Print .

HP TouchSmart Clock

Using TouchSmart Clock, you can view up to three clocks on the computer.

The Clock displays.

By default, the Clock shows in a small tile in the bottom row on the TouchSmart homepage. To display it as a large tile, drag the small tile to the top row.

Displaying the time for three cities

Use the following steps to display the time for three different cities:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Clock tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on the Clock tile to edit the time. The Clock settings window displays.

  3. Tap in the Name box, and type in a name for the clock.

  4. In the Time Zone list, tap the arrow to select your time zone. Select the Time Display format, either 12 hour or 24 hour . When you are finished, tap Save .

  5. To add another clock, tap in the empty box on the right or the left of the main clock.

  6. Place a check in the Show left clock or Show right clock check box. Type the name of the clock, and then select the time zone in the list.

  8. Tap the House icon to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Adjusting the time on a clock

Use the following steps to adjust the time:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Clock tile.

  2. Tap the Clock in the center of the window to edit the time.

  3. Make adjustments and tap Save .

Use these steps the first time to set up HP TouchSmart to play a DVD/BD automatically.

  1. Insert a DVD or BD disc.

    The AutoPlay screen displays.

  2. In the Autoplay dialog box, tap Always do this for DVD movies , and then tap Play DVD Video using HP TouchSmart DVD .

Finding your DVD version

To find the TouchSmart DVD version, tap Settings , and then tap Update .

With TouchSmart Music, you can use touch to quickly browse your music collection, play CDs, view song titles, view album art, and create playlists.

Opening the HP TouchSmart Music software

With HP TouchSmart Music, you can use touch to quickly browse your music collection in Tile or Fan View by album, artist, genre, song, or playlist. You can play CDs, view song titles, view album art, and create playlists. Browse your albums in Tile View or Fan View by pressing and sliding your finger across the album images, and then tapping an album to select it.

To open the TouchSmart Music software, touch the Music tile in the carousel.

Selecting a music library

You can use TouchSmart Media Library or your iTunes Media Library (downloaded separately) to add songs to your music library. HP TouchSmart can play music from only one music library at a time. The default setting is TouchSmart Media Library.

To select a music library, open the TouchSmart Music window, tap Settings , select Use my iTunes Media Library , and then tap Save .

Playing music CDs

To listen to your music CDs in HP TouchSmart Music:

  1. Insert your CD into the CD drive by pushing the disc directly into the slot drive, with the label facing the front of the computer.

  2. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile. Your CD displays at the top of the Music window, as Audio CD.

  3. Select Audio CD at the top of the window.

  4. Tap a song to play it. Use the media controls located at the lower right corner to Play, Pause, Next, Previous, Rewind, and Fast Forward. The name of the song playing displays in the media controls window.

    To use the Media controls:
    Button
    What it does
    Tap the Volume icon and drag the slider to adjust the volume.
    Tap the Previous icon to go back to the previous track.
    Press the Previous icon and hold for a couple of seconds to rewind.
    Tap the Stop icon to stop the music.
    Tap the Play/Pause icon to start playing or pause the current song track.
    Tap the Next icon to skip to the next music track.
    Press the Next icon and hold for a couple of seconds to fast forward.
    Tap the Repeat button to play the music again. The music repeats until you press the Stop button.
    Tap the Shuffle button to play the selected music in random order.

Importing music into the Music Library

You can import music into the TouchSmart Media Library by ripping music files from audio CDs, or by importing music from networked Windows computers that have enabled sharing.

Use the following steps to import music from an audio CD.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Insert an audio CD. Your CD displays at the top of the Music window as Audio CD.

  3. Select Audio CD at the top of the window.

  4. To import all the tracks on the CD, tap Import CD into Music Library in the panel on the right.

  5. Tap Add all Songs to import all the tracks on the CD.

    To select individual tracks to import, drag the track to the import list or tap the + (plus sign) next to a song to add it to the list. Repeat until the list is complete.

    To delete a song from the import list, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  6. Tap Import to begin importing music.

  7. After you import the music, clear the import window by tapping Clear All .

    The imported album displays along with the rest of your music.

Working with playlists

Use the instructions in the following sections to create, play, edit, and delete playlists.

Creating a playlist of your favorite songs

You can create a playlist by dragging your songs to the Playlist window.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Select Album , and then select an album to add songs to your playlist.

  3. You can drag an entire album into the playlist on the right or tap the album to open it and drag individual songs into the playlist.

