Integrity Servers/IA64 OpenVMS - How to Create a Conversational Boot Option

Information

It is convenient to have a boot selection available in the main Boot Menu of the EFI Boot Manager for a conversational boot to an IA64 OpenVMS system disk.

This article provides an example of setting this up.

Details

This must be done from a privileged OpenVMS account. Comments are given inside parenthesis. All other text is actual procedure output:


$ @sys$manager:boot_options.com (Command procedure to invoke)


OpenVMS I64 Boot Manager Boot Options List Management Utility

(1) ADD an entry to the Boot Options list
(2) DISPLAY the Boot Options list
(3) REMOVE an entry from the Boot Options list
(4) MOVE the position of an entry in the Boot Options list
(5) VALIDATE boot options and fix them as necessary
(6) Modify Boot Options TIMEOUT setting


(B) Set to operate on the Boot Device Options list
(D) Set to operate on the Dump Device Options list
(G) Set to operate on the Debug Device Options list

(E) EXIT from Boot Manager utility

You can also enter Ctrl-Y at any time to abort this utility.

Enter your choice: 2 (Enter "2" to display what is already set up)

To display all entries in the Boot Options list, press Return.
To display specific entries, enter the entry number or device name.
[Enter "?" for a list of devices]: (Enter "return")


EFI Boot Options list: Timeout = 15 secs.

Enter the desired position number [1,2,3,,,] of the entry.
To display the Boot Options list, enter "?" and press Return.
Position [1]: 3 (Let's put it in position 3 (your choice))

Enter the value for VMS_FLAGS in the form n,n.
VMS_FLAGS [NONE]: 0,1 (Enter the value for "root,boot_flag". The root is the desired OpenVMS root of the system disk to boot to. The boot_flag of 1 selects conversational boot.)

Enter a short description [do not include quotation marks].
Description ["J25U13$DKC0"]: DKC0 Conversational Boot (Enter whatever)

Enter your choice: (Enter "return" to display the main menu)
