HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer Series (N911) - Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Faxes, or Scans

Issue

When you copy, fax, or scan an original, the resulting output contains vertical bands, lines, or streaks in one or more colors.

When you print the original, the output is normal.

Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Make sure the scanner lid is closed before turning ON the printer

Turning the printer on with the scanner lid open might cause poor scan quality, like vertical streaks and lines. Make sure the scanner lid is closed before turning on the printer.

Solution two: Reset the All-in-One

CAUTION: When you perform this step make sure the scanner lid is closed for a proper scan calibration.

If there is static interference, or loose connections with the product, this can result in bands or lines in the copy, fax, or scan output. To resolve this issue, check the product connections and reset the product.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

  8. Try to copy, fax, or scan again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Clean the scanner glass and scanner lid

If the scanner glass or the white underside of the lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the product.

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Several clean, soft, lint-free cloths

  • Mild glass cleaner

CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanner glass. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride. These substances can damage the product. Avoid isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) because it can leave streaks on the glass.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.

  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Lift the scanner lid.

  4. Spray a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with mild glass cleaner.

    CAUTION: To protect the scanner, do not spray the glass cleaner directly on the glass.
  5. Clean the scanner glass, and the glass strip next to the scanner glass, with the lint-free cloth.

  6. Clean the white underside of the scanner lid.

  7. Dry the scanner glass and the glass strip thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth or chamois to prevent spotting, and then dry the white underside of the scanner lid.

    NOTE: Do not use paper-based wipes or tissues that can leave fiber residue.
  8. Close the scanner lid.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  10. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

  11. Try to copy, fax, or scan again.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Clean the automatic document feeder (ADF)

Follow these steps to clean the automatic document feeder (ADF), and then make blank copies to check if the issue is resolved.

Step one: Clean the ADF rollers and separator pad

Follow these steps to clean the automatic document feeder (ADF).

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)

  2. Remove any documents from the document feeder tray.

  3. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  5. Lift the cover of the ADF until it stops.

  6. Locate the pick rollers and the separator pad.

  7. Lightly dampen a clean lint-free cloth with distilled or bottled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  8. Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off of the separator pad.

  10. Dry the rollers and the separator pad with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

  11. Close the ADF cover.

Step two: Make a blank copy using the scanner

Follow these steps to make a blank copy using the scanner.

  1. Lift the scanner lid.

  2. Remove any originals from the scanner glass.

  3. Close the scanner lid.

  4. Load unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  5. From the home screen on the product control panel, touch Copy ( ).

  6. Touch Start Black to start the copy.

    • If the copy is clean, continue to the next step to make a copy using the ADF.

    • If the copy has vertical bands, lines, or streaks, there might be dust inside the product, poor internal connections, or the product might be damaged. Skip to the next solution.

Step three: Make a blank copy using the ADF

Follow these steps to make a blank copy using the ADF.

  1. Load unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. Load a blank, white sheet of paper into the automatic document feeder tray.

  3. Slide the width guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper.

  4. From the home screen on the product control panel, touch Copy ( ).

  5. Touch Start Black to start the copy.

    • If the copy is clean, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the copy has vertical bands, lines, or streaks, there might be dust inside the product, poor internal connections, or the product might be damaged. Continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Service the All-in-One

Service the Product - Contextual Wrapper

There might be a problem with the product hardware or a component may not be functioning correctly. The next step is to service the product.

If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

  • If your product is in warranty , contact HP.

  • If your product is out of warranty , fees might apply for contacting HP.