  4. To quickly add several selections, tap Add to List . Green circles with a + (plus sign) display next to each song in song list view, and next to each album in album tile view.

  5. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a song to add it to the playlist. Repeat until the playlist is complete.

  6. To rearrange songs in the playlist, drag the song out of the list and drop it into a different position in the playlist.

  7. To delete a song from the playlist, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  8. Tap Save as Playlist , type the name of the playlist, and then tap Save .

  9. After you create a playlist and save it, clear the Playlist window by tapping Clear All .

    NOTE: You can add up to 500 songs per playlist.

Playing your playlist

To play your playlist:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Select Playlist at the top of the window.

  3. Select your new playlist.

  4. Tap the Play button at the upper right of the window.

Editing a playlist

To edit a playlist:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Select Playlist at the top of the window.

  3. Select a playlist.

  4. Tap the Edit button to open the playlist panel.

  5. Rearrange, add, or delete tracks, and then tap Save .

Deleting a playlist

To delete a playlist:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Select Playlist at the top of the window.

  3. Select a playlist.

  4. Tap the Delete button, and then tap Yes .

Creating a music CD

Use the following steps to create a music CD.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Tap Create CD .

  3. Tap the + (plus sign) next to an album, track, or playlist to add it to the Create CD list. Repeat until the list is complete.

  4. To rearrange tracks in the list, drag the track out of the list, and drop it into a different position in the list.

    To delete a track from the list, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  5. Insert a blank CD or DVD.

  6. Type a name for the disc, and then tap Burn . A creating CD message displays at the top of the screen. When the CD is done burning, tap the X to close the message.

  7. To close the panel without burning a disc, tap Close .

Using Rhapsody Music Service

Rhapsody is a subscription-based, membership-based digital music service. Rhapsody subscribers have unlimited access to a large catalog of major label and independent music. For a fee, you can listen to full length tracks whenever and wherever you want. To help you decide if you would like to use Rhapsody, Rhapsody allows you to try it's service without a fee for a limited time.

NOTE: Rhapsody might not be available in all countries/regions.
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Music tile.

  2. Select Rhapsody at the top of the window.

  3. Sign in on the panel on the right, or sign up if you are not already a Rhapsody subscriber.

  4. Listen to music you select, or tune into Rhapsody channels. You can also buy music to download.

  5. Tap Sign Out to complete your session.

HP TouchSmart Notes

With TouchSmart Notes, you can create text and voice notes by using touch, mouse, keyboard, video, or by recording a voice note. You can also create to-do lists, and print your notes and lists.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Use two fingers to expand a note.

Creating a handwritten or typed note

Written notes can be typed, handwritten by touch, or drawn with a mouse. Complete the following steps to create a handwritten or typed note:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select the Notepad icon at the bottom of the window.

  3. Select a paper color by selecting the Paper icon on the left, and then select a font color by selecting one of the pen colors on the right.

  4. Select a tool to enter your text and graphics:

    • Tap the Pen icon to use your finger.

    • Tap the ABC icon to use your keyboard, and then press the drop-down arrow to select a font.

    • Tap the Eraser tool to erase a handwritten message and start over.

  5. Enter your text by using the tool you selected. You can use more than one tool to create each note. For example, you can type a message and then draw something on the same note.

  6. When you are finished, tap Done . Your note displays on the Notes bulletin board.

Adding or changing the background for a note

You can add a background to a new note or change the background on an existing note.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select the Notepad icon at the bottom of the window.

  3. Tap Background .

  4. Select a new background image from the Pictures folder.

    The new image also displays as a selection in the background list on the left.

  6. Add more images to the Pictures folder to make them available as background images.

Changing the background for an existing note

Complete the following steps:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select a note or to-do list.

  3. Tap one of the backgrounds on the left or tap Background and choose a background from the Pictures folder.

Creating a to-do list

Complete the following steps to create a to-do list:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select the To-Do List icon at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Select a tool to enter your text and graphics:

    • Select the ABC icon to use your keyboard, and then press the drop-down arrow to select a font.

  2. Select the Camera icon at the bottom of the screen, and then select HP Webcam . Select a three-second delay if desired.

Creating a voice note

Complete the following steps to create a voice note:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select the Microphone icon at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Tap the Select Audio File button to use an existing file; or tap the Record button to record a short message.

