HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    CAUTION:
    • Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
    • Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components.
  2. Slide the battery release latch towards the battery icon to disengage the battery from the base enclosure.

  3. Remove the battery by lifting it out of the battery bay.

  4. Slide the accessory cover release latch towards the accessory cover release icon to disengage the accessory cover from the base enclosure.

  5. Lift the accessory cover and remove it.

  6. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with keyboard icons that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.

  7. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.

  8. Using your finger or a flat bladed non-marring tool, gently lift up on the rear edge of the keyboard to disengage the keyboard from the top cover.

  9. Lift the keyboard upright until the keyboard ZIF connector, erasure pointer LIF connector, and keyboard backlight ZIF connector are accessible.

    NOTE: Do not lift the keyboard further away from the notebook than necessary to access the keyboard, erasure pointer, and keyboard backlight connectors.
  10. Remove the erasure pointer ribbon cable from the LIF connector.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the LIF connector and ribbon cable.
  11. Slide the keyboard towards the rear of the notebook to release the tabs at the front of the keyboard.

  12. Turn the keyboard upside down on the top cover.

  13. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the keyboard ZIF connector and remove the keyboard ribbon cable.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  14. Gently lift up on the locking bar of the keyboard backlight ZIF connector and remove the keyboard ribbon cable.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  15. Remove the keyboard.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Replace the keyboard upside down on the top cover so that the keyboard ZIF connector, erasure pointer LIF connector, and keyboard backlight ZIF connector are accessible.

  2. Insert the keyboard backlight ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  4. Turn the keyboard right side up and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover.

  5. Insert the erasure pointer ribbon cable into the LIF connector on the system board.

    NOTE: Use care to prevent damaging the LIF connector and ribbon cable.
  6. Press the keyboard flat until it engages with the top cover.

  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.

  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with keyboard icons that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.

  9. Replace the accessory cover on the base enclosure aligning the accessory cover latches with the openings in the base enclosure.

  10. Slide the accessory cover towards the rear of the notebook until it engages with the base enclosure.

  11. Slide the accessory cover release latch to the left to lock the accessory cover into place.

  12. Lower the rear edge of the battery into the battery bay.

  13. Lower the front edge of the battery until it clicks into place.

  14. Slide the battery release latch to the right to lock the battery into place.
