HP Compaq Notebook PCs - Notebook Cannot Boot After Deploying Operating System Image

After deploying a custom operating system image created with Norton Ghost from Symantec, the notebook cannot boot into Microsoft Windows and may display one of the following error messages:
  • "Non-System disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready"

  • "A disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

  • "_" Blinking cursor and no error message.

  • Low level driver HPDSKFLT.SYS causing system boot up problem.


This error may be happening because a generic SATA driver was installed on a notebook using the F6 method of SATA driver installation, then a Norton Ghost image was created from that notebook and subsequently deployed with the HDD Translation mode in BIOS set to Bit-Shift.

To resolve the error:

  1. Ensure that the notebook has the latest BIOS installed; for detailed information on installing the latest BIOS, refer to HP PCs - Obtaining Software and Drivers . The latest BIOS should have HDD translation mode set to LBA - assisted.

  2. Integrate the SATA driver by following the steps provided in the Build an image and switch to SATA AHCI Mode section, below.

  3. Change the HDD Translation mode to LBA - assisted on all the units on which you are deploying the image using the following steps:

    1. Start or reboot the notebook PC.

    2. Press F10 when the HP logo displays. The BIOS Setup Utility starts.

    3. Select System Configuration, then Device Configuration.

    4. Ensure that HDD Translation mode is set to LBA - assisted.

    5. Save changes and exit the BIOS Setup Utility.

Build an image and switch to SATA AHCI Mode

With SATA AHCI mode enabled in BIOS, special steps are required to make XP CDx, SYSPREP, RIS, or UNATTENDED installs work properly with WinPE. Generally speaking, you want to disable AHCI mode in the BIOS, build the image, add the drivers for SATA AHCI, and then reboot enable AHCI mode in the BIOS.

For example, the following shows you how to do it on an nx9420:

  1. Set SATA Native Mode to Disable, and then install the operating system as you normally would.

  2. Get the latest SoftPaq that creates a disk with the SATA AHCI drivers. For example, sp32478 for Intel SATA AHCI Ctrller Drvr . REV_ A.

  3. Use TotalCommander (shareware from Non-HP site ) to first extract the F6flpy32.exe file from the SoftPaq, then extract the temp.IMA file from F6flpy32.exe.

    Open the temp.IMA file in a utility such as UltraISO and copy the driver files.

  4. Install the Intel chipset driver. For example, sp32781 for Intel Chipset Inst Utly for ICH7 . REV_ A.

  5. Update the ICH-7 controller that was just added from the chipset driver.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions when presented with the Hardware Update Wizard.

  7. Reboot the computer. Press F10 when the blue HP logo appears to boot into BIOS.

  8. Set SATA Native Mode to Enable, and then reboot once again.

  9. After rebooting, the additional SATA components will be updated and allow you to enter Windows normally. You will be prompted to reboot again.

  10. Finally, the driver is successfully installed, as shown in the Device Manager.

If the issue persists after the update, disable the Data Execution Prevention option in the System Configuration menu in BIOS.

HPDSKFTL.sys is part of the system. Devices such as the HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor may be causing the problem. Once the image is deployed, the option can be enabled in the BIOS.