  4. Tap the Stop button to stop recording your message.

  5. Tap the Play button to review your message.

  6. Tap Cancel to leave the voice note, or tap Done to continue.

  7. Use the Note tools to add a message to the bottom of your voice note, and then click Done to save it to your Note bulletin board. The Speaker icon indicates that a voice message is attached to the note.

  8. To play the voice note, tap it, and then tap the Play button.

  9. Select Done to return to the Note bulletin board, or select Edit to edit the text in the note.

To adjust volume for voice notes in HP TouchSmart Notes, adjust the volume controls on the right side of the HP TouchSmart computer, or on the keyboard. Additionally, to adjust the volume for the HP TouchSmart Notes program, press and hold (or with the mouse, right-click) the Speaker icon in the Windows taskbar. Select Open Volume Mixer , and adjust the HP TouchSmart Notes volume slider.

To view the Speaker icon in the Windows taskbar, minimize HP TouchSmart and go to the Windows desktop by tapping the HP TouchSmart House icon on the upper left corner to get back to the HP TouchSmart homepage, and then tapping the Minimize icon on the upper right corner.

Deleting notes

Complete the following steps to delete a note:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Press and drag the note you want to delete into the Trash icon in the lower-right corner of the window.

  3. Tap the Trash icon to open the trash, tap to select the items you want to delete, and then tap the Delete Selected button.

  4. Tap Done .

E-mailing a note

You must have a Google mail account to e-mail notes. Use Notes Settings to register your account and setup the Notes e-mail feature.

To set up the Notes e-mail feature:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Tap Settings .

  3. Enter your Google mail account settings and password. (If you do not have a Google mail account, set up one first .)

  4. Tap Test e-mail login .

    • If successful, in the Authentication Succeeded box, tap OK .

    • If unsuccessful, tap OK to verify that the e-mail options are correct and reenter the account information.

  5. Tap Done .

To set up a Google mail account:

  1. Go to the Google Create an Account Web site Non-HP site .

  2. Register for a new e-mail account.

  3. Use the new Google e-mail account information in the Notes Settings.

E-mailing a note with Google mail

To e-mail a note, use the following steps:

NOTE: You must have a Google mail account to e-mail notes. Use Notes Settings to register your account and setup the Notes e-mail feature.
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Notes tile.

  2. Select a note from the Notes bulletin board.

  3. Tap E-mail to , type in an e-mail address, tap Add , and tap Done .

  4. Tap Done to save the change.

  5. Tap Yes in the Note Updated box.

    Your note is e-mailed to the recipient.

To find the version of the HP TouchSmart Notes software that you are using, tap Settings , and then tap the About button.

HP TouchSmart Photo

View, edit, and print your photos or upload them to Snapfish. Create and view slideshows, and then burn them to CD or DVD. When you edit a photo, you can crop, rotate, auto correct, and fix red-eye. HP TouchSmart Photo supports the .jpg file format.

Viewing a photo collection

View all your photos from anywhere on the hard disk drive, a removable drive, or a memory card. HP TouchSmart Photo scans your hard disk drive and all available drives to find photos that you can view in the HP TouchSmart Photo window.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Browse to the group of pictures you want to view:

    • Tap Dates . Select the date of your picture. If necessary, use the scroll bar on the right to view all the photos.

    • Tap Folders . Select a folder, and then select the photos you want to view. When you select a folder, the other names of folders display at the top of the screen.

    • Tap Ratings . Scroll to a photo you want to view.

    • Tap All Photos . Scroll to a photo you want to view.

    • Tap Slideshows . Scroll to a slideshow you want to view.

    • Tap the removable or networked drive, and scroll to view photos.

  3. Use the scroll bar to find your pictures. They are listed by the date they were added to your hard disk drive.

  4. You can view your photos in fan view, tile view, or two-touch folder preview.

    • When you browse your photos by Dates, Folders, or Ratings, they display in tile view, showing a sample of the photos in that category.

    • Two-touch folder preview . Press and drag in the row using two fingers to expand folders to a nine-square preview. Then use two-touch to collapse the folder.

    • Touch the Fan button at the bottom of the window to view your photos in fan view. Touch the Fan button again to return to tile view.

Adding photos to your photo library

When you connect an external device such as a digital camera, Windows detects your external device and displays a message asking if you want to view, copy, or transfer your images to the computer.

You have several ways to add photos to your photo library on the computer. You can:

  • Use the memory card reader on the side of the computer to transfer photos from your digital camera to the computer. HP TouchSmart can also display photos from the memory card reader.

