Title:

HP ProCurve Switch 4000M -- Reset to Factory Default Settings

Available Part Numbers:

J4121A HP ProCurve Switch 4000M

Issue Description:

I have a switch J4121A ProCurve Switch 4000M. I need to reset to the default option. I also need the password and the IP address for default assigning.

Solution:

The ProCurve Switch 4000m does not feature a default username or password when reset to factory default settings. In addition, the switch defaults to DHCP/BootP when reset. It does not have a default IP address.

Reset the switch to factory settings by approaching it physically with two small, pointed implements such as straightened paperclips. Simultaneously depress the small, recessed buttons labeled, “Reset” and “Clear.”

Release the Reset button, holding Clear only until the Self Test LED begins to blink. Release the Clear button. The switch will reboot with factory default settings.

You will then be able to access the switch in one of two ways:

  1. If a DHCP server is present on your local subnet, the switch should lease an IP address from the server. Look in the DHCP server's pools to see which IP was provisioned for the switch.
  2. Connect a serial console session with the switch, using the black console cable that would have shipped in the box of any ProCurve switch. The part number of that cable is 5184-1894. The part number is stamped directly on the connectors.
  3. Use a VT100-compliant terminal emulator such as Hyper Terminal or Tera Term Pro to make the serial connection with the switch. Use the following COM port settings to create a terminal session with the Switch 4000m:
    • Any baud rate from 2400 to 115200 (the switch automatically senses the speed).
    • 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, XON/XOFF flow control.
    • For Windows Terminal program, also disable (uncheck) the “Use Function, Arrow, and Ctrl Keys for Windows” option.
