DESCRIPTION

During the installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 on an HP ProLiant server with an AMD Opteron or 4200-series processor or AMD Opteron 6200-series processor, a kernel panic will occur when attempting to boot after the installation, and a black screen will be displayed.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant server with an AMD Opteron or 4200-series processor or AMD Opteron 6200-series processor and attempting an installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1.

RESOLUTION

This does not occur with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2.

Note: Customers running SLES 11 SP1 xen should update to the kernel errata 2.6.32.46-0.3.1 to avoid the server becoming unresponsive when installing a virtual guest as documented in the Customer Advisory SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 - Xen May Stop Responding When Installing a Virtual Machine on an HP ProLiant Server With an AMD Opteron or 4200-Series Processor or AMD Opteron 6200-Series Processor, located at the following URL:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c03087321

As a workaround, perform either of the following:

  • For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 (AMD64/EM64T), use the "numa=off" kernel parameter to boot the server and update to kernel errata 2.6.32.36-0.5.2 (or later) and then remove the "numa=off" kernel parameter.
  • For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 (x86), use the "acpi=off" kernel parameter to boot the server and update to kernel errata 2.6.32.36-0.5.2 (or later) and then remove the "acpi=off" kernel parameter.

Note: Refer to the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 documentation for additional information on obtaining and updating the kernel.