  • Download photos from the Web to your hard disk drive.

  • Insert a CD or removable storage drive, and then move photos to the Windows Explorer Picture folder or any other folder on your hard disk drive.

  • Connect a digital camera or digital video camera to the HP TouchSmart computer by using the transfer cable that came with the device.

  • Import photos from networked Windows computers that have enabled sharing.

Editing your photos

You can make changes to your photos in HP TouchSmart Photo. Some of the editing features include removing red-eye, cropping, autocorrecting, and rotating images. When you edit a photo, you always have the option to revert to the original image at a later time.

To crop a photo:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on a photo to open it. When you open a photo, the photo editing window opens.

  5. Tap the Editing tool you want to use and follow the instructions.

  6. Tap Return to exit the Editing window.

  7. You can select the Revert to Original button later if you want to return to your original photo.

Printing your photos

Use the following steps to print your photos:

  1. Connect your printer, and install any necessary printer software.

  2. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  3. Select the photo you want to print by tapping it.

  4. Tap Print Photos . If the Print button is dimmed, connect your printer and set it up to work with the computer.

  5. Select your print options, and then tap Print .

  6. Follow any on-screen printing instructions.

Rating your photos

You can rate your photos, and then search for a photo by its rating.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on a photo to open it. When you open a photo, the Photo Details window opens.

  3. In the Photo Details panel, tap the desired star rating.

  4. When done, tap Return .

Tagging your photos with keywords

You can assign keywords to your photos to help you find them.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on a photo to open it. When you open a photo, the photo editing window opens.

  3. Tap Tag this Photo to open the tagging window.

  4. Type a keyword in the Create a Tag box, and then tap Add . You can also delete a tag or clear all the tags.

  5. When done, tap Save .

Searching for a photo by keyword

Use the keywords you assign to help you search for a photo.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap the Search button.

    The Search window displays.

  3. In the Search for area, tap how you want to search: Names , Tags , or Keyword . Then write on the screen or type the item you want to search for. The results display in the pane on the right. Tap an item in the results to open that photo or tap Close to return to the previous screen.

Viewing a photo slideshow

These steps describe how to view a slideshow of the photos on your computer. To view a slideshow that you have created and saved, skip to the next section .

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap the Play Slideshow button in the lower left of the Photo window.

  3. Adjust the slideshow settings by tapping the Settings button, selecting your settings, and then tapping Save .

    HP TouchSmart Photo Settings include:

    • Slideshow Transition: Fade (default), Motion, Cell, Cube, None

    • Slideshow Timing: increase or decrease the timing. The default is five seconds per picture.

    • Select Folders: select picture folders.

Creating and saving a slideshow

Use the following steps to create a slideshow of your photos:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap the Create Slideshow button at screen bottom to display the slideshow panel on the right.

  3. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a photo to add it to the slideshow. Repeat until the slideshow is complete.

  4. To rearrange photos in the slideshow, drag the photo out of the list, and drop it into a different position in the slideshow.

    To delete a photo from the slideshow, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  5. To add music, tap the Select music button to browse music tracks from your collection.

  6. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a song to select it. Repeat until the music is complete. Then tap Save to add it to the slideshow.

  7. To save the slideshow, type the name of the slideshow, and then tap Save .

Viewing a saved slideshow

Use the following steps to view the slideshow you create:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap Slideshows .

  3. Select a slideshow and tap the Play Slideshow button in the lower left.

  4. Adjust the slideshow by tapping the controls on the screen.

Editing a slideshow

Use the following steps to edit your slideshow:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Select Slideshows at the top of the window.

  3. Select a slideshow.

  4. Tap the Edit button to open the slideshow panel.

  5. Rearrange, add, or delete photos, and then tap Save .

Uploading photos to Snapfish

Use the following steps to uploading your photos to Snapfish:

NOTE: The Snapfish Web site is not available in some countries/regions.
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap the Upload Photos button at the bottom of the window.

  3. Tap the green circle with the + (plus sign) next to the photo you want to upload. The photo moves to the list on the right side of the window. Repeat this step until all the photos you want to upload are selected.

  4. If you have a Snapfish account, type your e-mail address (Name) and password, and then tap Login .

    If you do not have a Snapfish account, tap Sign up for an account . HP TouchSmart minimizes and the Snapfish Web site opens (http://www.snapfish.com). Follow the on-screen instructions to create your account, and then open HP TouchSmart. Type your e-mail address (Name) and password of your Snapfish account, and then tap Login .

  5. Select an album for your photos or create a new album, and then tap the Upload button. HP TouchSmart displays a message when your photos are uploaded.

  6. Go to the Snapfish Web site and view your photos.

Creating a CD or DVD of photos or slideshows

Use the following steps to create and burn a CD or DVD of photos or slideshows:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Photo tile.

  2. Tap Create CD .

  3. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a photo or slideshow to add it to the Create CD list. Repeat until the list is complete.

  4. To rearrange photos and slideshows in the list, drag the photo or slideshow out of the list, and drop it into a different position in the list.

    To delete a photo or slideshow from the list, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  5. Insert a blank CD or DVD.

  6. Type a name for the disc, and then tap Burn .

  7. To close the panel without burning a disc, tap Close .

HP TouchSmart Recipe Box

TouchSmart Recipe Box organizes your recipes in one place. You can add and edit recipes, organize them by category, and browse for a recipe on the Internet. Use the interactive voice command feature to listen to your recipes while you cook - without touching the screen.

Opening HP TouchSmart Recipe Box

To open Recipe Box, tap the Recipe Box tile in the carousel.

Viewing a recipe

You can view recipes by category, or by individual recipe.

Use the following steps to view a recipe:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Select a category to view recipes.

  3. Select a recipe from the list to open the recipe details.

  4. Tap the back arrow to return to the main screen.

Use the following steps to add a recipe:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Tap Add New Recipe .

  3. Enter the recipe details and assign a category in the Add New Recipe screen.

  4. Tap Done to add the recipe.

Editing a recipe

Use the following steps to edit a recipe:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Select a recipe.

  3. Tap Edit Recipe .

  4. Change the desired recipe details or category in the Edit Recipe screen.

  5. Tap Done to save the edits.

Deleting a recipe

Use the following steps to delete a recipe:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Select a recipe from the list.

  3. Tap the trash can icon next to the recipe.

  4. Tap Yes to confirm recipe deletion.

Adding a category

Use the following steps to add a category:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Tap Manage Categories .

  3. Tap Add New .

  4. Enter a name for the new category and tap Add .

  5. Tap the Close button to close the Manage Categories screen.

Browsing for a recipe on the Internet

To browse for a recipe on the Internet, complete the following steps:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile. Open Recipe Box to full screen mode.

  2. Tap Browse for a Recipe .

    The recipe Web site displays in the browser window.

  3. Tap a time on the Dinner Countdown screen, and then tap Search .

  4. Select a recipe in the results.

  5. You can also tap Favorite Recipe Sites to browse for a recipe.

Extracting a recipe

To extract a recipe from the Internet, complete the following steps:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile. Open to full screen mode.

  2. Type a URL in the browser command line and tap the Arrow Go button. Find the recipe you want to extract.

    The recipe Web site displays in the browser window.

  3. With the desired recipe page open in the browser, tap Extract Recipe .

  4. The Add New Recipe box opens with the imported recipe information.

  5. Edit recipe details as needed:

    • Confirm recipe name

    • Select a category

    • Confirm cooking instructions

    • Assign prep time, cook time, and serving size

  6. Tap Done to add the recipe. The recipe now appears in the selected category.

Enabling voice commands

To use voice commands:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Open any recipe.

  3. Tap the Enable Speech Commands box.

  4. If you have not already done so, select Click here to learn how to improve speech recognition accuracy .

  5. Select Train the speech recognition engine and complete the steps .

  6. With speech recognition completed, you are now ready to use voice commands to listen to a recipe.

Listening to a recipe

To listen to a recipe:

  1. Open any recipe.

  2. Tap the Enable Speech Commands box.

  3. Speak any command to use the recipe.

    • Beginning : Start reading the first ingredient and then pause.

    • Move : Continue reading the next line. If Beginning was used before this command, the reading pauses after reading the line. If Again was used, the recipe is read in order.

    • Back : Repeat the last line. This works only if the previous command was Beginning .

    • Again : Begin reading the entire recipe from the first ingredient and continue reading in order.

    • Continue : Pause reading the entire recipe.

Listening with a Bluetooth headset

Enable voice commands (see steps above) before trying to connect with a Bluetooth headset.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Recipe Box tile.

  2. Open any recipe.

  3. Tap Settings and tap Add Headset .

  4. Follow the instructions to setup a Bluetooth headset.

  5. When completed, you can use the headset to give voice commands for a recipe.

  6. To exit, turn off the headset or uncheck the box labeled Enable speech commands .

HP TouchSmart Video

With HP TouchSmart Video, you can capture your videos with the built-in webcam, play them back, burn them to DVD, create movies, and then upload them to YouTube or Facebook, or transfer them to your iPod or PSP.

NOTE: The YouTube Web site is not available in some countries/regions.

Your can display your videos by date, folder, or rating, or you can view all your videos. Scroll left or right to find the video you want.

HP TouchSmart Video supports the following video file formats:

.ASF
.MPG
.AVI
.MPEG
DVR-MS
.WMV

Viewing a video collection

View all your videos from anywhere on the hard disk drive, a removable drive, or a memory card. HP TouchSmart Video scans your hard disk drive and all available drives to find videos that you can view in the HP TouchSmart Video window.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Browse to the group of videos you want to view:

    • Tap Dates . Select the date of your video. If necessary, use the scroll bar on the right to view all the videos.

    • Tap Folders . Select a folder, and then select the videos you want to view. When you select a folder, the other names of folders display at the top of the screen.

    • Tap Ratings . Scroll to a video you want to view.

    • Tap All videos . Scroll to a video you want to view.

    • Tap Playlists . Scroll to a playlist you want to view.

    • Tap the removable or networked drive, and scroll to view videos.

  3. Use the scroll bar to find your videos. They are listed by the date they were added to your hard disk drive.

  4. You can view your videos in fan view, tile view, or two-touch folder preview.

    • When you browse your videos by Dates, Folders, Ratings, or All Videos, they display in tile view.

    • Touch the Fan button at the bottom of the window to view your videos in fan view. Touch the button again to return to tile view.

    • Two-touch preview . Press and drag in the row using two fingers to expand folders to a nine-square preview. Then use two-touch to collapse the folder.

Adding your videos to the computer

Use one of the following methods to add videos to the computer. When you have added your videos to the computer, you can play them in HP TouchSmart.

  • Capture videos with the built-in webcam.

  • Connect your video camera to the computer by using a USB or FireWire (IEEE 1394) connector, and follow the on-screen instructions to transfer videos to your Videos folder.

  • Download videos from the Internet to your Videos folder.

  • Import videos from networked Windows computers that have enabled sharing.

Watching your videos

Use the following steps to watch your videos:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Dates , Folders , Ratings , All Videos , or Removable Disk (if available) to find your video.

  3. Tap the video to begin playing it in HP TouchSmart.

  4. Tap Play Fullscreen to play it in full-screen mode.

    Tap the screen to display the video controls.

    Tap the Close button in the upper-right corner to close the video and return to the Videos window.

Use the following methods to adjust the video volume.

  • Use the volume controls in the Video tile.

  • Adjust the volume controls on the right side of the HP TouchSmart computer, or on the keyboard.

  • View both volume controls in the Volume Mixer. Press and hold the Speaker icon in the Windows taskbar (or right-click with the mouse).

    Click Open Volume Mixer , and adjust both the Speaker volume and the HP TouchSmart Video volume. You might need to scroll to the right in the Applications area to see HP TouchSmart Video.

    To view the Speaker icon in the Windows taskbar, minimize HP TouchSmart and return to the Windows desktop.

Deleting a video

Use the following steps to delete a video:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Dates , Folders , or All Videos .

  3. Tap the video you want to delete.

  4. Tap Delete .

  5. In the delete confirmation dialog box, tap Yes .

Renaming a video

Use the following steps to rename a video:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Dates , Folders , or All Videos .

  3. Tap the video you want to rename.

  4. Tap Rename .

  5. Type in a new name, and then tap Save .

Editing a video

Use the following steps to edit a video:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Dates , Folders , or All Videos .

  3. Tap the video you want to edit.

  4. Tap Edit .

  5. In the video editing screen you can set the beginning and ending points, rotate the video, auto fix the lighting, fix shaky videos, reduce video noise, and preview your changes.

    When done making changes, tap Apply .

Tagging and rating your videos

You can tag your videos with keywords and assign a star rating to them. Then you can search for your videos by keyword and star rating.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on a video to open it. When you open a video, the video editing window opens.

  3. Tap Tag this Video to open the tagging window.

  4. Type a keyword in the Create a Tag box, and then tap Add . You can also delete a tab or clear all the delete tags.

  5. When done, tap Save .

Rating your videos

You can assign star ratings to your videos, and then search by Ratings.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Tap anywhere on a video to open it.

  3. In the Video Details panel, tap the desired Star rating.

  4. When done, tap Return .

Searching for a video

Use the keywords you assign to help you search for a video.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Tap the Search button.

    The Search window displays.

Working with playlists

Use the following sections to create playlists of your videos, and then play them.

Creating a video playlist

Use the following steps to create a video playlist:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Dates , Folders , or All Videos .

  3. Tap the Create Playlists button at screen bottom to display playlist panel on right.

  4. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a video to add it to the playlist. Repeat until the playlist is complete.

  5. To rearrange videos in the playlist, drag the video out of the list, and drop it into a different position in the playlist.

    To delete a video from the playlist, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  6. Type the name of the playlist, and then tap Save .

  7. After you create a playlist and save it, clear the playlist window by tapping Clear All .

Use the following steps to play a video playlist:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Select Playlist at the top of the window.

  3. Select a playlist , and tap the first video in the list.

  4. Tap the Play Fullscreen button to play all videos in the playlist sequentially.

    NOTE: Unless you tap Play Fullscreen , only the first video in the playlist plays.

Making a movie

Use the following steps to make a movie:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Tap Make Movie .

  3. Select Dates , Folders , Ratings , All Videos , or Playlists to view your videos and playlists.

  4. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a video or playlist to add it to the Select Videos list.

  5. To rearrange videos in the list, drag the video out of the list, and drop it into a different position in the list.

  6. To delete a video from the list, touch and drag it to the Trash icon.

  7. When done selecting videos, tap Next .

  8. In Edit Videos mode, select the editing tools from the top of the screen.

    Select Style to create a movie automatically.

  9. Use Trim to adjust the length of a video clip.

  10. Tap Fix to rotate the video, fix lighting, or fix shaky videos.

Burning videos and playlists to DVD

Use the following steps to burn videos and playlists to DVD:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and select the Video tile.

  2. Tap Create CD .

  3. Select Dates , Folders , Ratings , All Videos , or Playlists to view your videos or playlists.

  4. Tap the + (plus sign) next to a video or playlist to add it to the Create CD/DVD list. Repeat until the list is complete.

HP TouchSmart Weather

HP TouchSmart has a link to a two-day weather forecast (select models only).

NOTE: The Weather feature is not available in all countries/regions. Weather is offered only in English.

Setting up TouchSmart Weather

Complete the following steps to set TouchSmart Weather to display the temperature and forecast for your city.

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Weather tile in the carousel.

  2. To change the location, tap the Settings button.

  3. Tap in the Set Location box, and then use your keyboard or the on-screen keyboard to enter a city, state, ZIP code, or postal code.

  4. Tap the Search button. Your city displays in the Select Your City box.

  5. Select Fahrenheit or Celsius .

  6. Tap OK to confirm the settings.

  7. Tap the House icon to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Finding your Weather version

To find the TouchSmart Weather version, tap Settings .

The version displays in the lower-left corner of the Settings screen.

HP TouchSmart Webcam

Your HP TouchSmart computer comes with a built-in webcam and array microphones. You can use them to capture videos and have video chats and conference calls by using instant messaging software. You must download the instant messaging software of your choice; it is not included with HP TouchSmart.

The webcam and the microphones are located at the top center of the TouchSmart computer. You can adjust the webcam by using the adjustment lever on the back of the computer.

The optimal distance for recording sound with the array microphone is about two feet (one-half meter) away from the HP TouchSmart PC.

Creating videos with the webcam

Complete the following steps to create a video with the webcam:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.

  2. Tap the Capture button on the HP TouchSmart Webcam window. HP TouchSmart Webcam begins to capture the current webcam video.

  3. Add emotion and apply special effects to your webcam video such as frames, emotions, filters, and distortion.

    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .

  4. Tap the Stop button to stop capturing your video.

    Your video is displayed in the All Captured Content area.

  5. To review your video, tap it in the captured content area, and tap Play .

  6. Tap Close to keep the video, or Delete to discard it.

    NOTE: Your video is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Taking a photo snapshot

Complete the following steps to take a photo snapshot:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.

  2. Add emotion and apply special effects for your photo such as frames and filters.

    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .

  3. Tap the Snapshot button. The picture displays in the All Captured Content area.

  4. Your photo displays in the All Captured Content area.

  5. To view your photo, tap it in the captured content area.

  6. Tap Close to keep the photo, or Delete to discard it.

    NOTE: Your photo is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Taking a series of photos in quick succession

Complete the following steps to use the Burst feature to take a series of photos in quick succession:

  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.

  2. Add emotion and apply special effects for your photo such as frames and filters.

    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .

  3. Tap the Burst button in the HP TouchSmart Webcam window.

    HP TouchSmart Webcam takes several pictures in quick succession and your photos appear in the All Captured Content area.

    NOTE: The number of pictures taken with the Burst feature depends on the number specified in Snapshot Settings.
  4. To view a photo, tap it in the captured content area.

  5. Tap Close to keep the photo, or Delete to discard it.

    NOTE: Your photo is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Using HP TouchSmart Webcam with instant messaging software

You can use HP TouchSmart Webcam with an instant messaging program, but you must first enable your software to work with HP TouchSmart Webcam. (Check your messaging program's instructions for steps.)

This example is for Windows Live Messenger.

  1. In the Windows Live Messenger main window, select Tools , and then select Audio and Video Setup .

  2. In Step 3 of the Audio and Video Setup wizard, select HP Web Camera Filter .

  3. Tap the Finish button to save your changes and enable HP TouchSmart Webcam.

Having a video chat or making conference calls

To set up a video chat, you must have a connection to the Internet, an ISP, and software that enables you to make video calls over the Internet. As with chat or instant messenger software, you can use this kind of software to chat with one or more people at a time. This software might require a separate subscription, and is not included with HP TouchSmart.

Before you can set up a video chat, you must do the following:

  1. Download an Internet messenger or video phone call program. Make sure the person you are calling has compatible video calling software.

  2. Enable your webcam as the default video input. This is usually done through the video setup in the software program Tools menu.

  3. Send your video call by following the instructions for the video calling software program.

To start a video chat in HP TouchSmart Webcam:

  1. Tap Start .

  2. Open the Internet messenger or video phone software program.

  3. Start a video call.

    For example, in Windows Live Messenger, click Action , Video , and then click Start a Video Call .

  4. Select an online contact and click OK .

  5. HP TouchSmart Webcam opens. When your online contact answers, begin your Video Call.

  6. To close the call, click Hang Up in the Internet messenger or video phone call program. Then close HP TouchSmart WebCam.

Using an avatar on your live webcam video

Avatars are character effects that use facial feature tracking to mimic your facial movements and actions. Use an avatar for a video chat session if you are camera shy, or if you want to record a video with different characters.

To use an avatar, use the following steps:

  1. Position your face in the center of the webcam preview window, and about 30 - 45 cm (12 to 18 in) away from the webcam.

    NOTE: A well-lit environment is required for the avatar effect to work correctly.
  2. Tap the Avatar tab.

  3. Select the desired avatar to turn it on.

  4. Hold your head still for about 5 seconds so the software can correctly calibrate and recognize your facial features.

  5. After the software has recognized your facial features, the avatar mimics many of your motions, such as eye blinks, winks, and head nods.

Enabling the on-hold picture

The on-hold picture feature allows you to substitute a static picture for a live webcam image when you are conducting a video call through an instant messenger or live video phone call program.

  1. Open the Internet messenger or video phone call program, and start a video call.

    HP TouchSmart Webcam opens.

  2. Tap the On hold button located at the far right of the effects button row, and select a picture to apply.

  3. To stop the on-hold picture and return to live webcam, show your Webcam in the Internet messenger or video phone call program.

Adjusting the microphone volume

To adjust the microphone volume, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the Volume icon on the taskbar, and click Recording Devices .

  2. In Recording Devices, click Microphone , and then click Properties .

  3. In the Microphone Properties, click the Levels tab and move the slider to adjust the volume for the microphone.

Adjusting the webcam settings

Complete the following steps to adjust the webcam settings:

Tap Settings .

In the Capture settings, you can select the capture quality, choose whether to capture audio, and choose to use a 3-second delay before the webcam begins capturing video.

In the Snapshot settings, you can set the number of snapshots the camera takes for the Burst feature, and adjust the shutter speed.

Using face tracking

The face tracking feature helps keep facial images centered and proportioned on the screen. To enable face tracking, tap Zoom , select Face tracking , and tap OK .

NOTE: It has been reported that lighting conditions can affect the performance of the face tracking feature. To improve performance of the face tracking feature try to increase the light to the face while decreasing the amount of light in the background. If the lighting conditions cannot be adjusted, select Disable zoom or Manual zoom instead.
